Ruby on Rails - Creating a weblog in 15 minutes
from Dailymotion - channel tech & science July 18, 2008
Creating a weblog in 15 minutes In 15 minutes, we go from scratch to complete weblog engine: with comments and an administrative interface. But since the actual application only took 58 lines to complete, we also have time left over to do unit testing, examine the logs, and play around with the domain model. Radiohead’s “House of Cards” video data published under Creative Commons license
from Creative Commons » CC News July 14, 2008
Today, Radiohead released a video for its song House of Cards. Directed by James Frost, it s a beautiful, eerie clip, made with - wait for it - lasers (!), instead of cameras or lights. [T]wo technologies were used to capture 3D images: Geometric Informatics and Velodyne LIDAR. Geometric Informatics scanning systems produce structured light to capture 3D images at close proximity, while a Velodyne Lidar system that uses multiple lasers is used to capture large environments such as landscapes. In this video, 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per minute produced all the exterior scenes. Awesome, you say. But why am I reading about it on the Creative Commons blog? Glad you asked. The animation data used to make the video are licensed to the public under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike license at Google Code. This means you are free to use the data to make your own video projects, as long as you abide by the CC license s conditions. (To be clear, the song and its accompanying video are not under CC license; the data used to make the video are.) Very exciting stuff. We can t wait to see all the interesting ways people use this material.

Iran: Judicial Investigator Publically Accuses Ayatollahs of Corruption
from Global Voices Online » Video June 09, 2008
A member of Iran s Judicial Inquiry and Review Commission, Abbas Palizdar, created a scandal this month by accusing several top clerics and influential members of the Islamic Republic of corruption in a speech a Booali University in Hamadan. He offered details of many illegal business deals and criminal offences, and accused several of Iran s leading political figures, including influential Ayatollahs, such as former president and chairman of the Assembly of Experts, Hashemi Rafsanjani, the Interim Friday Prayer Leader of Tehran, Emami Kashani, and the head of the Imam Reza Shrine Foundation, Ayatollah Vaez Tabbasi, of illegally accumulating hundreds of millions of dollars. Several Iranian bloggers published parts of his speech and shared their opinions on this exceptional event in the Islamic Republic. After the controversial speech, the university s Islamic Society of Students was allegedly shut down. The Mano Shoma blog recounts [fa] that Abbas Palizdar named several “corrupt influential personalities” in Hamadan: Ayatollah Emami Kashani came and said he wants to register an institution for handicapped people because he has a handicapped child, and he wants his own child be in this institution. Then he came back and said he needs financial support for this institute, and he wants a stone mine in the Fars province. It is the best mine in the world. Then he came and said that mine is not enough, and he took another one in Zanjan. At present he has four different mines supporting his institute for disabled people. There were many more examples. Palizar described how Ayatollah Yazdi, the former head of the Judiciary was allowed to purchase the Dena Tyre factory in order to support a new law faculty for women in Qom. The factory was valued at 600 million dollars, but he was allowed to acquire it for only 10 million dollars. The cleric then said he could only pay 20 per cent in cash, and proceeded to sell the factory on the Iranian stock market at a massive profit. Azarmehr links to a video of Abbas Palizdar delivering the speech on the Internet Archive and translates the key points to English: During the question time, Palizdar is asked why he has not talked about the corruption by the Rafsnjani clan, is it because he fears the power of Rafsanjanis? Palizar replies that there is so much abuse of power by Rafsnajanis that he would need an entire meeting dedicated to this subject According to Palizdar, Ayatollah Rafsanjani has major financial interests in an oil company in Canada, and also the touristic island, Kish. He also said there is video evidence of Rafsanjani s son, Mehdi, sexually exploiting his female employees. Dilemma of the Islamic Republic Abdollah Shabazi an Islamist historian says [fa] that owners of the revolution , according to the definition of the Islamic Republic leadership, face a dilemma between either: the status quo, continuing the present situation and making Iran a second Pakistan, or renewing the Islamic Republic. There is no third option. The choice is either to accept institutionalised corruption, or fight against it to realise the goals of late Ayathollah Khomeini, the leader of the Islamic Revolution. Why now? Mahameh Khobim wonders [fa] about the timing of such a surprising revelation. Why? And why now? The blogger speculates that a group of the conservative right must be targeted to be disappeared. Hassan Agha draws parallels [fa] between what is going on in Iran now and at the end of the Shah s regime: inflation, unemployment and these kinds of political revelations.

