Violence boiled over at the Australian Open on Friday when dozens of Serbian and Bosnian fans fought after the match between Novak Djokovic and Amer Delic. He may be young, but Orlando, FL -based Hip-Hop Artist Vuk Kovacevic - better known as SiXKills (LyricaL) - has seen a lot in sixteen years. While friends and fellow rappers were growing up on the mean streets of the USA, Kovacevic was being raised in a war zone: the former Yugoslavia. "I remember life before we came here. Open the refrigerator, it's empty - there's simply not enough food for everyone. You have to get out on the street, you have to expect you're going to rob or be robbed," Kovecevic says of his homeland. "When we arrived in the US it was hard to learn to speak English. I learned, but fell in with people I shouldn't have been learning from; I was making deliveries for people who were about taking advantage, and just associating with the wrong people in general," Kovacevic says. "A few years after we got here my cousin passed away. It changed my family - and me. I was out of it for a while. Now I use hip hop to calm down. I don't smoke, I don't drink... hip hop takes the place of all that." Kovacevic's raps mix life experiences with Serbian - and American - pride. "I'm inspired by what I've gone through, by the fucked up world around me," he says. "Everyone wants to make it big in this business," he says, "but I'm not doing this for the money. I love to rap, I live to perform." Kovacevik recognizes that his age may be a cause for skepticism from some, but discounts this. "People may think I'm young, and have some childish wishes, but rapping is for me." One needs only listen to the words in the Kovecevic's "Who's Next", a song with lyrics which refer to friends he's lost, to acknowledge that Kovacevic's lyrics come deep from his heart and his life experiences - regardless of his age. "I've got the blessed wooden cross around my neck, and a prayer to help me make it," he says. "And no matter what life throws at me, I'll always have rap."
