S.A.S. poogt -en slaagt in - tv-optreden
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) April 07, 2008

vPro: Encryption at the Hardware Level
from PodTech.net: Technology and Entertainment Video Network December 29, 2007
There's a revolution afoot in the computer industry that's not so sci-fi. It's more in line with the notion of "heavy lifting" and "blocking and tackling." Corporate networks are benefiting from software at the chip level below the operating system. Intel has been providing the software building blocks for greater functionality in the hardware in vPro and CentrinoPro. The updates to the technologies continue in 2008 with "Danbury," which performs core encryption in hardware. PodTech's Jason Lopez interviewed Intel's Steve Grobman, director of business client architecture.Tags: Corporate networks, vPro, CentrinoPro, Danbury, core encryption, Steve Grobman

Live from IDF: Gelsinger Puts Nehalem and Virtualization on Display
from PodTech.net: Technology and Entertainment Video Network September 18, 2007
In his keynote today at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, Patrick Gelsinger, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Digital Enterprise Group, gave a broad update on Intel's efforts this year. In this podcast, Gelsinger covers what he calls the company's "relentless pursuit of Moore's Law," spotlighting Nehalem (that's the codename for "the first-ever Intel 45 nanometer High-k metal gate next-generation microarchitecture dual processor server," according to company statements). He also revealed Intel's plans to build on the latest roll-out of Intel vPro processor technology with a 2008 release called "McCreary," which will include new halogen and lead-free 45nm dual and quad-core processors. Encryption and decryption technology is addressed with Danbury technology (one reaction to which can be found here). Underscoring the current momentum around virtualization, Gelsinger was joined onstage at one point by John Fowler, executive vice president of Sun Microsystems. A demonstration of Intel Virtualization Technology and Intel Trusted Execution Technology shed some light on how Intel will provide protection for virtual environments in the workstations and desktop PCs of the future. Check out Pat Gelsinger's blog for more thoughts from (and after) IDF. IDF Exclusive: Intel CIO John "JJ" Johnson
from PodTech.net: Technology and Entertainment Video Network September 18, 2007
Live, from the "Upload Lounge" at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, Intel Vice President and CIO John "JJ" Johnson spoke with PodTech for this podcast about some of the hot topics being talked about at this year's Fall IDF. Johnson talks about the many ways in which Intel's Enterprise Capability Framework helps enterprise data networks keep up with the demands associated with managing emerging technologies, including social media like IM, blogs and wikis as well as the newest generation of smart phones. A big part of the challenge facing the enterprise involves providing the requisite security without limiting capability. For the enterprise, Johnson highlights virtualization (a hot topic at the end of Day 1) and the value of Intel's vPro -- including advantages like the ability to fix or reboot a crashed machine in the network, or to analyze network machines remotely. It all points in one direction -- increased mobility brings increased demands, which together create what Johnson sees as the most interesting innovation in the last ten years. Check out Intel's IT Community. Tags: Intel Developer Forum, John "JJ" Johnson, IDF, data networks, social media, smart phones, virtualization, vPro

Intel vPro 2007: better remote administration, security and virtualisation
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) August 29, 2007
Last Friday, Intel hosted a launch event at San Francisco's Palace Hotel for the upgrade of its vPro technologies (virtualisation, security and remote administration): a platform for business desktop PCs that includes a CPU, a chipset, a firmware, and a gigabit network interface (NIC). The first iteration of vPro launched last Fall and already enabled IT administrator to remotely managed PCs, even when turned off, and install patches/bug fixes, etc. With vPro 2007, Intel added: - the Trusted eXecution Technology (TXT) that insures the integrity of virtual machine monitors e.g. VMWare, Parallels, XenSource...; - improved system defense filters that now has a firewall type of functionality (deep packet inspection, screening for malicious behaviour...) for the integrated Gigabit NIC; - a capability to allow a PC that does not have its OS active, because it's turned off, to securely come on to an IEEE 802.1x or a Cisco NAC network; - support for DASH and WS-Man management standards; - virtualisation for Directed I/O which prevents unauthorised access to the hardware. But here's the catch. If you are running a Virtual Appliance on a vPro system, you will not be able to run another virtual machine monitor (VMM)/hypervisor from VMWare, Parallels, XenSource/Citrix or any others. And that is because you can only run *one* VMM at a time on a PC. So you will have to choose between running the lightweight VMM that comes with the Virtual Appliance (from Lenovo, Symantec...) and only traps network traffic or a multi-purpose one. And that for me is an serious limitation because I want to be able to have both: a VMM to load several OSes/partitions on my PC and have the monitoring/security features of a Virtual Appliance. "There's technology to allow multiple virtual appliances [...] but that's a problem I need to solve later", said Mike Ferron-Jones, an Intel marketing director (pictured). Now that could be easily solved if I use VMWare's virtual appliances that would work on VMWare's hypervisor. But then, wouldn't that make Intel's virtual appliance, well... caduc? So why is this important and why should you care? Well because the choice of a hypervisor is now so crucial due to the lack of interopability of virtual machine vendors (that might change but slowly)... So once you choose one VM vendor for all your PCs, you're locked in... no wonder VMWare's shares are going through the roof... it's becoming another Microsoft!!!!!!

Intel vPro: Make the Platform More Responsive
from PodTech.net: Technology and Entertainment Video Network August 27, 2007
In technology development, most researcher "to-do lists" do not have an item that says something like: "invent society-changing technology." Mostly, to-do lists contain step-by-step improvements. But we are reminded that the step-by-step can be as important as any monumental leap. Intel says its latest chip release, code-named "Weybridge," reduces costs, reduces energy use, and improves security. Rob Crooke, Intel's general manager of the Business Client Group, says it's all about constantly making the vPro platform more responsive. In this podcast, PodTech's Jason Lopez collects comments from Intel partners at the "Weybridge" announcement in San Francisco. Tags: Intel, Weybridge, Rob Crooke, vPro

Intel Launches social media experience Open Port
from PodTech.net: Technology and Entertainment Video Network August 24, 2007
"Corporate Websites are losing a bit of relevance," says Bob Duffy, Intel's online community strategist. "Open Port is Intel's first public online community targeted at the IT tech enthusiast audience; it's a central destination for Social Media." Because of the Web every company is suddenly a media outlet. Intel says it has positioned itself to communicate directly with the users of its technology, especially the IT administrators and professionals who watch over networks and fleets of PCs. Open Port is divided into zones, each focused on different IT themes. The vPro Expert Center, managed by Josh Hilliker, is expected to address issues around integration and adoption of Intel's Pro products. IT@Intel will be a destination where Intel's own IT pros share experiences with deploying technologies within the world's largest chip maker. "(IT@Intel) is an opportunity for us to share some of the hurdles that we've gone over," says Intel Global Web Program Manager Laurie Buczek.