Each of us in our humble way…
from Creative Commons » CC News May 05, 2008
Ambient sound artist Gurdonark writes beautifully at the (unofficial) ccMixterblog on Virtuosos, Rock Stars and Remix Culture: We all tend to make remixes more than we tend to discuss high-flown concepts but my simple premise is that we should never forget that we are part of a conversation about permissive licensing and its virtue in advancing the cause of music. Only one person can be a Liszt or a Rachmaninoff. But each of us in our humble way can work, through voluntary licensing, to create a creator-safe zone for using samples and pellas to share culture. Our modes may be hip-hop or electronica or rock (or ambient), but the point is the same we advance a sharing economy, and the creative weight of history is with us, not against us. Read the whole post and listen to one of his tracks (Black-eyed Susan from Eerie Exchange Prarie Park licensed under CC BY).

From CC Australia: Following [Mayer and Bettle s] fabulously successful cinematic debut, in which they introduced us all to Creative Commons, the new film provides a bit of an update as to what has been happening in Creative Commons over the last two years, and gives us a bit more information on using the Creative Commons licences. Kuwait: A Ridiculous Mixture of Hail, Rain, Wind and Dust
from Global Voices Online » Video April 11, 2008
Unusual for this time of the year, Kuwait was just hit by a semi-tornado, which included a ridiculous mixture of hail, rain, wind, dust, gusts in the words of blogger Kuwaitism. Equipped with cells phones and digital cameras, the Kuwaiti blogopshere is full of stories reporting the unexpected weather which hit the country. Kuwaitism even puts together this quick video, filmed with his mobile phone, which is available on YouTube: Kuwaitism s post also features a number of photographs, clearly showing snow on the streets, as well as uprooted trees - one of them on the bonnet of a car. He explains the mayhem as follows: There were many many more scenes like that which I couldnt take pictures of! I saw light posts on the ground, I saw scaffolding fallen from buildings onto the roads, I saw huge billboards plucked from the ground … I really hope not many people were hurt, and thank God we have the law against the elections signs on the roads, otherwise it could have been even more disastrous! Rampurple asks if there is a hurricane in Kuwait and says: What just happened? One minute I’m surfing the net with my window open enjoying the breezy air and the next minute am running around the room flooded with water!!! Mark, meanwhile, provides us with a detailed report on what happened. He writes: Although my windows were all closed dust still managed to come into the house and now EVERYTHING has a layer of sand on it. I couldn’t see ANYTHING outside my window. When I first heard the wind I looked outside and I saw a cloud of sand literally sweep into my block like a huge wave, something I’ve only seen in movies. Within second visibility dropped down to like 10cm, I couldn’t see ANYTHING outside. That extremely powerful wind with dust continued for a couple of minutes before I started hearing a banging sound on my window. I stepped back thinking whatever was hitting my window was going to break it but then I noticed it was rain drops. In a few seconds it started raining really strong and the dust cleared up but then I noticed the rain was so powerful and in such large quantity that water started pouring into my apartment like a waterfall from the window sill. I quickly grabbed a ton of towels and started to do what I can to hold back the water. He also set up an email account, calling on readers to send him pictures of the damages, which are now being posted here. Mark posts links videos of the storm here. In keeping with tradition and naming hurricanes after females, Kuwaitism calls the hurricane Sibeecha, while Mark calls it Kuwaitina, following a tip from Susheeh. Frankom (Ar) meanwhile wasn t in the capital Kuwait, in the chalets area, a popular resort. He predicts: صحف الغد ستكون عناوينها كالتالي … تسونامي الكويت أو كاترينا كويتي The headlines of tomorrow s newspapers would read: The Kuwaiti Tsunami or The Kuwaiti Katrina According to AFP, one man was killed and several injured when the gale-force storm lashed the Emirate.

