issue, it’s extremely gratifying,” said Joe Cornely of the Ohio Farm Bureau.
Passage of Issue 2 creates a 13-member livestock care standards board that will be chaired by the Director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Cornely says the hope now is that the Ohio legislature will act quickly to establish the enabling legislation.
“Now the appropriate committees in the Ohio House and Senate will come up with the specifics of the mandate for this livestock care standards board,” said Cornely. “We’d like to see that done by early spring, have the board fully functional, up and running as quick as possible.

In a statement following passage of Issue 2, Wayne Pacelle, President and CEO of the Humane Society of United States (HSUS) said, “By packaging Issue 2 as pro-animal welfare and pro-food safety, the architects of the ballot measure went along way to assure its passage. Now that the Issue 2 campaign is over, we can get on with real reform – a measure to phase out the extreme confinement of animals in veal crates, gestation crates and battery cages.”
In other words, HSUS will be back.
