The workshop Challenge the Book evolved around interactive paper; paper that triggers media like sound, images or video. What new possibilities could this offer for print media? For example, how could you visualize a text or make it audible? Or how could you use hyperlinks in a page to make notes or to visualize your associations with the text?Students were to use an existing book or a book designed by themselves from scratch, using interactive paper. The assignment required an initial analysis of the book and its inherent properties, such as page numbers, the index, the chapters or its text.aim The aim of this workshop was to experiment with new forms of paper, to redesign the book from a classic analog medium into an interactive one. design questions How to combine the value of the book in relation to digital information (text)? How could touch contribute to you design? How to work with and integrate technical aesthetics of the wires and patches? How to deal with the physical design possibilities of paper, such as folding, bending, scratching, rolling up etc.?technical The interactive paper is based on a switch. Archived video of the presentation by Simon Pummell during the CrossLab LunchEvent of 25 march 2009. Simon Pummell: filmmaker and animator: new ways of storytelling in cinema. Simon Pummell made over a dozen movies for British TV. For Channel 4 he made his first movie for cinema in 2004, Body Song (soundtrack: Jonny Greenwood, Radiohead). An insolluble part of this project is the website that goes with the same name. For 'Body Song' he used 'footage' to visualize the cycle of life. Pummell won a number of prestigious awards with it. During this lunchevent Simon Pummel presents his cross media projects, in which ancient animation techniques, stop motion, high tech computer generated animation and 'live action' go hand in hand. At this moment Pummell, as course director, is preparing the WdKA's new MA study: '4D: Lense Based Media' that will start in september 2009.
