Augmented Reality Use for Consumers
by Andrew McCaskey
AR Could be More Than Novelty
The Urban Spoon augmented reality app has made it to both the Android and iPhone platforms – and soon will, at least in urban areas, begin to provide a succession of layers of information on restaurants. Location aware, drawing upon socially derived ratings and trends, there’s a chance to serve the public interest as well.
Consider the layer that should be available – namely the health inspection records for the restaurant on a given street. It should be possible to derive overlays that would show the scores, citations or how long a given restaurant has been checked.
Consider the layer that could be available – the violent crimes report for a particular section of street, or robbery reports for a given parking garage.
There’s probably a business there somewhere – taking information that is in the public domain (or should be) and packaging it into layers for those who have an interest.
