Aero-TV: Examining A New Market -- VLJs In Latin America

Aero-TV: Examining A New Market -- VLJs In Latin America

from Aero-TV Network on January 27, 2009
Duration: 384
There IS Life Ahead For VLJs... Well, Some Of Them Anyway In light of the global economic malaise and a significantly anti-aviation sentiment in many parts of the world (especially if you listen to Congress or read the NY Post...), one has to wonder where tomorrow's aviation business is going to come from... and doubly so for the slowly maturing VLJ market. ANN and Aero-TV were the principal media partner for MIU Events' Very Light Jets - Latin America and the Caribbean conference last fall, and spent quite a bit of quality time with a number of industry experts discussing the current market for VLJs in Latin America. We learned that there are more business jets and turbo props in Brazil than in any other single country outside the United States and Canada. As a region, Latin America and the Caribbean operate more turbo props than either Europe or Asia. With Very Light Jet (VLJ) manufacturers forecasting more than 60% of their sales outside the US, Latin America and the Caribbean offers an enticing market. With a poor road network and few railways, the Latin American region has long been a place where private aircraft have been an essential tool for business. As the Latin American economies gain momentum and the boom in agriculture generates business in areas far removed from the big industrial centers, demand for aircraft is growing at a phenomenal pace. Conservative estimates predict the market for private jets in the region will grow at 10%pa for the next five years. As the existing fleet of twins and turboprops comes up for renewal or replacement the VLJ is going to look increasingly attractive to owner/operators and owner/pilots. The questions surrounding the future of this market remain considerable ones, indeed... Will the new VLJs now being delivered prove as sturdy and reliable as turbo props and twins and will the VLJ offer the operators the distances needed for this market? Will the necessary aviation infrastructure be in place and will the OEMs have a sufficiently expansive servicing capability for this established but rugged market? We sat down with three of the top minds on the topic, and learned quite a bit... As an expert on very light jets and next generation air taxis with the first business Ph.D. dissertation worldwide on the subjects, Joe Leader has worked with industry leaders in forming the Air Taxi Association (ATXA) and now serves as its President. With more than a dozen years of executive experience at both entrepreneurial and multi-billion dollar companies, Leader uses the combination of his professional and academic expertise to build bridges across the industry. Edward T. Smith, Senior VP International Affairs, General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA), Smith has the responsibility for GAMA's international aviation policy and regulatory involvement with foreign authorities and also maintains GAMA's relationship with the Department of Commerce, Department of State and the FAA's International Office. Smith joined GAMA after a distinguished 25-year career with the United States Department of State where he most recently was Director, Office of Aviation Negotiations, leading several Open Skies negitiations. Previously Mr. Smith was Deputy Director, Office of Caribbean Affairs and Director, General Economic Policy Unit, U.S. Mission to the European Union where he was involved with aircraft noise legislation and early discussion on the establishment of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Clint E Clouatre, Senior Manager, Marketing, Embraer Executive Jets, based in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Additionally, he has marketing responsibility for the business jet product line in North America. Clouatre joined Embraer in November 2006, following a five-year tenure at Eclipse Aviation as the director of product marketing. Prior to Eclipse, he had similar roles over a 20-year period at Galaxy Aerospace and Gulfstream Aerospace. He was also a flight test engineer on the Gulfstream IV certification program. Clouatre earned a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Masters of Business Administration from Georgia Southern University. He has been a previous speaker at the English Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators in London, England as well as various industry forums in the United States. NOTE: The use of B-Roll of Eclipse Aircraft do not constitute an endorsement of this manufacturer by ANN and/or Aero-TV. While the aircraft may remain viable as a future VLJ offering, ANN and Aero-TV uses these images only for visual support and illustration, and does not condone recent decisions by Eclipse management which may have seriously damaged the investments, deposits and other interests of customers of the original program. Aero-TV Looks At Leading New Markets: VLJ's in Latin American and the Caribbean

