The year was 1967 and Switzer was seen by some as a threat to the all-male tradition of the Boston Marathon. The story of that historic race and what happened to Switzer as a result (a race official tried to forcibly stop her from running – see photo) is the stuff of legend. We will hear it from her directly.
We’re also talking with Alec Wilkinson this week, a writer for The New Yorker magazine. Back in August, Wilkinson took on an assignment about the adventure sport of free diving. Free diving is where participants dive as deep as they can in the ocean while holding one single breath. We ask Wilkinson how the topic came to his attention and whether or not he aims to try it (and how long he’s able to hold his breath underwater in the bathtub).
