to Maryland and Delaware's ocean resorts, as well as an alternate route to Interstate 95. Because of this heavy usage, it has become known for it's traffic congestion and stoppages, especially during the summer months. We travel the original span in our video, which when built in 1952 was the world's longest continuous over-water steel structure. It is 4.3 miles long and at it's highest point, is 186 feet over the shipping channels used by ocean-going ships headed to and from Port of Baltimore from all over the world. In 1973 an addition span was built which added 3 more traffic lanes. For some, the bridge is a white knuckle ride, while for others the State of Maryland contracts with private companies to provide drivers at a cost of $25-$35, to transport those who are faint of heart and too nervous to attempt the crossing.
