In this final chapter, I will examine the supergroup West, Bruce super teaming of Blind Faith, let s take a close listen to West, Bruce ll start off with the title track of the LP Why Dontcha? From a review, Jack Bruce mixes the blues of Cream with the hard rock of Mountain, while the label gave them maybe a third of Blind Faith hype. Flo s wife and songwriting partner, shooting him to death in their Manhattan apartment. I cannot understand the charge nor the incredibly light sentence she received. I will close it all out with some really good blues, and the favorite of Engineer Ken and I, called Third Degree. Which may or may not have a particularly different meaning for New Yorkers, lol! Hope you enjoyed the Mountainous ride!

As we open Part 3, I will dip back into that solo Leslie West album from 1969, back when there was no group called Mountain. His version of a Bob Dylan song made famous by the Band, and also by Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger s there were some personnel changes. Also in the 70 s, Leslie West kept busy by also playing with The Who on their Who s Next sessions- and he was on the demo of Won t Get Fooled Again. Also on a Bo Diddley 20th Anniversary Tribute All Star Album. And in the 2000 s, he has contributed to an Ozzie Osborne album, plus had solo and group LP s. I will close this chapter out with a song dedicated to our next power blackout! In the next and final podcast, Leslie West joins a supergroup- but were they? Mike

I will continue now with some Mountain proper. West and Pappalardi shared vocals, and they added Corky Laing on drums. Theme For An Imaginary Western was written by Cream s Jack Bruce- hell, the vocal even SOUNDS like Jack Bruce! And that will not be the end of a Leslie West/Jack Bruce connection. Mountain s 4th live concert was at Woodstock 69! And they wrote a song about it- For Yasgur s Farm. My favorite album by Mountain is Nantucket Sleighride. I will have some trivia about just what a Nantucket Sleighride exactly is, dating back to the whaling ship days, plus info about my friend who was a descendant of Owen Coffin on Nantucket Island. Then the band doing an old Chuck Berry chestnut. I will end this episode with a song for Father s Day. OK, so? It is dated. Check out early if you want, lol! More Mountain ahead, so be on the lookout. Mike

We ll begin a multi-part exploration of the music of Leslie West and Mountain. If you are a fan of guitar playing wizardry, you should enjoy this. Though not having anything on the charts in years, Mountain remains popular in this section of the East Coast. And in fairness, Mr. West has lost considerable weight in the years since his heyday! Mountain played hard rock, and were forerunners of Heavy Metal Music. In the beginning there was no group called Mountain- that was simply the name of Leslie West s 1969 solo album. I leave it up to you as to why it was called that- but in my opinion it had much to do with his size. The group name came AFTER its release. Felix Pappalardi played bass on the LP, and produced it- and he had gained fame and fortune for producing the legendary group Cream s albums. West was a premiere guitar player who could always get down with the blues. He was born in New York City, raised on Long Island, and started out as a member of the Vagrants. Interestingly, Mountain played at the original Woodstock before they were formally were known as Mountain! They were not in the movie. At any rate, I will be playing mostly things from that 1st technically solo West album. Some songs perhaps never heard by you, or at least not in long while. This series is about a band well ahead of its time. Mike

I AM AN AMERICAN I AM an AMERICAN. I am not white, I am not black, I am not red, I am not yellow. I AM an AMERICAN, not because of my religious or philosophical beliefs but because of principals and ideals that were handed down to me by my forefathers. I am not rich but neither am I poor because I AM an AMERICAN and I have the right to pursue life, liberty and happiness. I am not a REPUBLICAN, DEMOCRAT, MODERATE, INDEPENDENT, or LIBERTARIAN. I am not a conservative nor am I a liberal. I AM an AMERICAN and I AM FREE to go where I want to go, to do what I want to do and to say what I want to say but I do not believe I have the right to harm my fellowman or indulge in conversation or perform malicious acts that would dishonor my God, Family or Country. I AM an AMERICAN not because I live in America but because America lives in me. I am not free because of our President, Senate, Congress, Supreme Court or Free Press. I am Free because BRAVE and COURAGEOUS men and women endured hardships and made many sacrifices to preserve the Way of Life our Founding Fathers birthed when they drafted and adopted our Great Constitution and started this Nation on the pathway of Democracy. I am forever indebted to our MILITARY, past and present, for it is they who have fought, shed blood and even died, to protect and defend our sacred homeland. It is our Military that should be honored as Heroes because it is they who will battle forces that would try to take away my Freedom and deny me the God given Right to say I AM an AMERICAN. - Ray Cornelius © 2005 Y all ( and all you others) have a great Independence Day. -unc. I will open this chapter with Only In America, having already told you the story behind it. Last year I think it was, I did a 4-part Podcast theme series called A Celebration Of America- and it is here at WLSO.FM. At the end of Part 4, I played that same song but by the Drifters, only because I wanted to play a different interpretation. Not knowing at the time that THEY had done the first and original version! So if you want to hear that piece of history, as I say, it is here. You just have to go back and look for it. After that great song for this holiday, Jay Black at his operatic best with a song by Rodgers s first success as a songwriter? They did a song he wrote called Sunday And Me, and I ve got and will play it, you ll hear if you listen, lol. The band s last hit reached # 19 in 1970, and was an old Ronettes tune. After that, I have a strange one, a curiosity they released in late 1966- an odd, very 60 s sound not at all like what we were used to hearing from them. Even the title is kinda weird, He s Raining In My Sunshine. Far out, man! Turns out Jay Black had a big gambling problem with some big debts, and he sold the group name to pay them off. Of note is that over the years the group included Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, who left to form Steely Dan. Then, I have a couple of treats. One member of the Americans, Kenny Vance, started a group with the Planetones that in 1975 came out of nowhere with their doowop retro style, for an unlikely hit in the midst of what was by then a no longer experimental but a formulaic music scene. Their throwback sound broke the formula, and I just remember it seeming so out of place. But I liked it then and I like it now. As a born and bred New Yorker, I knew about singing in the subways and the bathrooms and Looking For That Echo! I will end this Independence Day show with a song I have played quite a few times before on the radio. I will never understand why this beautiful, wonderful song, done years ago by Eric Andersen, never became a perennial hit. Happy 4th Of July everyone, everywhere! And Happy Birthday America! Mike

For the 4th Of July, I wanted something American. Then it occurred to me- Jay t know whether more than Herman s Hermits or not. After this, she will never have a reason to listen again- certainly not for ME, lol! At the start there was Jay Traynor, and he was replaced by Jay Black. Black had that at times operatic voice, as did Roy Orbison. I ll have the very interesting story of Only In America, ORIGINALLY recorded by the Drifters but given to Jay s radio. Including one in particular, called Think Of The Good Times that had Engineer Ken and I look at each other and smile in recognition, an excellent old forgotten song that revealed nothing by its title, but when it started to play it was instantly recognizable. There are extra studio bits of intro on some of the songs, that being a trend today. Oh, and listen closely for that squeaking door at the beginning of one of the songs! I was feeling very goofy during this show, and that will continue in Part Two- as well as some surprises. I will now get to work to ensure the next half is up in time for the 4th. Mike

Continuing on with Dire Straits, their next album was Love Over Gold. The title was taken from some graffitti they saw! It was their first # 1 album in the UK. After a song from that album, I wanna play a good old piece of Rock s in England. Brothers In Arms was their next album, a huge hit. And the title track was the world s 1st CD single! In fact, the album was one of the first CD s around to choose from. I ll take this one home with an appropriate song. Listening to the playback, I notice my voice going louder and lower- that s what happens with a clogged ear. You can t tell your own volume, lol! Have fun! Mike
