Each morning at 10am, Crushpad friends and family cross the fermentation threshold to take part in Crushcamp. This winemaking overview attempts to squeeze a semester at UC Davis into 3-hours; with grapes stains from splatter, spatter, smear and splash counting for extra credit.  Each camp session brings a new twist as whichever winery operations need to be taken care of, dictate the direction the class takes. Some camps fly by soaked with adrenal-fueled action; dodging and winding our way through the ballet of forklifts and pallet jacks. Other camp experiences have the quiet focus and clarity of a Kurosawa film. Here, Crushcamp may center around adding nutrients to fermentations and inoculating grape musts with yeast. Either tract brings fantastic questions, new insights and deeper understanding of the winemaking process.