Bangladesh: Fighting the cycle of poverty
from Global Voices Online » Video March 17, 2008
In this week s roundup we will highlight some of the discussions happening in the Bangladeshi Blogosphere on the issues of Poverty, LGBT and Travel . Poverty: Bangladesh is a developing country and the main problem of this country is overpopulation. It has one of the highest population density among the worlds big countries. Although the reduction in the growth of population to 1.7 percent (3% in the 70s) is a miracle its vast rural population with their simple style of living are dropping its per capita income average to make it a poor country. It is almost self-sufficient in food for its population of 140 million (over 90%) if no natural calamity strikes in a year. We look at the Blogosphere to see how the country is fighting to get out of the cycle of poverty. Shawn Ahmed of The Uncultured Project posts an investigative video report on the young hardworking Poor of Rural Bangladesh. He comments: If poverty could be eliminated solely by the hard work and determination of the poor, then third world poverty would have ended a long time ago. The poor in the developing world are some of the hardest working people on the planet .I once again point out something I learned long ago: the poor aren’t lazy. Here is the video produced by Shawn (used under creative commons license): Bangladesh s fight back to reduce poverty is largely contributed by its clothing industries which flourished from the late eighties. Lower income class women used to have no options other than working as housemaids for food, lodging and a small amount of money, now work in thousand of garments and other factories. And the proliferation of micro-credit introduced by the Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus targeted women to help them get out of poverty. And this had impacted a great deal in empowering women in a predominantly Muslim society. Dr. Kathryn Ward of Bideshi Blue is a co-founder of Nari Jibon project, a provider of alternative skills for women, which has done commendable job in providing low cost classes in Bangla, tailoring, English, and computers. Kathy informs: Many of our students have gone on to develop their own businesses, improve their salaries from literacy in Bangla and skills, jobs in offices and NGOs, and pursue their higher education with computer and improved skills in English and Bangla speaking, writing, and reading. Although there are many such organization working in Bangladesh Nari Jibon has done a bit more. With a Rising Voices grant it has brought working class women of Dhaka towards blogging who are telling the world the stories their lives, struggles and joys. Listen to Kathy discussing the benefits of blogging for Bangladeshi Women in a radio interview. Gay Community From Drishtipat blog we are pointed to an article published in Himal South Asian magazine which sheds a light into the Bangladeshi gay community. As homosexuality is still a taboo in the society people are using the internet to form a virtual community and meeting place of the gay-identified men in Bangladesh. It was in late 2002 that the first online gay group for Bangladeshis – a Yahoo group called BOB, for Boys Only Bangladesh – was started by a handful of educated men. Tired of looking for other gay men in public places such as the Ramna Park hangout, they were hoping to build friendship ties online so as to begin talking about their sexuality comfortably. Since BOB is the biggest congregation of gay-identified men in Bangladesh, it has since come to be seen as something of a barometer of the gay community in the country. As such, BOB helps to gauge the political aspirations of this group – and, more recently, has provided a window into how the past year of emergency rule has affected the gay community of Bangladesh. Travel: Joybangla.info, a travel blog from Bangladesh informs: After many delays, interruptions, disagreements and a fence, the train ride between Kolkata and Dhaka will begin running again on 14 April. Bodda in Scattered Words Blog had taken a new year s resolution that he will visit places in Bangladesh and blog about it. The blogger visits Kushtia, which is famous for the famous chalan bil , the largest wetland of the country and Lalon, the singing mystic of Bengal and Rabindranath Tagore, the Bengali Nobel Laureate. Raza Rumi has more on Lalon Fakir. Ahmed Sharif writes a photo essay in his PhotoBlog Desher Chobi after his visit to Lawachara Rain Forest Sreemangal.

