"When I write, I feel strong and have a voice", says Itai Mushekwe of Zimbabwe. "In my country, writing means: Hello, I exist and I have a different opinion!" says Iranian Faraj Sarkohisie. Along with hundreds of other authors they fled their homelands and were able to find refuge in Germany, thanks to "Writers in Exile." The German branch of the organization was established ten years ago by the German PEN Center. Last year 200 critical writers and journalists around the world faced criminal charges, and another twenty were murdered. Once a year current and former recipients of the "Writers in Exile" scholarship meet. They read from their newest works, network and talk about their experiences. ARTS.21 was there.
