What is Yi Jia Zi? It is a Chinese expression referencing a sixty-year period. At a meeting organized by Pacific Foundation in Taiwan called Yi Jia Zi Academic Discussion on 13th and 14th of November, a gathering of the highest-ranking retired officials, as well as renowned scholars, from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, were in attendance to discuss the subject of cross strait relations and the possibility of a peace treaty. To date, this meeting was the largest ever organized on this topic. Professor Cai was one of the participants at this meeting. In this excellent interview, he openly reveals what he observed -- many sharp exchanges during the discussions, counter to the widely held perceptions of seemingly calm and steady advances in cross strait relations. He further described that the Chinese participants were startled to discover that many KMT scholars, who they usually consider as pro-unification, actually sounded more like DPP party officials when it comes to the issue of unification.
