Video: Cleaning Up Your Garden
from KXMC CBS Bismarck North October 15, 2008
Shorter days and cooler nights are a few signals your garden is probably done for the year. Reporter Sarah Gustin explains how to put your garden to bed the right way. The growing season is over. (Tom Kalb / NDSU Horticulturist) Well the frost this week have just just caused a alot of death and distruction in our gardens and now is a good time to clean-up the garden so we can get off to a head start next spring. But what you do with your garden now could play a part in next year's production. (Tom Kalb / NDSU Horticulturist) And the best thing to do is add an inch of composite or rotten manure into the garden. Best thing. Because that will condition the soil, no matter the type of soil you have it will benefit from the compost or manure. (Sarah Gustin / KX News) The recent frosts aren't the only reason for the brown tinge to these leaves. Kalb says if you don't take care of your disease problem this year, it's probably going to be back next year. (Tom Kalb / NDSU Horticulturist) Now on the other hand if the plants are pretty healthy before the frost you can work them back into the garden. That will add some rich, what we call organic matter into the soil. So you like shred them up and then work them into the garden with a shovel or rotto tiller. While the frost may have killed off our vine crops such as cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers. Other produce like cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage don't mind the cold. (Tom Kalb / Horticulturist) A frost sweetens them and so they become a milder tasting vegetable after the frost, so we recommend to wait until after you have a mild frost. Kalb also says now is the best time to be harvesting your root crops like beets and carrots. In Bismarck, Reporting for KX news, I am Sarah Gustin. Any harvested produce should be stored in a cool, dry place.