Aero-TV Looks At Leading New Markets: VLJ's in Latin American and the Caribbean

from Aero-TV Network on November 12, 2008

Info-Packed Second Annual Latin America/Caribbean VLJ Conference Concludes In Miami Even though the 2008 National Business Aviation Association's annual conference came to an end barely a month ago, that doesn't mean that all BizAv-related events were done for the year. ANN was pleased to aid the VLJ - Latin America and the Caribbean conference in seeking dialogues, answers and discussion on matters concerning VLJ operations in an impressive market segment. Operators and interested customers just completed a gathering (a few hours ago) in Miami intended to allow attendees to brainstorm ways to spur on the very-light jet industry, and the growth of business aviation in general, throughout Latin America. The second annual Very Light Jets - Latin America and the Caribbean conference ran through November 10-11, with the aim to answer fundamental questions about the industry, and to address expectations of segment growth in the region. MIU Events -- organizers of this conference, as well as others promoting aviation events and training seminars -- notes there are more business jets and turboprops in Brazil than in any other single country outside the United States and Canada. As a region, Latin America and the Caribbean also operate more turboprops than either Europe or Asia. "With Very Light Jet (VLJ) manufacturers forecasting more than 60% of their sales outside the US, Latin America and the Caribbean offers an enticing market," organizers note. "With a poor road network and few railways, the Latin American region has long been a place where private aircraft have been an essential tool for business. "As the Latin American economies gain momentum and the boom in agriculture generates business in areas far removed from the big industrial centers, demand for aircraft is growing at a phenomenal pace. Conservative estimates predict the market for private jets in the region will grow at 10%pa for the next five years. As the existing fleet of twins and turboprops comes up for renewal or replacement the VLJ is going to look increasingly attractive to owner/operators and owner/pilots." While it's fair to say the conference aims to promote the use of VLJs throughout the region, organizers aren't casting a blind eye towards the very real concerns about the emerging industry. "Will the new VLJs now being delivered prove as sturdy and reliable as turbo props and twins and will the VLJ offer the operators the distances needed for this market?" MIU asks. "Will the necessary aviation infrastructure be in place and will the OEMs have a sufficiently expansive servicing capability for this established but rugged market?" It's the role of the conference to answer those questions... and to provide a flight path through the various regulations, funding options, FBO, MRO, operating costs and pilot training issues that are likely to have a direct impact on the success of the VLJ in this market. Aero-News was the Senior Media Partner throughout the event, and will be providing our readers, viewers and listeners access to the results of that meeting -- starting right now -- less than 24 hours later, with an overview of this promising gathering and the immense amounts of information shared in but 48 hours in Miami. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks. Powerful Political Duo Sounds Off In Bizjet Land The hits from NBAA2008 just keep on coming and as soon as business heats up a little in these chilly economic times, we're likely to remember them quite fondly (we hope). One of the highlights of this year was the return of veteran political couple Mary Matalin and James Carville. This intriguing pair spoke at NBAA's the Opening General Session , offering their perspectives on this year s election, and marking the couple s second appearance at an NBAA Convention. Matalin, a Republican political pundit who once served on George Herbert Walker Bush s campaign, and who has served as Vice President Dick Cheney s top advisor, entertained the audience with affectionate jabs at her husband, Carville, a Democratic political pundit and former Clinton advisor. Matalin and Carville shared anecdotes about each other, explaining how they reconcile their stark political differences in their married life. Matalin said, "I just don t listen to him I haven t read any of his books, except for my half of the book that we wrote together." Carville stated that while their politics may be different, "Mary is intelligent and passionate," and he prefers to be with an intelligent and passionate person who thinks, rather than not. Both shared their perspectives on this year s presidential race, citing unpredictability and change as the only things that can be certain for the coming month. "The one thing we agree on is that something big is going to happen, but we don t know what it is," said Matalin. Carville and Matalin agreed on the unprecedented pace of events and developments that the world is experiencing overall, magnified by the Information Age. Carville emphasized his certainty that extraneous events would transpire in the next month that could change the shape and outcome of the presidential race. Using an aviation metaphor, Carville said: "I can t tell you to a certainty who s going to win, but we can expect a lot of weather issues between here and landing. Lots of air traffic control delays. It s certainly not going to be a routine flight," he quipped. The Opening General Session was concluded by the official NBAA2008 ribbon-cutting, with the Federal Aviation Administration s Acting Administrator Bobby Sturgell cutting the ribbon to officially open the show to Attendees. Oscar Garcia Expresses Optimism Despite Current Economic Challenges ANN and Aero-TV are pleased to announce that we have agreed to be the principal media partner for MIU Events upcoming roster of aviation events and seminars. MIU Events run aviation events and training seminars, specializing in executive flight infrastructure, business aviation and finance solutions for aviation as a whole. They run a number of events focusing on the development of the Very Light Jet in regional markets and cater their events to the needs of senior managers, charter/air taxi operators, high net worth individuals/entrepreneurs, owner pilots and those who shape the future of the aviation and aerospace industries. MIU Events concentrate on providing hard to access information and the exchange of ideas, knowledge and innovative thinking. As a result of this relationship,. we're having a ball meeting some REALLY interesting and learned people... most recently a fellow by the name of Oscar S. Garcia, of InterFlight Consulting. Oscar has been Chairman and CEO of InterFlight Global Corporation since 1992. Aero-TV: Next-Gen Airplanes Require Next-Gen Training

