Rick Pitino, the Boston Celtics' coach and president, calls himself a small-time player in horse racing. But in yesterday's Breeders' Cup Preview Day at Belmont Park, he found himself a winner in a big way. The Groom Is Red, a 2-year-old bay colt owned by Pitino and his partners in Celtic Pride Stables, came roaring from off the pace to win the $400,000 Champagne Stakes and establish himself as not only a contender for year-end honors but also for consideration as an early choice for the 1999 Kentucky Derby. The Groom Is Red, under Corey Nakatani -- who also won the $400,000 Beldame with the heavy favorite Sharp Cat -- trailed by as many as 15 lengths in the early going, then came wide at the head of the stretch and charged to the lead to beat Lemon Drop Kid by 23/4 widening lengths. His time for the 11/16 miles over the sloppy track was 1:424/5 , the same time as run by Confessional, a 101/2 -length upset winner over Things Change in the $400,000 Frizette for 2-year-old fillies. It was the third straight victory for The Groom Is Red, who broke his maiden on his fourth attempt at Saratoga on Sept. 4 and then turned in an astounding late run to win his last start on Sept. 25 by a nose. ''I'm having a great ride,'' said Pitino, whose hopes in this year's Triple Crown were dashed when Halory Hunter, who was fourth in the Derby, fractured a cannon bone four days before the Preakness. ''I'm a very lucky man. The horse was terrific, Nakatani was special and the trainer is just unbelievable.'' The trainer, of course, is Nick Zito, who has saddled two Kentucky Derby winners in Strike the Gold and Go for Gin and now is hoping to shoot for No. 3 with The Groom Is Red, purchased for Pitino earlier this year for $150,000. ''This is a race I've always wanted to win -- ever since I can remember there were two races I wanted to win, the Kentucky Derby and the Champagne, and now I've won them both,'' Zito said. ''It's unbelievable how these horses come out of the clouds.'' Unlike his other 2-year-olds, with whom he took a more conservative approach, Zito has big plans for the little colt he has nicknamed ''Kid Dynamite'' and whom he likens to the late Yankee player and manager Billy Martin. ''He's a different horse,'' Zito said of The Groom is Red, who returned $15 for a $2 win bet. ''He broke his maiden by seven lengths and in his next race he was hopelessly beaten and then he won. ''We haven't had a 2-year-old champion win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and the Kentucky Derby. He's done things that other horses haven't, and the one thing we'd like to do is be the only horse to ever win the Breeders' Cup and the Derby. We'd like to be first.'' Pitino, who owns 13 horses, said he would rather be coaching. But if things do not change in the labor dispute between the National Basketball Association and its players union, he would attend the Breeders' Cup on Nov. 7 to watch The Groom Is Red. Racing's day of upsets started at Keeneland's elegant track in the heart of the thoroughbred country today when Lil's Lad, the favorite, was outrun by 2 1/2 lengths by Halory Hunter in the Blue Grass Stakes. It was a moment of redemption for Nick Zito, the trainer of Halory Hunter, who turned the tables after losing three straight races to Lil's Lad. It also was a moment that cast considerable confusion on the Kentucky Derby, which Zito has already won twice in this decade, with Strike the Gold in 1991 and Go for Gin in 1994. ''He reminded me of Strike the Gold coming into the Blue Grass,'' Zito said after Halory Hunter made the winner's circle for the first time in six starts since last September. ''In his last three races, he kept getting closer to Lil's Lad, trailing him by six lengths, by three, by just under three. When I came to Kentucky, I was looking for three lengths -- and found it.'' Lil's Lad had been widely ranked as the co-favorite for the Derby with Favorite Trick, whose nine-race winning streak ended today in the Arkansas Derby. In the Blue Grass, Lil's Lad took the lead and held it into the homestretch. But he yielded it when Gary Stevens made a tactical move to the inside with Halory Hunter, who then rushed past the favorite. Cape Town finished two and a half lengths farther back in third. The three horses were trailed by two late recruits: Ian's Thunder, who finished 13 lengths back, and Solid Wood, who ran 19 lengths back in fifth. But this was a three-horse race, and a rerun from the Florida Derby three weeks ago, when Lil's Lad finished first but was disqualified and placed second for interfering with Cape Town in the stretch. Jerry Bailey, the rider on Lil's Lad, saw a replay of the Florida Derby in his colt's performance. ''He did the same thing,'' Bailey said. ''He lugged out, and that's what let Gary Stevens get through on the rail.'' Stevens flew to Kentucky from California to replace Pat Day, who was riding Favorite Trick in Arkansas today, and he gave a virtuoso performance. He kept Halory Hunter in third place, stalking the pace set by the speedy Lil's Lad, with Cape Town second. Then as they reached the upper homestretch, Stevens made his move along the rail.
