This form of welfare known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program , is supposed to be for people who are unemployed, disabled, elderly, or military veterans. According to numbers from the US Department of Agriculture, 2 point 8 percent more American citizens were dependent on food stamps in April of 2013 compared with a year earlier. Mississippi has a higher percentage of people using food stamps than any other state with 22 percent, but Washington D.C. had 23 percent of its population on food stamps. 4 million people in Texas are registered to receive food stamps, and 3 point 2 million people use them in New York state. Almost one out of every six Americans is using food stamps. A few states reported less people using food stamps this year, but overall, more Americans need the government assistance. Wyoming had the lowest percentage of people on food stamps with 7 percent of the state using them.
