From : Instablogs
http://www.instablogs.com/ Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari is visiting China on what is being billed as his first official visit abroad. Pakistan has long seen China as its most reliable friend, in contrast to the United States, whose support has waxed and waned in line with U.S. strategic interests in the region. China, Zardari s first choice for an official visit Both Pakistan and China have been good friends for more than six decades and have stood with each other through thick and thin. There is nothing unusual about President Zardari s visit to China since it happens to be the closest and the most reliable friend of Pakistan. The overbearing attitude of United States towards Pakistan especially during the conduct of war on terror and the repeated violations of Pakistan s sovereignty time and again to serve its own interests has left many in the country infuriated. This, combined with US withering economic clout has left Pakistan with little alternative but to strengthen ties with China. Unlike US, China has consistently supported Pakistan and both have enjoyed mutually beneficial relationship in the past. There is no harm in giving up on past relationships that are no longer fructuous and instead invest in friendships that are more yielding. Today Pakistan s economy is in utter turmoil we need china s help to salvage us from the worst economic scenario. Besides together Pakistan and China can also act as counterweight to India which has been an existential threat to us. A research carried out by Media AIDS and Health Watch has revealed that more Malawian children are being exposed to pornographic materials than ever. Most of them are siblings of Commercial Sex Workers (CSW), a section that lets their children watch pornographic films and videos in the name of their profession. Pornigraphy endemic in Malawi A research in Malawi reveals that 21 percent of children whose parents, relatives or guardians own a television set have at one time been exposed to pornographic materials in the past four years. Most of them exposed are siblings of Commercial Sex Workers a sector of Malawi society that let their children watch pornographic films and videos in the name of their profession. For other children, watching takes place in the absence of parents, or any adult, an indication that children are also aware that pornography is not good for their mental growth. Some of these children have gone on to commit sexual offenses, thinking they may not be punished accordingly for their behavior. Concerned authorities in Malawi should work with the Censorship Board to prevent more and more children from getting exposed to pornographic material. Awareness must be raised about the evils of pornography among the sexual workers; the most vulnerable group given the nature of their profession. Brazilian President Luis Ignacio Lula de Silva has signed an agreement to make changes to Portuguese spelling in Brazil. The newly adopted laws aim to simplify spellings by eliminating some ``silent'' letters and accents Brazil adopts changes in Portuguese language Around 250 million people speak Portuguese around the world: Portugal, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, East Timor, Sao Tome and Principe. People around the world have developed their own linguistic variation of Portuguese which has developed a need to unify all these variations and reach some kind of standardization. Several spelling rules will change so that the different variations may become more similar. Both Portugal and Brazil have signed agreements and are ready to enter apply the new rules in the next 2 years. However, this is nothing more than a pressure exerted by large publishers so they can reach new markets. The proposed changes in the majority will not facilitate the learning of language; instead it will only further confuse those who have not mastered the language. The Portuguese is a very difficult language and even the Brazilians can't understand hundreds of grammatical rules. For example, there are 12 verb tenses, each for a specific situation. Finally, things will become even harder if the Brazilians are no longer able to modify the language as and when new rules apply. India Asia's third-largest economy is growing by nearly 9 percent a year driven largely by consumer demand from the middle-class and soaring foreign investment. Despite the boom, recent official data has shown that an estimated 800 million of India's billion-plus people live on 50 U.S. cents a day. Social economic divide in India The luxury mall undoubtedly symbolizes the socio economic divide in modern India. This genre of apartheid is not anew to India. Our ancient and medieval past is stuffed with rotund and self gratifying Maharajas. They indulged in unimaginable luxury and opulence, completely apathetic to the horrifying poverty of their subjects. However, those times were different. The despotic political set up and social beliefs manipulated the popular mindset into accepting their deprivation as the will of providence. What should put modern India to shame is the recurrence of similar division of society into haves and have nots. Ours is a democratic set up that promised equal social and economic opportunities at the time of independence. It is not the which is to be blamed for our growing disparities. It s the failure to deliver social justice and development to India's poorest regions that have alienated people and helped open up economic,. In a superficially shining India we may count ourselves as no less than anyone else but then it s our shanty slum which meets the eyes that comes calling to India. http://www.instablogs.com/