Video HUB: Protecting women activists' rights around the world
from Global Voices - Human Rights Video March 12, 2008
Witness The HUB Beta brings us three videos recorded at the Human Rights for Women; Human Rights for All event, where 3 strong women who defend other women´s rights speak about the International Campaign on Women Human Rights Defenders. From the campaign s contextualization website: The International Campaign on Women Human Rights Defenders is an international initiative for the recognition and protection of women who are activists advocating for the realization of all human rights for all. The campaign asserts that women fighting for human rights and particularly focusing on women s human rights face specific violations in the course of their work because of their sex and gender. In addition, the Campaign focuses on the situation of human rights activists defending women’s rights and in particular calls attention to the violations experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other rights activists on grounds of their sex and gender identities. The identities of these actors as well as the nature of the rights they strive to uphold are both factors that make them the focus of the Campaign. There are currently 3 videos on The Hub, and they have been chosen as the Editor´s picks: Sunila Abeyesekera of INFORM in Sri Lanka talking about the campaign and how the implementation of gender specific strategies for human rights work is necessary,Lydia Alpizar from AWID who talks about why what she calls unsexy topics such as financing are vital for gender equality matters: without resources there is no implementation of hard-won political commitment to uphold women s human rights and Aisha Shaheed from the Global Campaign to Stop Killing and Stoning, explaining why crimes against women based on tradition or religion should be stopped. Following, the 3 videos on strong women who are striving to protect the rights of other women, as uploaded by Violeta Krasnic. So what is the Hub? It´s a website where anyone can post videos related to human rights, so that they get a wider audience that is interested in the subject, instead of having to dig through regular video uploading websites to find the content they want. It´s a way to get human rights content directly to those who are interested in seeing it. The next is a 60 promotional video explaining what the Hub does, and how to participate.

Africa: Vloggers, Bloggers and Movies
from Global Voices Online » Video March 05, 2008
A few glimpses of Africa through citizen media videos. From BoB winners, to storytellers, documentaries on artists, Nigeria´s Nollywood movie industry and more. Usnico´s other video stories are interesting and well done: one video tells the plight of African flood refugees, and another, well, it´s title tells it all: Fighting leaves Chad in Gruesome State. On LookingGlassLand, a varied sample of videos selected from the Internet Movie Archives can be found, including a Cameroonian storyteller at Yaoundé [FR], a promotional video for a Ugandan beauty pageant contestant [EN], and Italian photographer Carla Cinelli tells of her experience photographing woman in Burkina Faso [IT]. Nigerian VCDs at kwakoe by Paul Keller. In many African countries, there are thriving movie industries. Such is the case with Nollywood, the Nigerian film industry. Kulture Klash International presents the following video of the Nigerian Film industry organization convention, where US distribution of Nollywood films is discussed. If you are interested in knowing more about Nollywood and its videos, journeymanpictures has a documentary from 2005 where the unique and low-budget movie-making process is explained. YouTube user rippleat uploaded the following 2 part documentary on artist Issa Nyaphaga from Cameroon. The film by Chris Hill lets the artist himself tell the story of how he learned to paint in a rural village in the traditional style, how he became a political cartoonist and was prosecuted for ignoring censors and then how he found asylum in France, where he later spoke in front of the French parliament for the 50th anniversary of the Geneva Convention on behalf of refugees.

This hit the net last week, but it took a little while for us to go through our various channels to figure out what was going on (i.e. if only I had taken German in high school). CC-evangelist Cory Doctorow was recently interviewed on the German show Metropolis (a product of the German-French network Arte) in which they chat about his novel Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom (or Backup, as it is titled Germany) as well as online freedom and surveillance, and science fiction . The whole thing is CC licensed, so it is available for reuse if you so desire. UPDATE: Cory s second novel, Eastern Standard Tribe, has been published in German by Heyne (under the title Upload) with the text released under a CC BY-NC-SA license. Cory also recently did an interview about CC licensing and science fiction with the German net-show WatchBerlin.
