Soon after, John's father passed and he was sent to an orphanage at the tender age of 8. At 17, John and his wife, Abigail, whom he met at the orphanage, ran away with no skills or education to speak of. The two joined Dutch van der Linde's gang where he nurtured them, teaching them how to read, gather, shoot, murder, and steal - the essentials of a perfectly normal, Western lifestyle.Together with Dutch van der Linde, Bill Williamson, and Javier Escuella, they robbed, raided, and murdered all across the Western Frontier, striking terror into the hearts of Western settlers all the while piquing the interest of the authorities. Dutch's gang were misguided, self-made heroes in villain's dress, as they stole from the rich that included as many as 40 banks, and gave to the poor. But in 1906, when a robbery goes wrong, John is shot and left to die by Bill Williamson and the gang. But he survived the ordeal and John retired from the outlaw lifestyle and settled down with his wife. The Bureau of Investigation would have none of that and sought to exterminate tyranny of outlaws by becoming tyrants themselves. To that end, newly appointed bureau director, Edgar Ross, kidnaps John's wife and son and extorts his services in hunting down his former comrades; Dutch van der Linde, Bill Williamson, and Javier Escuella.