From : YouTube :: Videos by AtGoogleTalks
An eye-opening and previously untold story, Factory Girls is the first look into the everyday lives of the migrant factory population in China. China has 130 million migrant workers—the largest migration in human history. In Factory Girls, Leslie T. Chang, a former correspondent for the Wall Street Journal in Beijing, tells the story of these workers primarily through the lives of two young women, whom she follows over the course of three years as they attempt to rise from the assembly lines of Dongguan, an industrial city in China's Pearl River Delta. A book of global significance that provides new insight into China, Factory Girls demonstrates how the mass movement from rural villages to cities is remaking individual lives and transforming Chinese society, much as immigration to America's shores remade our own country a century ago. Leslie T. Chang lived in China for a decade as a correspondent for the Wall Street Journal. She is married to Peter Hessler, who also writes about China. She lives in Colorado. From : Instablogs
http://www.instablogs.com/ Indian Roman Catholics have their first female saint after Pope Benedicr XVI canonized Sister Alphonsa to sainthood at Vatican. The canonization comes at a time when Christians have been attacked by Hindu mobs in eastern and southern India. Sister Alphonsa India s first female saint Pope Benedict XVI canonised of Sister Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception in the Vatican.Thousands of Christian Indians travelled to Rome for the ceremony. The Pope described her as "an exceptional woman", who lived in "extreme physical and spiritual suffering", Sister Alphonsa is only the second Indian to be elevated to sainthood. She was so determined to become a nun that she stepped into a fire to disfigure her feet so that her aunt would stop pressuring her to marry. She was plagued by serious illness for much of her life, but was known for her stoicism and compassion. She died in 1946 aged 36. After her death, numerous miracles were attributed to her powerful faith.. The canonization follows attacks on India's Christian minority by Hindu mobs in the east and south of the country. The Pope urged Christians and Hindus to "work together in building a civilisation of love". Filipinos in the United Kingdom have condemned a BBC sketch comedy for airing a skit that is considered demeaning to Filipino domestic helpers. The "Harry and Paul show showed a Filipino domestic worker in a maid's uniform dancing provocatively in front of a man in an attempt to seduce him. Racist skit reflects Pinoy migrant plight The "racist" portrayal of a Filipina domestic worker in a comedy show of the British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC) was only reflective of the true plight of Overseas Filipino Workers. Lack of opportunities for comfortable income force Filipinos to work overseas where they face racism, discrimination at the workplace, sexual harassment, rape, and other violent attacks. The BBC sketch is a painful reminder of the real plight of Overseas Filipino Workers which is often ignored by the Philippine government. The much-criticized skit, aired in the September 26 episode of "Harry and Paul,." It showed comedian Harry Enfield telling a postman that he is ordering his Filipino maid to mate with his friend Paul Whitehouse. The Philippine government should formally protest the racist slur. Overseas Filipino Workers are often times called heroes. President Arroyo's praise for the overseas migrants will only become more meaningless if such racial insults are not opposed. It is fast becoming the power house of Latin America with a registered growth rate of 10 percent. Growing economic clout combined with political stability has given Brazil an opportunity to play a major role in world affairs. Brazilian economy marches at phenomenal pace Brazil is all set to become a country for the future with its fast growing economy moving ahead at a phenomenal pace. The country s expanding manufacturing sector, rising agriculture output, mineral oil industry are together fuelling its economic advancement. From : Revver - medical Videos
Author: autocrossing Added: Thu, 09 Oct 2008 15:53:25 -0800 Duration: 217EmploymentCrossing.com The United Auto Workers ratified a four-year contract with Mitsubishi Motors North America that calls for employees at a central Illinois plant to take pay cuts in exchange for job security. Mitsubishi agreed to no involuntary layoffs for the 1,200 plus workers at the Normal,Illinois plant, and guaranteed the factory will stay open through 2012 when the new contract expires. A spokesman for the union said 54 percent of voting members approved the contract and 46 percent voted against it. Union President Ron Gettelfinger released a statement saying, "The bargaining team delivered an agreement that will protect jobs and provide four years of stability for our members and their communities." The agreement goes into effect Monday. It also includes a two-tiered wage system, retirement offers and medical benefit changes. In 2006, the plant's workers agreed to a round of pay and benefit cuts in exchange for the promise that their jobs would be safe for two years. The plant opened in 1988. It now employs fewer than half the workers it did at its peak about 10 years ago. Normal, Illinois has a population of 50,000.

