Aero-TV Profiles A Woman In Combat -- Lt. Col. Jacqui Marty (Part 2)

Another Truly Fascinating Interview From WAI 2009! Lt. Colonel Jacqui Marty is a woman to this nation owes a great deal... and yet, during an interview with Aero-TV, Marty spent a considerable time telling us about all those she feels a debt to. That's the kind of person that flies an unarmed tanker into combat, time and time again, all over the world. An American Woman In Combat... As ANN's Gina Doughty told us a few weeks ago, Jacqui Marty looks like an ordinary woman. At least, she looks as ordinary as anyone can, wearing a well-worn flight suit with a Lieutenant Colonel's insignia, sitting on a panel with four other women telling "Stories from the War Front." A combat-experienced Air Force pilot who can claim to have traveled to every State and a dozen foreign countries, she's got a few stories to share. "We were scared and excited," she says bluntly, describing the sleepless night her crew spent before a sortie over Kosovo. She describes her emotions with the same factual simplicity that she describes her aircraft. But even on the front lines she found moments of levity. In the air her copilot--another female Air Force pilot on her first combat mission--exclaimed excitedly that there must be a celebration going on below. "She said, 'Look, they're shooting off fireworks!'" Marty says with a small laugh. "I told her, 'Uh, that's not fireworks. They are actually shooting at us." She is quick to reassure, "We were high enough it wasn't a factor." She adds thoughtfully, "But is sure was something to see." Marty recounts another story of being stranded in Thailand after a hydraulic failure on her KC-10. After several days and many phone calls to coordinate the arrival of parts and personnel to effect repairs, she caught the attention of the staff at the hotel. When asked, the Thai member of Marty's crew attempted explain that she was the commanding officer, in charge of a nine-person crew--which happened to be all male. Marty said "She understood the words, but couldn't grasp the concept of a woman in charge." After an extensive explanation, Marty's crew member eventually got the message across. "Suddenly it was like the Red Sea parting when I walked into a room. They bowed and smiled [when they greeted me]. I went to my room and there was a huge fruit basket. It was very nice, but I thought it was a little late for a welcome basket," she recalls. "When I found out what had happened, you can bet I took advantage of that as often as I could!" She says with a laugh. Able to pursue a career, given recognition and status equal to that of men, allowed the same opportunities, Marty expresses empathy for women denied such things. She struggles to find the words, and emotion fogs her voice as she continues, "It was then that I realized... how lucky I am to be an American woman, with the rights and freedoms we have... I'm very grateful." Almost Like The Real Thing... The largest exhibition of modeling and simulation technology in history was held just a few weeks ago Orlando from December 1-4, 2008. Thanks to the able guidance of the folks of I/ITSEC, especially their John Williams, the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference, Aero-TV got another good long look at some of the impressive simulation and training technologies being brought to our defense by military training operations. The event, known as the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference, (I/ITSEC) occupies nearly 200,000 square feet of exhibition space at the cavernous Orange County Convention Center. More than 575 exhibitors, including government, research, academic, industry and military participants, display all facets of modeling and simulation -- live, virtual and constructive. Virtual reality and totally immersive environments were prominently featured in hundreds of exhibitor areas. Applications on display will include immersive environments for cultural and language training, predictive simulations for weather phenomena, structural failure analysis and other complex predictive applications. Additionally, virtual medical environments for military and first responder training were featured, along with a series of special events focusing on the future of medical simulation technology. I/ITSEC 2008 also featured a serious games competition, with 12 entries from around the world, gaming everything from search and rescue training to historical scenarios. In 2007, almost 20,000 attendees from 50 countries crowded the exhibition hall floor and Aero-Tv shot over a dozen features there on the floor... Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird

The Lockheed SR-71 was an advanced, long-range, Mach 3 strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed from the Lockheed A-12 and YF-12A aircraft by the Lockheed Skunk Works. The SR-71 was unofficially named the Blackbird, and called the Habu by its crews. Clarence Kelly Johnson was responsible for many of the design's innovative concepts. A defensive feature of the aircraft was its high speed and operating altitude, whereby, if a surface-to-air missile launch were detected, standard evasive action was simply to accelerate. The SR-71 line was in service from 1964 to 1998, with 12 of the 32 aircraft being destroyed in accidents, though none were lost to enemy action.

