Episode 58 - Gadget Station (Pt. 2)
from The Wood Whisperer Woodworking Video Podcast July 21, 2008
For the first time ever, I am using mail-ordered wood. This material came from Bell Forest Products and I was very impressed with the quality. The shipment came in two packs and contained some really nice wide bubinga boards, as well as a piece ebony for the trim and some spalted maple for the doors. I sticker and stack the wood and talk about acclimation, and how it pertains to this particular situation. I talk a little bit about moisture meters as well and finish up by showing my strategy for cutting the cabinet parts out of the rough lumber so that the grain flows nicely.

Chopping a Mortise By Hand
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) July 20, 2008
This is just a simple video demonstrating how I chop a mortise using a chisel. One reason this technique is supposedly better than drilling (followed by hogging out the waste) is that the levering action of the chisel helps to tidy up the walls of the mortise.I dunno about that, but this is a fairly quick way of making a decent mortise.

Here's our interview with the Dean of Windsor Chairmakers, Michael Dunbar. Michael, along with his wife Sue, are owners of the The Windsor Institute , the only school in the world dedicated to teaching the art of building Windsor chairs. He has single handedly been responsible for the revival of building Windsor chairs, an art that was almost lost. Michael and his staff have also worked with many tool makers to improve the specialized tools involved in the making of chairs. His enthusiasm for Windsor chairs and for hand tools comes through loud and clear during our interview. I know you're going to enjoy listening to Michael talk about how he got started in woodworking, The Windsor Institute, and what he will be teaching at this year's Woodworking in America Conference. 283 Whiteside Brass Gauges - the Video
from Matt's Basement Workshop July 06, 2008
When it comes to finding a tool(s) that can speed up your set up of router bits or blades I've been very skeptical. But I've been won over by the brass height gauges from Whiteside. These little pieces of brass allow me to accurately set up bits so quickly I'm still convinced I'm doing something wrong, but the fact is these accurate results are repeatable over and over... from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 29, 2008
This is a very important interview for the furniture design and woodworking community as a whole with Wendell Castle. Those of you who follow the blog are prepared for this interview. You have been exposed to his web site, gone through his design process, and I have built a piece inspired by Castle in stack and bent lamination. techniques that Castle brought to the forefront in pushing furniture design. This interview is the culmination of presenting to you, a very important figure in our craft. We all know Maloof, Nakishima, and Carpenter, but it was Wendell Castle who pushed the boundaries of art and furniture. And one of the original 5 to open the Smithsonians', Renwick Gallery.Enjoy part 1 of the interview, I'm excited to be with Wendell, and we go into areas other individuals wouldn't know how to get to.Prior to our sit-down, Mr Castle menioned he didn't know the answers to many of my questions, but that's OK, lets just go somewhere. What a great opportunity this approach provided me and it played out to the max.Enjoy.................. history will prove this interview to be very important.Neil

282 Lumber Species of the Month - Spalted Lumber
from Matt's Basement Workshop June 27, 2008
It's been a little while but lumber species of the month is back again. Today though, we're not talking about a specific species of lumber but more of an beneficial defect that can be found in lumber. Spalted lumber refers to any lumber in which a fungus or mold has begun to decay the wood and leaves a really unique pattern and color in the grain that looks like nothing else. Thanks to Highland Woodworking for donating a WoodSlicer Resaw Bandsaw Blade for this week's schwag giveaway. If you're in the market for a great blade, this is the one. It resawed 4/4, 4 wide red oak boards on my 1/3 HP, 50 year old bandsaw like it was slicing bread (no exaggeration!!). And if you're not in the market for a bandsaw blade at least stop by and enter for a chance to win a Festool Kapex during their 30th Anniversary Giveaway. If you'd like to enter for free schwag or just have a comment, question or suggestion drop me a line at mattsbasementworkshop@gmail.com or head over to my website at www.mattsbasementworkshop.com or call our Skype Voicemail at 231 354-2338.
