But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." John 14:25-27 We are never alone, for God's Spirit is always with us. Charles Finney was a vital figure in the Second Great Awakening. He preached much, compelling people to repent and return to Christ. The reason behind his influence he attributes to the Holy Spirit. As he puts it, God gave him Holy Spirit fillings "that went through me, as it seemed, body and soul. I immediately found myself endued with such power from on high that a few words dropped here and there to individuals were the means of their immediate conversion. My words seemed to fasten like barbed arrows in the souls of men. They cut like a sword. They broke the heart like a hammer. Multitudes can attest to this...Sometimes I would find myself in a great measure empty of this power. I would go and visit, and find that I made no saving impression. I would exhort and pray with the same results. I would they set apart a day for private fasting and prayer...after humbling myself and crying out for help, the power would return upon me with all its freshness. This has been the experience of my life." One of Christ's last promises before He ascended to Heaven, was the promise of a Comforter, the Holy Spirit, to believers. He promised that when He was gone, He would send the Holy Spirit to be with believers, to minister unto them once they were saved. Imagine if Christ had not promised us the Holy Spirit. Imagine a life without God's Spirit with us each day. Who would personally convict us of sin? Who would empower and embolden us to witness to others? Who would work in the lives of others when we do witness? Who would comfort us when we face difficulty? Who would be our guide when we need answers? The Holy Spirit isn't merely God's presence in our lives; He is God working in and through us each day. The Holy Spirit was with the disciples on the Day of Pentecost and worked mightily through them. Even so, the Holy Spirit is with us and wants to use us to accomplish God's will for our lives. Even as early as in Exodus, God used His Spirit to work in the lives of His followers, "And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship" (Exodus 31:3). How often do you listen to the Holy Spirit? He desires to work in our lives, but sometimes we quench Him through our living or by ignoring His commands. In one of the shortest verses in the Bible, God gives us a clear command: "Quench not the Spirit" (1 Thessalonians 5:19). God desires to work in your life through His Spirit, but your actions can often quench His Spirit. Living wrong, following sin, and falling into ungodliness can quench the work the Spirit is trying to do. This is why staying right with God and walking with Him is so important. Aren't you thankful that no matter where you go, or in what situation you find yourself, the Holy Spirit is with you? God's Spirit is working in your life right now if you're allowing Him to! Spend a few minutes thanking God for sending the Holy Spirit to not only live in you, but to work through you. Also, make sure your actions aren't quenching the Spirit. Let God's Spirit have full access to work in and through you today.