The KC-10 Extender Shows Aero-TV It's Multi-Mission Tanker Role (Part 3)

Cool: A KC-10 Flight Engineer Explains Life Aboard A Multi-Mission Tanker One of the highlights of the 2008 Oshkosh Fly-In was the chance to get up close and personal with all manner of military aircraft -- the same birds that can be called upon at a moment's notice to serve and protect this nation... While the fighters get most of the glory and the bombers get some notice here and there, rarely do we here about the tankers. Take the KC-10 for instance... According to the US Air Force, the KC-10 'Extender' is an Air Mobility Command advanced tanker and cargo aircraft designed to provide increased global mobility for US armed forces. Although the KC-10's primary mission is aerial refueling, it can combine the tasks of a tanker and cargo aircraft by refueling fighters and simultaneously carry the fighter support personnel and equipment on overseas deployments. The KC-10 is also capable of transporting litter and ambulatory patients using patient support pallets during aeromedical evacuations. The KC-10 can transport up to 75 people and nearly 170,000 pounds of cargo a distance of about 4,400 miles unrefueled. In addition to the three main DC-10 wing fuel tanks, the KC-10 has three large fuel tanks under the cargo floor, one under the forward lower cargo compartment, one in the center wing area and one under the rear compartment. Combined, the capacity of the six tanks carry more than 356,000 pounds of fuel - almost twice as much as the KC-135 Stratotanker. Using either an advanced aerial refueling boom, or a hose and drogue centerline refueling system, the KC-10 can refuel a wide variety of US and allied military aircraft within the same mission. The aircraft is equipped with lighting for night operations. The KC-10's boom operator controls refueling operations through a digital, fly-by wire system. Sitting in the rear of the aircraft, the operator can see the receiver aircraft through a wide window. During boom refueling operations, fuel is transferred to the receiver at a maximum rate of 1,100 gallons (4,180 liters) per minute; the hose and drogue refueling maximum rate is 470 gallons per minute. The Automatic Load Alleviation System and Independent Disconnect System greatly enhances safety and facilitates air refueling. The KC-10 can be air-refueled by a KC-135 or another KC-10A to increase its delivery range. The large cargo-loading door can accept most air forces' fighter unit support equipment. Powered rollers and winches inside the cargo compartment permit moving heavy loads. The cargo compartment can accommodate loads ranging from 27 pallets to a mix of 17 pallets and 75 passengers. Since Sept. 11, 2001, KC-10s have played a prominent role in the on-going Global War on Terrorism. The KC-10 has flown more than 350 missions guarding U.S. skies as a part of Operation Noble Eagle. During operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, KC-10s have flown more than 1,390 missions delivering critical air refueling support to numerous joint and coalition receiver aircraft. We Admit It... We Get a Lump In Our Throats Over This Stuff There can't be a patriotic aviator anywhere in America immune to the "Lump In Your Throat" sensation created by the extraordinary sights, sounds and aura of a USAF Heritage Flight. The USAF Heritage Flight program was established in 1997 to commemorate the Air Force's 50th anniversary. It involves today's state-of-the-art fighters flying in close formation with World War II, Korean and Vietnam era fighters such as the P-51 Mustang and the F-86 Sabre. The flight's mission is to safely and proudly display the evolution of U.S. Air Force airpower and to support the Air Force's recruiting and retention efforts. According to the USAF, there are 21 pilots in this program. The modern Air Force fighters are piloted by the seven Air Combat Command (ACC) single-ship demonstration team pilots and the vintage warbirds are piloted by 12 civilians, including former Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marine pilots, and several former astronauts. In addition, two active duty F-4 pilots and an F-22A pilot joined the program in 2005. During the 2008 Ocean City AirShow, ANN's Jim Campbell got a chance to sit down with one of the USAF's finest... an F-15 Jock by the name of Sam Joplin, who gave us some inside info on what the heritage Flight Program means to one of the men who flies for it.
