James Kalm makes his way to the Thursday night power-opening of Chuck Close. These massive portraits are Post-Modern icons that meld ideas about photography, abstraction and celebrity worship into a heady m lange of color line and inside the art world politics. Recent paintings include the artist s daughters and the former president Bill Clinton. Larger black and white wool tapestries reproduce examples of the artist s photo portraits, and present huge images that are as rich in velvety texture and detail as they are in historical precedent (being produced in Belgium using 400 year old techniques).

James Kalm documents the art world s tremendous outpouring of support for the Brooklyn Rail. Providing a counterbalance to the commercially driven blandness of much current art criticism, the Rail provides a unique voice, publishing works by today s most recognized writers. James Kalm is privileged to bring viewers this report on the opening night of Thomas Nozkowski s debut exhibition at PaceWildenstein Gallery. Because of his contrarian approach to abstraction, and his lone stance challenging many of the accepted modes of New York painting, Nozkowski has battled the consensus of the tastemakers . With over three decades of production that has earned him the loyalty of an underground following, the mainstream has caught up.