 From : Instablogs
http://www.instablogs.com/ Mixed results for Lula in Brazil s local elections In this Sunday were held elections in all municipalities to choose new mayors and city councilors. Voting is mandatory in Brazil. Around 125 million people voted in electronic ballot, which ensures a process of verification of the votes faster, safer and effective. In most of Brazil, the elections passed without major problems. Of the more than 5,000 municipalities, only 100 had some kind of problem, such as the arrest of election candidates doing propaganda in places of voting. In about 400 cities, the army's presence was needed tfor the security of voters against possible attacks by criminal gangs. It is too early to say who will be the winners, but about 50% of the votes have been counted. Moreover, in cities with more than 100 thousand voters, there will be a second runoff. However, these elections are a preparation for the elections of 2010, in which new governors and a new president will be chosen. The governors who get elect "their candidates" will be strengthened for the presidential campaign. Lula, despite it high level of popularity, is still unable to choose a viable successor and the main opposition candidate, Jose Serra, seems to emerge stronger after today. Pakistani cinema showcasing Bollywood Cinema owners in Pakistan are trying to showcase movies that attract families and young viewers. The latest Bollywood flick running to packed houses within Pakistan is Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif starrer 'Singh is King'- the movie has been a complete delight for any Pakistani moviegoer passionate about the Bollywood films. Pakistan and India might have their long held differences, but nothing can deny the fact that Pakistanis prefer Indian film productions that are slick and lavishly produced. It is also no secret that most travel abroad just to watch the latest Bollywood flick starring their favorite actors and actresses. It is vital that the Pakistani government remove the ban on showcasing Indian movies so that their exhibition and distribution pours in money vital to revive our production houses. This will help increase the competitiveness of the Pakistani cinema besides keeping the country's millions entertained. Mexicans observe 1968 massacre Thousands of Mexicans marched across the nation's capital the Mexican government to establish the truth behind a deadly clampdown on student protesters 40 years ago and punish the perpetrators. The failure to confront the massacre on October 2, 1968, when security forces opened fire on students gathered in the Tlatelolco Square in the capital Mexico City, had left a "deep scar" in Mexican society. That scar can only be healed by full disclosure, bringing the perpetrators to justice and providing reparations to the victims or their families. It is shameful the even 40 years after the massacre the details of that day remain unclear, even the number of those killed. President Calderon cannot remain silent on this dark chapter in Mexico's history. The Mexicans in general and the victims families in particular want the administration to open all relevant archives and records, establish a new and independent inquiry and punish those responsible for this horrific crime. Lowest water levels in Sea of Galilee The government of Israel seems to be oblivious to the damage being caused to the country's largest lake, the Sea of Galilee. Four years of drought and relentless demand from homeowners and farmers has brought down the water levels to the lowest record ever. Despite the falling levels, pumping of the water continues from the lake. The main factor driving the unquenchable thirst is Israel's projection of itself as a country of pioneering farmers who made the desert bloom, much in contrast to the previous Palestinian owners who were prepared to live on the barren land. The Israeli government must initiate stricter measures to stop cultivation of alien crops that are not suited to the desert and then exported to the west. The drop in the water levels is not only causing increased salination but also affecting the fish stocks. The government should seriously consider establishing desalination plants and begin valuing its ecology before the water disappears all together. http://www.instablogs.com/

 From : popular posts - blip.tv (beta)
In July, 2008 the American Federation of Teachers held its convention in Chicago. Present there was the national a rank-and-file teachers group, the Peace and Justice Caucus . Their work at the Convention was to promote resolutions on peace, immigrants rights, support of Puerto Rican teachers, and other issues. This video explores aspects of their work, as well as issues raised by Chicago rank-and-file teachers concerned with the actions of Chicago Teachers Union President Marilyn Stewart, co-chair of the convention and AFT Vice President. Stewart had invited Chicago Public Schools CEO Arne Duncan, who had eliminated many teachers' jobs and closed schools, to speak at the convention, while she was trying to fire her CTU Vice President, who was elected to that position by the membership. The P&J Caucus also protested that the convention was opened by military student color guard with guns. Scenes and interviews. 28 minutes. Produced by Labor Beat, the Chicago-based labor tv series.
