After removing the bulk of the pins material it s time to clean things up with a mallet and chisel. Tommy lends advice on how to get a tight joint and prevent tear out with a backstop or patients. After cleaning up the pins it doubles as a stencil for marking the tails. Tommy stresses the fact before cutting the tails leave the line on the inside. Close friend, mentor, and regular contributor of the podcast, Steve Brown - Cabinet and Furniture making Department Head joins Tommy as they talk about the curriculum and what to expect as a North Bennet School student in the Cabinet and Furniture making program.

In this mini series Simple Joinery, Tommy demonstrates how he executes some of the more widely used joinery. Today he talks about the dovetail, more specifically half-blind dovetails and through dovetails. Stay tuned in the next video as Tommy explains how he keeps his chisels sharp and clean followed by a mortise and tenon joint video.

In the last video while Tommy explained how he executes a dovetail he mentioned how important it was to have a sharp chisel. To follow this up he explains how he goes about sharpening his chisel. While there are endless ways to maintain your tools Tommy has found a process that works best for him. Do your research, experiment, and find what works best for you.
