In the World Ye Shall Have Tribulation: But Be of Good Cheer; I Have Overcome the World (Camille Fronk)
from LDS Voices September 22, 2008
Camille Fronk, Associate Professor of Ancient Scripture at BYU BYU Women s Conference 2004 I wish to focus my remarks today on the role of Christ s enabling power in our ability to feel cheer amid mortal gloom and doom. Misfortune and hardship lose their tragedy when viewed through the lens of the Atonement. The process could be explained this way: The more we know the Savior, the longer becomes our view. The more we see His truths, the more we feel His joy. But it is one thing to know that s the right answer in a Sunday School class and quite another to experience firsthand a cheerful outlook when current circumstances are far from what we hoped. If we would develop faith to apply the Atonement in this manner and not merely talk about it, awareness of imaginary finite boundaries, inadvertently placed on the Savior s infinite sacrifice, can be meaningful. The Precious Promise (Neal A. Maxwell)
from LDS Voices February 27, 2008
Neal A. Maxwell, Quorum of the Twelve Apostles BYU Women s Conference 2002 Now, my beloved sisters, I have one reservation in speaking to you. You are already so conscientious, and my desire is to lift you up, not to weigh you down. Please remember, therefore, that as I speak, preceding any exhortation is my admiration for you! You are likely to be doing much better than you realize. . . . When we emerge from a fiery furnace or trial, we don t run around to find another fiery furnace in order to stand in line to get an extra turn. Sisters, we will be amply supplied with tests and tribulations. There s no need to search for them! So, now, my saying a few things about character should be more in the nature of a caress of confirmation to you than an excess of exhortation. Transcript Transcript of Elder Maxwell s remarks. Search Diligently in the Light of Christ (Wendy L. Watson)
from LDS Voices January 17, 2008
Wendy L. Watson, BYU Professor of Family Sciences BYU Women s Conference 1997 When you need more light in your life, consider reading, pondering, and praying about Doctrine and Covenants 88, and see what happens. This section gives me that I don t dare breathe kind of feeling. You know those times of reading the scriptures when you feel yourself getting close to something more wonderful than you ve uncovered or discovered before and you don t want to breathe for fear of dislodging the increasing light? Doctrine and Covenants 88 is one of my light-filled scriptural oases, the effect of which is so much better than that of any tricyclic antidepressant the world has to offer. It's About Time (Mary Ellen Edmunds)
from LDS Voices December 13, 2007
Mary Ellen Edmunds, Member of the Relief Society General Board BYU Women s Conference 1997 One of our challenges is to figure out which are the most important things in our life where we should be putting our time and our energy and our other resources right now, in this season of our lives. President Ezra Taft Benson taught us that when we put God first, all other things fall into their proper place or drop out of our lives. Our love of the Lord will govern the . . . demands on our time, the interests we pursue, and the order of our priorities Transcript Transcript of Sister Edmunds remarks. Choose Ye This Day (Kathy Pullins)
from LDS Voices December 11, 2007
Kathy Pullins, BYU Law School Associate Dean BYU Women s Conference 2002 Sisters and brothers, we are now being confronted by twenty-first-century Korihors. Those same erroneous philosophies are being redressed and recycled by the adversary and delivered at rapid speed and in multiple mediums. President Ezra Taft Benson observed: The type of apostates in the Book of Mormon is similar to the type we have today. God, with his infinite foreknowledge, so molded the Book of Mormon that we might see the error and know how to combat false educational, political, religious, and philosophical concepts of our time. Indeed, every generation of believers and especially this one has encountered its Korihors, those who would twist and distort the truth. I find it interesting that Korihor emerged against a backdrop of peace after a season of mourning and great spiritual cleansing in the land. It was a time when the freedom of religion was protected, and the existing law in Zarahemla promoted an orderly society. Korihor used those conditions to his advantage and urged the people to replace the prophecies of God with the philosophies of men. Transcript Transcript of Sister Pullins remarks. Bearing Record of Christ (Merrill J. Bateman)
from LDS Voices December 05, 2007
Merrill J. Bateman, BYU President BYU Women s Conference 2001 The scripture reminds us of our responsibility to be ardent witnesses for the Savior, who is the Son of the living God. In this regard, I will address two questions. The first is, To whom shall we bear record? All of us understand that every nation, kindred, tongue, and people must hear the gospel. But are there priorities? The second question concerns the message that we share: As Latter-day Saints, what do we know that will help others know Christ and teach them that He was, that He is and that He will come again? Latter-day Saint doctrine provides a unique understanding of the Father and the Son and our relationship with them. The Savior said in his intercessory prayer that it is life eternal, [to] know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. Through the restored gospel we know more about the Father and Son than any other people. Thus, we carry a major responsibility to share that knowledge with the world. As Sisters in Zion We'll All Work Together (Mary Ellen Smoot, Margaret D. Nadauld, Coleen K. Menlove)
from LDS Voices November 18, 2007
Mary Ellen Smoot, Relief Society General President; Margaret D. Nadauld, Young Women General President; Coleen K. Menlove, Primary General President BYU Women s Conference 2001 We invite you to study the purposes of the women s organizations of the Church and gain an understanding of the power they have to reach every individual. No matter how large the Church becomes, it is also no larger than our own ward boundaries. Whether we are serving in Primary, Young Women, or Relief Society, we can help create an atmosphere in our wards where everyone feels included, everyone feels loved, and everyone feels nourished. We can better feed our Father s sheep and more effectively, if we are united. We can bring new members into the fold as we work together. We are all Relief Society sisters.
