Marc Powell: Community Building Through Food HackingMarc Powell: Community Building Through Food Hacking
from Ryan Is Hungry
July 13, 2007

QuickTime | Flash | iPod Marc Powell is an anarchist, hacker chef who opens his kitchen up to strangers and friends every Thursday to cook up some amazing, hacked food creations. Attending a food hacking supper club is a mind expanding experience that teaches folks not to be afraid of experimenting with your cuisine. You can t cook wrong if you have the right friends to help you out! During this particular five course meal, we had, among many things, the most amazing savory mushroom soup, fava bean soufflé, candied bacon wrapped scallops and a citrus meringue your grandma would have been proud of. The synchronicity of friends- old and new, of food knowledge- a lot or a little, made this one of the most unique food and friendship building experiences we ve ever had. Marc fully believes that sharing knowledge through experimentation and cooking truly is revolutionary social networking. We would have to agree. Thanks Marc! The Gift Economy: Really Really Free Market SFThe Gift Economy: Really Really Free Market SF
from Ryan Is Hungry
July 11, 2007

QuickTime | Flash | iPod A beautiful day in the park, a fresh homemade meal, some free clothes and books- what could be better? The Really Really Free Market, as opposed to the Not-So-Free Free Market, breaks down the myth of scarcity and encourages us to take advantage of the abundance all around us. Kirsten Brydum, RRFM organizer, gave us the low down on how great it feels to get rid of your stuff, share knowledge and maybe find that odd item you ve been searching for. This is not a barter situation, where you re still weighing your stuff against what you think it could be worth in dollars. This is about giving and receiving through a gift economy which encourages sharing without the expectation of payment. The Really Really Free Market is like hanging out on Freecycle or Craigslist Free Listings, except you re breathing fresh air and seeing people f2f (face to face) instead of p2p (peer to peer)! Imagine that! Check out the Wikipedia entry on The Really Really Free Market to find one in your area, or start your own! All you need are some friends, some stuff or some knowledge to share! Real Goods: We Took a Workshop at The Solar Living InstituteReal Goods: We Took a Workshop at The Solar Living Institute

July 06, 2007

Flash | QuickTime | iPod The Solar Living Institute, home of Real Goods (one of the first Green Catalogs), is like a big, green playground. The 12 acre plot was developed as a demonstration site for renewable and clean technologies like solar and wind power, green building and permaculture. We were excited to be able to spend some time on the campus while participating in a workshop on how to build an electric vehicle. Although the workshop turned out to be a wee bit overwhelming, we felt we got a pretty good primer into the world of electric vehicles. That said, we encourage y all to take a workshop or class on some of these green ideas. Meeting people and gathering resources for getting started on this stuff is a good motivator for really making change. Runtime- 4:25 Other DIY Green Videos:

Cooking Green: Cast Iron Will Rock Your WorldCooking Green: Cast Iron Will Rock Your World

Flash | QuickTime | iPod Have you ever cooked with a non-stick skillet and had the non-stick surface flake off after a few months? That super slick surface is made up of many harmful chemicals that should absolutely not be eaten! What s the alternative to cheap-o, toxic frying pans? Your grandma s grandma had the secret in her kitchen- Cast Iron! You might be thinking Hey isn t cast iron archaic cookware from the pioneer days? . Well, yeah, but they had the right idea, cook with heavily oiled metal and never have nasty non-stick chemicals peeling off into your food. Cast iron cookware has been used for generations because it literally lasts that long! It s also fully recyclable since it s one big hunk of iron which can be melted down by a scrap yard. You can nab a high quality cast iron skillet for under $20 and it will probably have at least a 10 year warranty. What other frying pan can top that? Flash | QuickTime | iPod San Francisco s Department of the Environment is leading the initiative to fully redesign Treasure Island- a 400 acre human made island in the San Francisco bay. Originally built for The World s Fair in 1939, it s been used as a movie studio, a naval base and now for residential housing. By 2020, the city plans to have this little plot of land revamped and functioning as green as possible. Jennifer Kass, from the Dept of the Environment, explains the city s process of planning holistically with all aspects of urban living in mind. Treasure Island could possibly inspire future models of sustainability because of its unique geographic challenges. From transportation to green open spaces to building and construction to where you get your groceries- if it can happen self sufficiently on a 400 acre island, maybe it can happen anywhere. June 16, 2007