Aero-TV: Next-Gen Airplanes Require Next-Gen Training

from TVWeek on October 13, 2008
Duration: 593
Just How Will They Train All Those Eclipse Pilots, Anyway? Despite all the growing pains associated with getting the Eclipse program up to speed, one thing continues unabated... Eclipse Pilot training. A visit to the factory flight training facility a few weeks back showed ANN that this was one part of the program that seems ready and able to keep up with the demand, and that Director of Customer Training, Randy Brooks, seems more than optimistic about their efforts. Just last January, Eclipse told us that the FAA had awarded Eclipse's training provider, Higher Power Aviation (HPA), authorization to conduct Eclipse 500 Type Training under HPA's Part 142 Training Certificate. The authorization increases Eclipse's training capacity and enables the company to type rate customers entirely in its certified Level D Full Motion simulators. During the Part 142 certification process, the FAA examined Eclipse's training curriculum and analyzed how Eclipse uses its advanced simulator to train and type rate customer pilots prior to an aircraft delivery. The certification came just two weeks after the FAA certified Eclipse's first flight simulator as a Level D Full Motion device. The first class of customer pilots began their flight training in the Level D simulator within days, with subsequent classes beginning every two weeks. Eclipse now has three Level D Full Motion simulators in operation, which allows the company to train and type rate 60 customers per month. The certification was accomplished through partnerships between Eclipse Aviation and HPA of Dallas, TX; OPINICUS of Lutz, FL; and Flight Simulation Company (FSC) of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Eclipse built a state-of-the-art Flight Training Facility at Double Eagle II Airport on Albuquerque's west side just over a year ago. Eclipse flight skills assessment eval programs and HPA's Part 142 type rating training are conducted in the simulators. Aero-TV Jets Into The 2008 Eclipse E-rrival

