From : popular posts - blip.tv (beta)
BEIJING, China, 15 August 2008 -- One day after the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, UNICEF China hosted 'Champions for Children' -- an evening of advocacy for the most vulnerable children in China. The event gathered high-level Chinese officials Olympians, artists and corporate partners at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. The event started with an acknowledgement to the Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF, who has been a significant supporter to UNICEF's work in China over the years. Among the celebrities in attendance was UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Jackie Chan. Champions for Children centred mainly on helping children -- especially girls -- who do not have equal access to education or participation in sports, as well as children affected by HIV/AIDS. The event also focused on children affected by the recent Sichuan earthquake. To read the full story, visit: http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/china_45226.html

 From : popular posts - blip.tv (beta)
NEW YORK, USA, 14 August 2008 -- UNICEF is at the forefront of a nationwide effort to end domestic and gender-based violence in Papua New Guinea. Recent studies show that violence towards women and children is endemic in the country. For UNICEF, a major priority is to have this cycle of abuse identified as a public health crisis. According to UNICEF's Regional Office for East Asia and the Pacific and local advocates, Papua New Guinea has one of the highest rates of family violence in the world. Three-quarters of children and two-thirds of women reportedly have experienced violence in their homes. To read the full story, visit: http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/papuang_45211.html

 From : popular posts - blip.tv (beta)
YANGON, Myanmar, 12 August 2008 -- UNICEF Myanmar has pledged to continue relief works until the lives of cyclone-affected families are fully restored. It has been over three months since the deadly Cyclone Nargis struck south west parts of Myanmar in early May. Relief efforts are now focusing on repairing damage and giving children a sense of normalcy with child-friendly spaces and an emphasis on returning to school. Cyclone Nargis destroyed or damaged over 4,000 schools and more than 600 health facilities, contaminated 4,000 drinking water wells and separated hundreds of young children from their parents and close relatives. "It has been three months now since the cyclone hit, and there is still much work to do, such as distributing family kits, organizing child friendly spaces, providing safe water supplies and immunizing children," said Ramesh Shrestha, UNICEF Representative in Myanmar. "This operation will last at least one year and depends on continued access to the affected areas."

 From : recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
BEIT FOURIK, Occupied Palestinian Territory, 8 August 2008 -- The Occupied Palestinian Territory has routine vaccination coverage of more than 90 per cent. The absence of common childhood diseases such as measles and polio reflect the commitment of the Palestinian Authority towards Palestinian children. UNICEF and its partners support that commitment. This year, the Government of Japan has donated 2.4 million dollars to ensure that 117,000 newborns and pregnant women are vaccinated. The money will also be used to train health workers, especially in the evaluation of infectious diseases and to ensure that they have sufficient supplies and equipment. From : recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
During World Breastfeeding Week, 1-7 August 2008, UNICEF and other advocacy groups are promoting exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, which experts believe could save 1.3 million infant lives every year. SOUTHERN BOGALAY, Myanmar, 7 August 2008 -- Ma Khin Mar San lives in Kyonegyi Konethechaung, one of the rural islands in Southern Bogalay in the Irrawaddy Delta. Nearly 800 people in her village were killed by the storm surge that followed Cyclone Nargis in May. Ma Khin Mar San's youngest step child was among the casualties. She was due to give birth when the cyclone struck but was able to escape harm by climbing a coconut tree. She and her surviving step child were without help and proper shelter for four days before food rations arrived. After her baby was born, village elders advised her not to breastfeed, saying that she was too weak from the storm. They told her to feed her baby formula. It was only after a UNICEF Health and Nutrition Officer intervened that the mother and child were properly assessed and encouraged to exclusively breastfeed her baby. Ma Khin Mar San was transferred to a local hospital where her child was already showing signs of malnutrition. To read the full story, visit: http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/myanmar_45109.html

