WordPress Plugins and Themes News Parent and Child Theme Confusion in WordPress 2.7: With WordPress 2.7 comes a new layer to WordPress Themes: Parent and Child Themes. Traditionally, when WordPress loads a Theme, it pulls it from its Theme directory. With WordPress 2.7, you can have two Theme directories, a parent directory which holds the downloaded Theme, and a child directory which holds the core changes and modifications of a Parent WordPress Theme. This new layered approach protects WordPress Themes along with the automatic Theme updating and loading. Instead of making changes in the Theme itself, you make modifications in the Child Theme. WordPress looks for information there before it loads the Parent Theme, protecting the core Theme while allowing modifications from the Child Theme. For example, you can have a custom login landing page in the WordPress Administration Panels for editors with feeds and information they need to know. Authors and/or Contributors could be redirected to a page of assignments, reminders, or straight to the Write Post Panel, rather than the traditional WordPress dashboard panel. Expect to see more Plugins and uses of this new login redirection filter. Woopra WordPress Plugin Updated: The Woopra WordPress Plugin for the popular Woopra web analytics program, which incorporates Woopra statistics into your WordPress blog, has been updated again. Mark Jaquith has published the list which includes the US Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, and Coast Goard, the Defense Intelligence Agency, Department of State, Department of Treasury, DEA, FBI, CIA, SNA, and more. Matt s point was that if they are using it, WordPress must be doing something write with security - especially with these security concious agencies helping the WordPress community. WordPress 2.6.1 Released: WordPress 2.6.1 has been released. They cleaned up the problems with the right-to-left languages and fixed over 60 things needing fixing. Ozh Offers the First WordPress Plugin API for the Admin Drop Down Menu WordPress Plugin: Planet Ozh updated the popular Admin Drop Down Menu WordPress Plugin with localization, fun icons, and an API that will allow others to hook into the Plugin with their Plugins. WordPress 2.6 Stats: Matt Mullenweg released some numbers on WordPress 2.6. Within the first 10 days, there are 201,000 blogs using 2.6. The English version had been downloaded on average 23,000 a day. According to the WordPress Development blog, there have been 34 issues fixed so far for the upcoming release of 2.6.1. WordCamp UK Simon Dickson Presentation: The presentation by Simon Dickson has been declared a showstopper at WordCamp UK and he goes into more detail about the things he covered on using WordPress within a business, including a the use of WordPress for 10 Downing Street, the seat of the British Prime Minister. He also offered tips on how WordPress could improve, especially as a CMS. WordPress 2.5 Branch No Longer Supported: The announcement of the release of WordPress 2.6 came with the news that WordPress 2.5 will no longer be supported. It is nearly identical to the new version and has little impact on Themes and Plugins. WordPress Theme Directory Submissions: Matt Mullenweg reports that more than 300 WordPress Themes have been added to the new WordPress Theme Directory in the first 6 days. WordPressMU 2.6 Released: WordPressMU 2.6 has been released and Donncha offers details on the improvements, including bringing it up to WordPress 2.6 specs. It should allow faster and easier upgrades and modifications from version to version.
