The Senior Choir of Wilfred Jury Public School under the direction of Rosemary Bannerman perform Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" as the closing number for the prelude to begin the Christian Family Sunday service on June 18, 2008 at Strathroy United Church. "Hallelujah" is a song written by Leonard Cohen. It was first recorded on his 1984 album Various Positions. It has been covered numerous times and featured in the soundtracks of several movies and television shows. Different cover versions of "Hallelujah", and different performances by Leonard Cohen himself, sometimes include different lyrics from those in Cohen's original 1984 recording. However, although individual words do change between various versions, most of the variation may be due to selection from Cohen's complete lyrics rather than additions by the cover artist. In a 2001 interview with The Observer, John Cale said: After I saw [Cohen] perform at the Beacon I asked if I could have the lyrics to "Hallelujah". When I got home one night there were fax paper rolls everywhere because Leonard had insisted on supplying all 15 verses." The original recording from 1984 is noted for containing explicit biblical references in the lyrics, alluding to David's harp-playing used to soothe King Saul (I Sam. 16:23), and his later affair with Bathsheba after watching her bathe from his roof. The line "she broke your throne and she cut your hair" is likely a reference to the source of Samson's strength from the Book of Judges. The third verse mentions "the name" (Tetragrammaton). In these instances, the lyrics are overtly sexual. Jeff Buckley called his own rendition of the song an homage to "the hallelujah of the orgasm". In 1994, Cohen released a substantially different version on the album Cohen Live (recorded in 1988), retaining only the final verse from Various Positions. In this version, the lyrics became more explicitly sexual, and the music was slightly reworked. Many cover artists mix lyrics from both versions, and occasionally make other changes (such as Rufus Wainwright singing "holy dark" and Allison Crowe singing "Holy Ghost" rather than "holy dove"). In the section of the lyrics "the fourth, the fifth, the minor fall, the major lift", the chords move as described in the lyrics. In C major, for example, the chords would move as follows: F ('the fourth'), G ('the fifth'), Am (a movement downwards and to a minor chord), F (a movement upwards, and to a major chord). As well as recording a cover of the original version, in February 2007 Alistair Griffin rewrote the lyrics to reference the soccer player Mark Viduka. Leonard Cohen gave permission for this to be released as a charity download in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Lincoln Brewster released a rewritten and retitled version, "Another Hallelujah" on its album "All to You" in August, 2005. Welsh rock-outfit Lostprophets uses the song's sentence "I've seen this room and I've walked this floor" in their track "Can't Catch Tomorrow (Good Shoes Won't Save You This Time)" on their 2006 album Liberation Transmission. It is not clear if this use is coincidental or not. Author: rocketsforever Keywords: Strathroy United Church Wilfred Jury Public School Leonard Cohen Hallelujah Added: June 10, 2008

The Wilfred Jury Boys Choir with guest solist Mark Flear perform "You Raise Me Up" under the direction of Rosemary Bannerman on piano as part of the Sunday service at Strathroy United Church on June 8, 2008. "You Raise Me Up" is a popular song in the inspirational mold. The music was written by Secret Garden's Rolf Løvland; the lyrics by Brendan Graham. The song has now been covered more than 125 times. The song was originally written as an instrumental piece and entitled "Silent Story". Løvland approached Irish novelist and songwriter Brendan Graham to write the lyrics to his melody after reading Graham's novels[2]. It was originally released on the 2001 Secret Garden album "Once in a Red Moon", with the vocals sung by Irish singer Brian Kennedy, and sold well in both Ireland and Norway. The song was used for commemorations of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks despite not having been released in America yet. The song was subsequently recorded by Daniel O'Donnell in 2003 and was a hit throughout Ireland and the UK. Later in 2003, David Foster decided to produce the song. He chose the up and coming Josh Groban to record the song, which proved very popular in the US. His version made it to the top of the Billboard AC Charts and remained there for 6 weeks. Josh Groban also performed it at Super Bowl XXXVIII, in a special NASA commemoration for the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. A special surprise performance by Groban, for Oprah Winfrey's 50th birthday, also gave "You Raise Me Up" massive international prominence. The Josh Groban recording also was nominated for a 2005 Grammy award. Brian Kennedy re-released the single after performing it at legendary Northern Irish football player George Best's funeral, the song again climbing the UK Charts to No. 4 in January 2006 (named "George Best - A Tribute"). Move him into the sun - Gently its touch awoke him once, At home, whispering of fields unsown. Always it woke him, even in France, Until this morning and this snow. If anything might rouse him now The kind old sun will know. Think how it wakes the seeds, - Woke, once, the clays of a cold star. Are limbs, so dear-achieved, are sides, Full-nerved, - still warm, - too hard to stir? Was it for this the clay grew tall? - O what made fatuous sunbeams toil To break earth's sleep at all? April 04, 2008

Here is a virtual movie of Robert Laurence Binyon (August 10, 1869 at Lancaster -- March 10, 1943 at Reading, Berkshire)who was an English poet, dramatist and art scholar.reading His most famous work "For the Fallen" which is well known for being used in Remembrance Sunday services. Kind Regards Jim Clark All rights are reserved on this video recording copyright Jim Clark 2008 With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children, England mourns for her dead across the sea. Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free. Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres. There is a music in the midst of desolation And a glory that shines upon our tears. They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncountered: They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. They mingle not with their laughing comrades again; They sit no more at familiar tables at home; They have no lot in our labour of the day-time; They sleep beyond England's foam. But where our desires are and our hopes profound, Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight, To the innermost heart of their own land they are known As the stars are known to the Night; As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust, Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain; As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness, To the end, to the end they remain.
