Collateral Damage

Ars Technica reports that
“Just when it seems the music industry is starting to come around to the realities of digital distribution, groups representing songwriters, composers, and music publishers are hoping to tack on additional licensing fees to music downloaded online. If fact, the group would like to earn performances fees even from the 30-second previews you can hear when you browse the iTunes Store.”
The flip answer is ” how’s that workin for ya ?” But it is a real problem. The performing artists have a chance to continue to make money from Live Concerts, T-Shirt sales, concert DVD sales and fan clubs. And so far, it looks like the song writers and composers are not getting much of a cut of that revenue stream.
That’s where they need to look, rather than trying to squeeze the fees directly. In the end, the consumer is going to pay for fees tacked on to the previews, one way or another. Songwriters are going to find it easier to work with the artists directly than they will from consumers twice removed.Who would just as soon steal the songs anyway, except that the iTunes Music Store is just a lot more convenient.
