Cinematical Seven: The Orson Welles Primer

This week Richard Linklater's Me and Orson Welles is finally making its way to the big screen. It's not a big buzzed-about film, but it is, indeed, one worthy of your time. The movie offers a peek at Efron's possible future (which the abysmal 17 Again completely failed to do), a delightful look into creating art in the '30s, and it recreates the nuances of theater on the big screen. And hey, it's a Linklater film, which seems to be painfully rare these days. But none of those reasons are why I urge you to see it. It all rests on the shoulders of actor Christian McKay, who plays Orson Welles. I missed the film at TIFF, and spent the next year listening to raves over McKay's performance before I finally got the chance to make it to a screening. Even with the rave reviews and raised expectations, it was quite easy to get mesmerized by McKay, who not only bears an uncanny resemblance to the iconic actor and filmmaker, but also adeptly embodies the man's larger-than-life ways. To get the full experience, you must be familiar with Welles, and if you're not, well, good lord, now's the time to change that. What follows are some of Welles' essential work, as well as glimpses into the man's real life so you can see just how good McKay's performance is.Filed under: Fandom, Cinematical Seven, ListsContinue reading Cinematical Seven: The Orson Welles Primer Permalink | Email this | Comments

I've been getting a lot of negative feedback about the background music being too loud and all I can say is that, well, nobody's perfect . So because this is one of my most viewed videos I decided to take the liberty to make changes. Hopefully this is the final upload I'll have to make with this video, and if you like it please leave a comment. Once this video starts picking up a lot of views, I'll get rid of the other ones. Thanks for your support and advice! Enjoy! This is a musical montage I put together based on AFI's 100 Years 100 Movies Quotes. This is the full version of these montages: AFI's 100 Movie Quotes Part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRETLKoBceM and AFI's 100 Movie Quotes Part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akryJKf-nHU What a dump quote, which I was missing in both montages. This gave me an excuse to re-upload both videos as one montage and also to take advantage of youtube's widescreen player. Here are the films used in the order they are shown. THE THIRTEEN CHAIRS (1969) 98 minutes -- Starring Orson Welles, Sharon Tate, and Terry Thomas. Music by Stelvio Cipriani. Directed by Nicolas Cessnar. Produced by Edward J. Pope. PLOT: Two unlikely partners careen through Europe in a desperate search for 13 antique chairs that contain a fortune in precious jewels. In a race against time, the partners meet a host of bizarre characters in many beautiful European settings. INFO: Thirteen Chairs is Sharon Tate's last movie; it was filmed the same year of her death. In many scenes she is noticeably pregnant. Tate and her unborn son would die on 9 August 1969 in her Los Angeles home at the hands of Charles Manson's Family. Roman Polanski, Tate's husband, was working in Europe at the same time Tate was filming Thirteen Chairs. He had pleaded with Tate to stay in Europe and have the baby there since she was 8 months pregnant when her work on Thirteen Chairs ended. Ironically, Tate insisted on returning to the United States so that she could have the baby in the safety and security of home. Although a bit heavy-handed at times, the Bacharach-inspired soundtrack helps define the various moods throughout the film. In several countries the movie was released under the title 12 + 1.
