LOL. My favorite moment from August’s PBS press tour. I was busy interviewing the Sesame Street gang, so I didn’t realize what happened at the time. In Steve’s words: “At the TV Critics Press Tour in August, we interviewed Sesame Street. I was so dumbstruck by watching Maria, Grover, and Cookie Monster, that I ACTUALLY REACHED IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA to adjust audio levels on a mixing board we borrowed. To say this is an incredibly stupid thing to do is an understatement. Grover noticed.”

YouTube Direct, a new tool that allows media organizations to request, review and rebroadcast YouTube clips directly from YouTube users. Built from our APIs, this open source application lets media organizations enable customized versions of YouTube’s upload platform on their own websites. Users can upload videos directly into this application, which also enables the hosting organization to easily review video submissions and select the best ones to broadcast on-air and on their websites. As always, these videos also live on YouTube, so users can reach their own audience while also getting broader exposure and editorial validation for the videos they create.

Did the footage out of the country actually change the outcome of the elections? No. Despite a slew of YouTube videos and a couple of thousand foreign Twitter users turning their avatar green and pretending to be in Tehran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is still in power. It’s astonishing, really. Despite how successful ten million actual voters marching through Washington, London and other major cities in 2003 were in stopping the invasion of Iraq, a bit of entirely virtual cyber-posturing by foreigners didn’t lead to real change in Iran. …none of us think we’re being selfish or egotistic when we tweet something, or post a video on YouTube or check-in using someone’s address on Foursquare. It’s just what we do now, no matter whether we’re heading out for dinner or witnessing a massacre on an Army base. Like Lord of the Flies, or the Stanford Prison Experiment , as long as we’re all losing our perspective at the same time – which, as a generation growing up with social media we are – then we don’t realise that our humanity is leaking away until its too late. We simply have more raw news and opinion streaming over and around us. We have to be smarter news consumers and triangulate the truth.

MOTT HALL STUDENTS DISCUSS THE RUN FOR WATER ON CBS’ EARLY SHOW On Tuesday, October 13th, the students at Mott Hall Science and Technology Academy were up at 4:30 A.M. to show their support for clean drinking water. The students have committed to participate in the Dow Live Earth Run for Water on April 18th and were helping us tell the world about the event by appearing on CBS’s The Early Show. It was cold, but the kids from Mott Hall realized that there were kids like them all over the world who didn’t have water in their schools.
