Balsamic vinegarette enhances a salad Since vinegar is high in acetic acid it can increase the body s absorption of important minerals, including calcium, from the foods we eat. By: Natasha Morgan Over the years there have been claims that vinegar can cure a variety of health problems. Apple cider vinegar in particular has received much attention where proponents believe it to be packed with vitamins and minerals. However, scientific studies have clearly shown that vinegar contains only minute amounts of these nutrients and not sufficient to have an impact on your health. Recently, new focus has been placed on vinegar and how it interacts with your digestive system. The millions of people suffering from two of the most common diseases stand to benefit a great deal from this research. More studies need to be conducted but doctors and nutritionists agree that consuming a small amount of vinegar with your meal can have healthy benefits. Osteoporosis Getting sufficient calcium in our diet and having our bodies absorb enough to benefit our bones can be challenging. Since vinegar is high in acetic acid it can increase the body s absorption of important minerals, including calcium, from the foods we eat. Type 2 Diabetes and Prediabetes Carbohydrates provide the glucose required by our cells to produce energy. Insulin, a hormone created by our pancreas, helps with the absorption of the glucose into our cells. If these cells become insulin resistant, the sugar from food begins to build up in the blood. More and more insulin is then released resulting in insulin build up in the blood as well. Vinegar seems to slow down the digestive enzymes’ process of breaking down carbohydrates into sugar. The glucose can be absorbed at a slower rate preventing a sugar build-up in the bloodstream. Less insulin is released as the flow is better regulated. Suggestions for Use of Vinegar * Use vinegar based dressing for salads and coleslaw * Flavor fish and chips with malt vinegar instead of ketchup * Adding a little vinegar near the end of cooking a dish with beans will allow you to cut down on salt * Marinating tougher cuts of meat in balsamic vinegar and olive oil will add flavour and tenderizes the meat * Vegetables marinated in wine vinegar and olive oil make a tasty snack or appetizer * Grilling or oven roasting vegetables that have been marinated in vinegar and olive make a delicious accompaniment to any meal *Rinsing fruit and vegetables in a vinegar and water combo can help rid harmful bacteria and pesticides Note: This information is solely for informational purposes.
