There is no icon of Romanian history of greater national esteem than Mihai Viteazul. His reign was short, consisting only of 7 years, but in those seven years he managed to do what emperors couldn't in 50! Fighting the Ottomans at the peak of their power, he drove them all the way back past Adrianople, inflicted one of the most crushing defeats the Ottomans had seen in the 16th century, unified the Romanian principalities, and was arguably the last crusader of European history. His deeds were so great and numerous that the title of "il Vallacco" would have one and only one meaning for over half a century after his death. He had started out as a man who needed to buy his own throne, and ended as a man recieving tribute from two emperors, with three principalities under his reign, and whose name was on the lips of everyone in the Christian world. The Greeks even took him to be the second coming of the Byzantine emperors, and were certain that he would have conquered Constantinople. A hero who is greatly undervalued today outside Romania, this video is intended as an accessible but in-depth guide to the man's life and achievements. Please, enjoy!