Can you tell that we re into our worm bin? As you saw in our last worm bin update, our bin had been getting a little sludgy and unproductive. Jay went online and found a source to buy red wigglers for cheap so we could bump up the composting production of our bin. Keeping an eye (and nose) on your bin will help you get a feel for how things are going in your worms world. Since our first vermicompost video with Barb Finnin, we ve been getting lots of feedback from old friends and new about how they re making their bins happen! Like Rachel from Chicago, who sent us this picture of her new bin. Thanks Rachel! Keep up the composting! Siel aka Green LA Girl, has been blogging about her personal experiences with green since 2005. Using her blog as a journal, a conduit and a clearinghouse for practical green information and advice, she urges her fellow Los Angelites (and beyond) to think critically about the choices they have for their lives. Siel explains that writing in the first person helps her to distribute information that she s learned in a non-obtrusive or judgmental way. We ve also found that this is particularly important when exploring new concepts or ways of living that might seem a bit strange at first to a new comer. It s so much more appealing to encourage and teach rather than berate and judge! Thanks Siel! Kevin Bayuk: Urban PermacultureKevin Bayuk: Urban Permaculture
from Ryan Is Hungry
May 26, 2007

Kevin Bayuk rents an apartment in the Haight Ashbury district of San Fransicso. He also grows a large amount of his own food, actively composts, raises ducks and captures rainwater- total urban permaculture. One might think you need to own a large plot of land in the country to create an abundant food growing system, but Kevin proves this theory wrong on a number of counts. Often the density of an urban community is a hundred times greener than suburban areas because resources are so close together. You can walk to the store or take an electric bus over to work. Kevin shows us how he practices urban permaculture in all aspects of his life- from growing food to educating his community. Check out the Urban Alliance for Sustainability and Daily Acts for more info on getting hip to urban permaculture. Thanks Kevin! Keith aka Skeeter is living totally off the grid. Starting with a raw plot of land, he built his house from scratch, dug a well, created a solar power system and is completely responsible for all his waste. Keith is a good example of someone who got tired of paying utilities and mortgages to live on earth. He took matters into his own hands and decided to be as independent as possible. Deciding to live out in the wilderness is one way to go off the grid. We ll be exploring other ways of being independent in urban environments in some of our next posts. Thanks Keith! We ve been Vermicomposting for almost 4 months now and it s been quite a learning experience! We recently moved to a place where we could place our bin outside, so we got a little lazy about smell. Pretty soon, the smell was really bad! Too much liquid, not enough drainage and air was causing anaerobic (sans oxygen) bacteria to grow which causes that rotting smell. Jay has been patient enough to help the bin drain by rotating in paper, dirt and sawdust. Drilling several dozen extra drain holes helped a bunch too! May 04, 2007

James Burgett founded the ACCRC, Alameda County Computer Resource Center, to essentially make money off of equipment that other people thought was obsolete garbage. Thirteen years later he s reformatted, refurbished and donated thousands of computers to folks who might not ever have the chance to own one. The ACCRC offers workshops on how to refurbish and reuse junked equipment and how to install and use the open source OS Ubuntu Linux which is free for all. Saving valuable equipment from the landfill, James explains, is not exactly profitable for the California Electronics Recycling Initiative, which encourages recyclers to mine and grind parts rather than refurb for reuse. Seeing a lot of furniture and used junk on the sidewalk? Must be moving day in your neighborhood! With a little extra pre-planning and the right resources, you can make moving a green experience. Go through your closet, your desk, your entire apartment- decide what you absolutely need and recycle the rest! Recycling can take the form of reselling on Craigslist or eBay. Donations to Goodwill and Salvation Army are perfect examples of re-use. Find electronics and battery recycling centers near you through Earth911.org. We ve moved 3 times in the last 3 years and have become experts at selling all our stuff online. If we find that we need a certain item again after we ve moved (like a desk or some chairs) we cruise Craigslist for cheap or free deals. When we move again and can t fit them in our car, we put them back into the cycle and sell or give away!
