Wednesday 7:42 ACTU National Secretary
from RN Breakfast-individual stories June 17, 2008
The union movement movement's unrelenting campaign against the former government's Workchoices regime has been credited as one of the things to deliver last November's labor election win. The Rudd government has moved quickly to begin setting up a new system, already making laws to replace Australian Workplace Agreements, and this week releasing a ten point list of minimum conditions. The release comes after more advertising by the unions, this time to remind the government of its obligation to act in the interests of the now ubiquitous 'working families'. But are the unions getting what they want ?

Barack Obama Pins Bush Economic Woes On John McCain & It Looks Like A Good Fit
from RetroVision Media June 10, 2008
The highlights are: A. Barack Obama's promises to Israel that he may have a difficult time honoring in the future. B. Barack Obama fires first salvo across John McCain's economic bow while only receiving harmless smoke and mirrors in return. Obama has successfully pinned the Bush administration's economic woes on McCain like a tail on the donkey. From our view, he wears it well. C. Country bracing for higher fuel and food prices as farmers fear modest crops this year. With Ben Bernanke signaling an end to rate cuts to stem inflation, the country is in for a rough ride.

"No Peace, No Work" Mayday Longshore Strike Against the War
from Pepperspray Productions' "Indymedia Presents" June 08, 2008
It was a moment without historical precedent, American workers striking against a war that their government is waging. On Mayday this year, the International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) shut down every port on the west coast of the United Stated--all 26 of them--in opposition to the US war against the people of Iraq. A few weeks back we reported on the struggle of Iraqi labor unions in the Basra area, who are fighting against the privatization of Iraqi ports and oil fields. As US missiles rained down on their houses, and the puppet government tried to arrest union leaders, they called for international solidarity and support from organized labor. The ILWU answered that cry bigtime. Now, on "Indymedia Presents" ----we bring you a report of the Mayday strike that completely shut down every port on the west coast for at least 8 hours. Longshoremen stayed off the job and in major port cities they marched, proud, in their union jackets, banners unfurled. In response, dock workers in Iraq shut down the port there for two hours. It was like a blinking signal light on a distant shore at night, acknowledging that the message of solidarity had been received. The Seattle Times reported that "dozens" of dock workers protested in Seattle. In our report you can clearly see the demonstration is 5 lanes wide, stretching back past the focus of the camera. There were "dozens" just in the first row or two. PepperSpray was there to document this heroic moment. It was a bit of a cinematographer's dilemma: how do you show something like a stop work situation, where the story is "something's NOT happening." We arrived at the hall early and union members showed us where to get beautiful shots of the idle port. Later we captured the march, the music, the mood. We're proud of the ILWU, and it shows in this report. http://www.ilwu.org/longshore Be the Media! RetroVision Media's Analysis of Obama's Win and Clinton's Refusal To Concede
from RetroVision Media June 04, 2008
Barack Obama, the nominee of the Democratic Party as of last night’s final primary contest, awakens this morning to the nightmare of a shotgun wedding with Hillary Clinton as his running mate. After clearing every hurdle to achieve what no person of color, man or woman has in the history of American politics, he now has to find a way to placate a bunch of self-centered losers from forcible glomming on to his success. Hillary Clinton failed to do the right thing, the stand up thing, and the proper thing by congratulating Barack Obama on winning the needed number of delegates to capture the nomination. Intentionally, she snatched the door open to hijack her way back into the White House by hanging on to Obama’s coattails. Somehow, she has deluded herself and the fringe element within her core support that the Obama camp gives a rat’s ass about what she wants. America is a country that loves a winner and shuns its losers. There is little room for disgruntled second place finishers.

RetroVision Media Covers McClellan's Hot Book That is Heating Up Rove's Ass
from RetroVision Media May 28, 2008
As much as we hate rats and rat bastards, many times it is the only way to get to the truth. This is especially true when the government and the power that runs it is involved. Scott McClellan’s new book "What Happened" leveled the hammer big time on the Bush administration without mercy, leaving Karl Rove’s ass hanging in the wind. With John Conyers, heading up the House Judiciary Committee shoving a subpoena up Karl’s butt to force some conversation, conversation that Karl and the rest of the White House crew has been thumbing their noses at, maybe the tool needed to give Rove the tight screw he has coming. To date Karl has been playing the executive privileged game saying he and his “Boyz” are above it all. But this well timed book release is forcing the all the ugly and largely ignored stories of what was really going on behind the scenes that led this country to war at a time that has to have Karl “The Pillsbury Dough Boy” shitting bricks

RetroVision Media Covers The Cost Conscious Holiday Weekend
from RetroVision Media May 27, 2008
Returning from any three-day weekend generally leaves some of us a little sluggish and lacking that creative spark. Fortunately for me, an anonymous comment left at the blog gave me the spark for today’s podcast. Our last podcast posting covered the possibility of worldwide despair due to global disasters along with food and fuel shortages topped off with domestic and international economic downturns that last beyond our comfort zones and levels of measurable tolerance. We also mentioned that because of said poor economic outlook and global catastrophes many would be lucky to have a backyard to have a backyard Bar BQ in this year. Based on most reports from airline hotels and restaurants many did just that and stayed close to home.

Steven Greenhouse (BSS #213)
from The Bat Segundo Show May 20, 2008
Steven Greenhouse is the New York Times labor reporter and the author of The Big Squeeze. Condition of the Show: Reporting upon the darker truths of America. Author: Steven Greenhouse Subjects Discussed: [List forthcoming] EXCERPT FROM SHOW: Correspondent: Look at Jennifer Miller, who is this woman who worked at HP for ten years. She didn t have to work as a temp for that long. She could have easily cut out. She could have gone and demanded more from the HP managers. So I would argue that the workers who have allowed themselves to be placed in these particular conditions are perhaps just as responsible as these businesses and these corporations that are trying to squeeze out more profits and also trying to combat the influx of low-cost imports. Greenhouse: Again, Ed, you ask a good question, and it s hard to say. Jennifer Miller was a worker at HP. High school graduate. Very little college. She started as a McDonald s worker. She became a McDonald s manager. She got tired of that. Then she got a permanent job at HP. That job was sent overseas. So she was kind of bought out. Then a few months later, she was approached. How would you like to return to HP as a temp? She thought it was going to be a two-month gig. And as I explained in the book, she was there for ten years as a temp. She said that the job was good. It used a lot of advanced skills. She was often treated with respect, but she said the bad thing was she was a temp and didn t get the same benefits as HP workers. She didn t quite get the respect. So you ask why didn t she quit? Correspondent: And I should point out that she was even barred from the company parties. I mean, this is a key indicator. In my view, I would say, Well to hell with this. I m going to find someone who I can be on staff with. Greenhouse: It wasn t just she. But all temps were barred from the company you know, they might create a wonderful new piece of software, created a wonderful printer, and all the regular permanent employees could go to the party and celebrate and go for the two-day ski holiday to celebrate. But the temps who work alongside the regular workers in a crazy situation, they weren t invited to the parties. So yeah, for someone like Jennifer, there was some eating humble pie there. So the question is why didn t she quit? She said, For me, Jennifer Miller, a mere high-school graduate living in Idaho, that was a terrific job. I was making $30 an hour. I was really using my brain. I was often working alongside terrific people. Sort of semi, somewhat treated as an equal. But on the other hand, no. And she said, considering what else was out there, going back to McDonald s working as a manager, which isn t such a bad job, but she said working at HP as a temp was better. Her argument was HP was good in many ways, but there was this one big negative. That she was treated as a temp.
