Karez irrigation system in Tulufan, Xinjiang province, China. A vast and ancient underground network of water channels feeds the town and fields, creating a lush oasis. This water allows the native Uyghur people to grow crops (notably grapes). The system involves hand-dug wells and underground channels designed to store the water and control the flow. Vertical well shafts dug at regular access points tap into the water flow from distant mountain springs. Tulufan is located in the second deepest geographical depression in the world. The climate is dry with temperatures ranging from -20c in the winter to +50c in the summer (it was +46c on the day this film was made!)

Dans son édition du vendredi 2 août, le New York Times affirme que l’administration Bush tiendrait des preuves irréfutables de l’implication des services secrets du Pakistan (ISI) dans l’attentat à la bombe contre l’ambassade d’Inde à Kaboul, la capitale afghane, survenu le 7 juillet dernier. Les renseignements américains disent en effet avoir intercepté des communications peu équivoques entre «des responsables de l’Inter Services Intelligence» (ISI, les services secrets pakistanais) et les terroristes qui ont perpétré cet attentat meurtrier. "OTHER PLACES" is a series of films that capture the character of town life in different places around the globe. Take a look inside the everyday world of people somewhere different. Right now I'm showing some simple version of data experimentally and I'm planning to publish a main version some time in the spring 2008.

Pichan, a small town floating on the desert. Called to a halt and welcomed hospitably, the loneliness of travel is somewhat relieved.

A donkey cart slowly passing through, swaying along over the sea of sand. In Charchan it is easy to lose track of time.

A Kazakh family constructs a yurt for a wedding party northwestern China.

Grasslands stretch away before you as you emerge from the area where the Uyghurs live. A dazzling vision of blue sky opening out above a carpet of grass.

Hotan. They say on some days such clouds of dust blow up that you cannot see in front of you. The vague shapes floating beyond the dust clouds are the real thing: an ancient oasis city.

On the east side of the town, bustling Uyghur street stalls stand side by side. People work hard at their trade, or steal a nap in the shade, and energetic children play. Under the gentle sunshine, this town bursts with so many different expressions of humanity that it makes your heart sing.

Tashkurgan, on the China-Pakistan border. At this beautiful little village inhabited by Tajiks, travellers coming and going between the two countries can rest their legs. The line of beautiful mountains rejuvenates a body and mind made weary by travel.

A corner of Kashgar. The landscape of the town, riddled like a maze with charming alleyways, shows us a fragile vision of time rewound. The moment you leave, you tire of the modern townscape and long to return to lose yourself in it once more, hoping to conjure up that vision again and again. Kashgar. The crossroads at the heart of the Silk Road. The crossroads where cultures met.

If you leave Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, and head west towards Kashgar, you can feel, in the towns you pass, a sense of being in another, Islamic country. There are also scattered Buddhist ruins left by the Aryan peoples who once lived in the vicinity of the towns.

Kandy, which flourished as the capital of the Kingdom of Kandy, the last Sinhalese royal dynasty. Temples encircle the town, recollecting the city's past splendour as a religious capital. In 1815, the holy city which had repulsed Portuguese and Dutch invasions, finally surrendered to the British, and the curtain fell on over twenty-three centuries of Sinhalese independence. The temples, which have witnessed the waxing and waning fortunes of the great holy city throughout the ages, continue watch over it today.