Tajikistan, 7 August 2008 - Over the last decade, Tajikistan Breastfeeding Week has been made possible through the support provided by UNICEF and the Ministry of Health (MoH) of Tajikistan and its partners. This year, in an effort to increase support from other channels, World Breastfeeding Week is promoting the global theme of, 'going for the gold by supporting mothers to breastfeed'. "Support for breastfeeding is crucially important for mothers, babies and the community itself. This golden support, irrespective of conditions, ensures the best start for children's lives," said Ruth Leano, Deputy Representative of UNICEF in Tajikistan. According to the National Breastfeeding Coordinator Rahmatulloev Sherali only 25 per cent of Tajik mothers are breastfeeding their babies exclusively for the first six months. From : recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
MEXICO CITY, Mexico, 08 AUGUST 2008 -- As the 17th International AIDS Conference came to a close in Mexico City, issues affecting children were front and center. "This conference is the first one that's really had children on the agenda," said UNICEF's HIV/AIDS Chief Jimmy Kolker. "There have been more than 300 presentations dealing with children and AIDS." Mr. Kolker stressed that a number of 'second-generation' issues dealing with children still require more attention. "One of the issues that has been insufficiently addressed here is the question of adolescents who are HIV-positive, who are now at risk themselves for transmitting the virus, and who may be growing up not knowing they're infected," Mr. Kolker said. "The good news is they are alive as teenagers. The difficult problem is that this creates a whole new set of issues that we haven't dealt with before." From : recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
SHEBEDINO, Ethiopia, 5 August 2008 -- The rainy season is well underway in much of Ethiopia, but while the rains bring hope to rural communities, they also create ideal breeding conditions for malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Over twenty million insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) have been distributed to more than ten million households in malaria-prone areas of Ethiopia since 2005. The nets have only a three-year lifespan, however, so those that were distributed early in the campaign now need replacement. Mulunesh Musse shares one such treated bednet with her four children in Shebedino District. The bednet is now ripped along one side and has a gaping hole in front, so it no longer fully protects her and her family from malaria. From : Sports - recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
NEW YORK, 6 August 2008 -- As the eyes of the world turn towards China for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games, UNICEF is taking the opportunity to focus attention on one of the country's most marginalized groups -- children affected by AIDS. On 9 August more than 80 children affected by AIDS will be greeted by Olympic athletes and high-level government officials in the Great Hall of the People. The children are from seven provinces and have either lost parents to AIDS, or live with parents who are infected. The meeting is part of a series of events that will also feature actor and first UNICEF China AIDS Ambassador Pu Cunxin and gymnast Lou Yun, who won Olympic gold in 1984. From : recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
HATITILA, Bangladesh, 31 July 2008 -- At the community development centre in Hatitila, a remote village in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, Athoi Marma, 19, teaches songs about safe hygiene practices to 20 pre-school children. The songs are in Marma, an indigenous language spoken by only around 150,000 people in Bangladesh. Athoi is one of 25 women from this hard-to-reach region who have received training from UNICEF to work as community hygiene promoters. The 15-day training seminar equipped her with tips on how to work with the community to promote safer hygiene practices. Now, Athoi has become an agent of change for her village. "We used to drink stream water and utilize unsafe water for cooking," she explains. "If we had known that unsafe water was harmful for our health -- that this was causing diarrhoea and respiratory disease -- we would not be drinking it." From : recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
DJIBOUTI, Djibouti, 31 July 2008 -- Hadj Dideh Primary School is one of the many schools in Djibouti that are in urgent need of repair. It will also be one the first schools in the country to be rehabilitated with support from a partnership between UNICEF and Dubai Cares -- a Gulf-based initiative that has raised $1 billion to help educate 1 million children in poor countries. At Hadj Dideh Primary, the old classrooms are run-down and falling apart. The walls are cracked and there are large holes in the ceilings. The school's library is in urgent need of new books, and facilities for water and sanitation are poor. "The toilets are broken, the plumbing doesn't work. There are faeces everywhere and the walls have been vandalised," said Arid Mohamed Salem, 11. To read the full story, visit: http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/djibouti_44918.html