Aero-TV Jets Into The 2008 Eclipse E-rrival

from recent posts tagged eclipse - blip.tv (beta) on June 04, 2008
Duration: 461
Fast Company, Fast Jets, Fast Friends The 2008 E-rrival just finished a couple of days ago... but its influence will be felt throughout 'jet-dom' for quite the while. This annual gathering of pilots and owners of the Eclipse 500 pocket-rocket VLJ occurs once a year or so for the community to talk shop, learn the latest news and enjoy the comradery of like minded flyers... but this year was different. Unlike previous years, Eclipse was finally in serious production, as aircraft number 200 saw daylight during this year's festivities. The little dream jet that so many had hoped for, for so long, and through so many travails, was finally a reality... though nonetheless, still, a work in progress. The Eclipse Aviation Customer E-rrival was an exciting weekend -- featuring an address from Eclipse President and CEO Vern Raburn, information sessions about owning, operating, and maintaining the Eclipse 500, a hysterical luncheon speech from Rod Machado, tours of the Eclipse facilities, simulator flights; a golf event, reception and banquet; and family outings to New Mexico attractions. This E-rrival also marked the company's its 10-year anniversary as some 300 customers and guests touched down in Albuquerque for the three-day event, some of them actually arriving in their own Eclipse 500 jets. The event served as the opportunity to headline some major news from Eclipse. Raburn told ANN that he was "thrilled" to have the opportunity to introduce a new aircraft to the Eclipse Aviation family the Eclipse 400 single-engine jet. This is a production version of the Eclipse Concept Jet (ECJ), which was first revealed at EAA AirVenture 2007 and profiled exclusively by Aero-TV. Previous Eclipse customers were the first allowed to place deposits on the 1.35 million dollar Eclipse 400. Public deposits will be accepted starting at EAA AirVenture 2008. With good news came some not so good news... Eclipse raised the price of the Eclipse 500 to $2,150,000. Raburn noted that the increase became necessary for Eclipse to move forward on a financially-sound basis. The reality is that the slope of their production ramp has been slower than they had hoped, and this has impacted their ability to deliver this airplane for the cost originally targeted. While they may have pursued many other alternatives to rectify this situation, they decided that now was the time to take this action to lower their break even point and move the company toward profitability in 2009. By the time the weekend ended, a number of things were certain... that in the Eclipse 400, there was a new jet in town, that the company was on better footing than it had ever been, and that the end appeared to be in sight for those remaining issues needed for Eclipse to complete all the commitments it made for the revolutionary Eclipse 500... the first of a new generation of exciting jet aircraft. AeroTV Flies The D-Jet... In A Simulated Kinda Way

AeroTV Flies The D-Jet... In A Simulated Kinda Way

from Ghettoking on March 27, 2008

Diamond's aggressive new D-Jet program has been aimed primarily at the burgeoning owner-pilot market -- with the hopes that a simple and capable single-engine jet might be more palatable to the upgrading piston and light turbine pilot than the supposedly more complex Eclipse 500 and the Cessna Citation Mustang. With an altitude limit of 25,000 feet, it is Diamond's hope that the aircraft will prove to be safer if the pressurization goes tango-uniform -- and of course, being a single, they expect that in jet-terms, the D-Jet will be a bargain to operate. In November of 2006, Diamond announced that Airline Transport Professionals (ATP) placed the first serious fleet order for 20 D-Jets, with the aim that they will become a major provider of training to D-Jet owners next year. Just a few months ago, Diamond confirmed that the single-engine Williams powered hot-rod will be built near the main plant in London, Ontario -- no doubt encouraged by the Canadian government's investment of nearly 20 million dollars, as well as the additional grant of $11 million from Ontario. The plant investment, alone is expected to expend some $100 million, by the time the project reaches completion. In the meantime, D-Jets are flying up a storm. The first bird took wing on April 18, 2006, and was followed d by public flights at Oshkosh. Since then, a second bird has been added to the flight test program and a third is expected shortly. Certification is expected in the middle of 2009... delayed slightly by the switch to a more powerful variant of the Williams FJ33, called the FJ33-19. Of special note, is Diamond's early development of a very capable D-Jet flight simulator, built with pretty much the same font end as a real D-Jet. Though a separate division builds the Diamond Flight sims, the devices are already getting quite a solid rep for their realism, capabilities and utility. Come along as ANN's Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell, takes a (simulated) flight in the D-Jet and gets a feel for Diamond's hottest new set of wings!