 From : recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
During World Breastfeeding Week, 1-7 August 2008, UNICEF and other advocacy groups are promoting exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, which experts believe could save 1.3 million infant lives every year. LOMBOK, Indonesia, 29 July 2008 -- It's early morning as Dwinta Dyah Larasanti, a midwife, sets off to the local health clinic prepared to fight poor infant feeding. Dwinta's weapon in this battle is simple: accurate information. Dwinta is one of many new midwives trained with support from UNICEF in proper infant feeding practices. Now she is passing on her expertise to mothers in the community. At the clinic, she uses simple tools like flip charts and illustrated guides to explain the importance of proper breastfeeding. "You should give your babies only breast milk from birth up to the age of six months. No formula, no solid food. Nothing but mother's milk," Ms. Larasanti tells her class. "Even when you start to wean your child, mother's milk can be given up to two years and beyond." To read the full story, visit: http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/indonesia_44880.html

 From : recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
NEW YORK, 29 July 2008 -- The '2008 Report on the global AIDS epidemic', released by UNAIDS today, reveals that fewer people are dying of AIDS than in previous years and fewer are becoming infected. "The results are encouraging," said UNICEF's Chief of HIV/AIDS programmes, Jimmy Kolker. "Putting people on treatment has worked," he added. "It means that people are living longer and the prevention messages seem to be getting through, although there are still huge challenges for preventing new infections." UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, brings together 10 UN agencies -- including UNICEF -- to help prevent new HIV infections, care for people living with HIV and mitigate the impact of AIDS worldwide. Through its global reports, UNAIDS releases updated AIDS figures every two years. To read the full story, visit: http://www.unicef.org/aids/index_44893.html

 From : recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
The XVll International AIDS Conference begins in Mexico on 3 August. About 25,000 people are expected to attend, including political and public health leaders, and young people affected by AIDS. Here is one in a series of stories leading up to the annual conference. SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras, 30 July 2008 -- Keren Gonzalez is only 12 years old, but she is one of the featured guests at the world's largest AIDS conference being held in Mexico next week. There, she will have the ear of leaders such as United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Director General of the World Health Organization Margaret Chan and the former US President and founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation, Bill Clinton. Keren has lived with HIV her entire life. Her family broke the news to her when she was five. "My parents used drawings to explain it to me," she said. From : recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
CHITOSE, Japan, 28 July 2008 -- For 39 young people who gathered in Chitose on the island of Hokkaido, Japan, earlier this month, the G8 meeting of world leaders was more than just a distant, high-level international event. This diverse group had been chosen to represent their countries at the fourth 'Junior 8' Summit. For them, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to craft a message of urgency and hope to the G8 industrialized countries, as well as the rest of the world. "You have the responsibility to represent the voices and experiences of many more children," UNICEF Regional Director for East Asia and the Pacific Anupama Rao Singh told the assembled delegates. Over the next three days, the children and young people broke into small groups in order to pen a document called the Chitose Declaration. Its stated goal: to turn young people's ideas 'into actions, not just words.' To read the full story, visit: http://www.unicef.org/videoaudio/ramfiles/7831h_j8musicvideo.ram

 From : PersonalorAuto-biographical - recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
NEW YORK, USA, 25 July 2008 -- Nine productions from the 'OneminutesJr' project received an unprecedented 14 nominations and two awards in the one-minute films competition at the 2008 Stranger Festival in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The films, made during OneminutesJr workshops sponsored by UNICEF around the world, are all the work of filmmakers under the age of 20. UNICEF filmmakers took away two very prestigious honours -- the MTV Stranger Award and the OneminutesJr award in the 'Inside Out' category. From : recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
ANALANJIROFO, Madagascar, 28 July 2008 -- Ann M. Veneman, on the first-ever visit by a UNICEF Executive Director to Madagascar, spent Sunday in Analanjirofo, the region hardest hit by Cyclone Ivan earlier this year. Madagascar, the world's fourth largest island, is prone to frequent cyclones and tropical storms. Cyclone Ivan was one of the biggest to hit the island, striking in February 2008 with winds of up to 190 kilometres per hour. Accompanied by senior government officials, Veneman visited the region to assess reconstruction efforts. "I am pleased to see the impressive progress made in re-establishing basic health and education services," she said. "This is due to the engagement among the government, local communities and international organizations working together to improve conditions for children and their families."
