UNICEF: Creating a "Virtual Workspace" at the J8 Summit
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) July 07, 2008
CHITOSE CITY, Hokkaido, Japan, 7 July 2008 -- Every evening after dinner they begin to congregate in the dimly lit lobby of the hotel. Small groups of teenagers sit with their laptops open, their faces tinted blue by the computer screens, typing busily as a collective 'click-click' fills the room. Of course, they could be e-mailing their families and friends from the far-off countries from which they've come. But look over any shoulder and chances are, you will see the familiar logo of the Junior 8 Summit. For the young delegates attending this event -- absorbed for much of the day in high-pressure debates about pressing world issues -- this moment is vitally important. It is when they have time, either as a group or individually, to ponder some of the solutions they will adopt by the time this summit finishes. For them, a valuable space which has been made possible by technology. With every J8 delegate using a laptop loaned by Sony for the duration of the summit, and with each of those computers connected by wi-fi, the virtual 'J8 Workspace' has become their common area for collaboration. They have been meeting in cyberspace whenever they want, regardless of whether they are at the official hotel or the J8 Summit venue here in Chitose City on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. The meeting brings together a group of children and young people who promise to make an even bigger noise on the world stage. Hosted by the Government of Japan and supported by UNICEF, this year's J8 Summit will closely follow the agenda and scope of the G8 meeting of world leaders, but will concentrate specifically on issues affecting young people around the globe. It is designed to build relationships among a group of young people not only from the industrialized G8 nations, but also from the developing world. At the end of their deliberations, the 39 delegates to the J8 will formulate a declaration that they will present in a meeting with the G8 leaders, who are gathering here for their summit on 7-9 July. UNICEF: Preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV
from - blip.tv (beta) June 30, 2008
DJIBOUTI, Djibouti, 23 June 2008 -- Shortly before giving birth to her second child, Saida, 22, became ill and was tested for HIV through a UNICEF-supported maternal health clinic. Saida now knows she is living with HIV, but her passion for life and her determination to care for her young family have not been diminished by the diagnosis. "I would have been dead," Saida says. "They used to say it was tuberculosis to explain why people were dying. But now they test for HIV. They can take care of you and you can survive." When Saida received her diagnosis, she immediately began a programme to prevent mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV. The PMTCT programme provides women with free anti-retroviral drugs and health care for their children. UNICEF is working to raise community awareness of HIV prevention and working with non-governmental organizations to provide social support to people like Saida who are living with HIV and AIDS. UNICEF: Learning centers for Palestinian youth in Syria
from - blip.tv (beta) June 30, 2008
HUSEINEYEH CAMP, Syria, 24 June 2008 -- If Aziza Melkash were not in this yellow-curtained room among 31 other teenagers intently discussing research findings, she would be holed up at home with little to do and nowhere to go. As an eighth-grader living in Huseineyeh camp near Damascus, Aziza first came to the UNICEF-supported adolescent-friendly learning space (AFLS) here in 2005 to learn about child abuse. The diminutive adolescent and scores of her peers in Palestinian refugee camps across Syria have since learned something even more important: how to recognize what needs to change in their communities, and how to be part of that change. "Now, when I see something wrong, I speak up," says Aziza. Since 2005, up to 3,500 adolescents have received AFLS training on child rights and life skills -- ranging from leadership and communication to healthy behaviour -- as part of a Norwegian-funded, UNICEF-designed programme to help young Palestinian refugees better protect themselves and contribute to their communities. UNICEF: Rebuilding lives in China after the quake
from - blip.tv (beta) June 30, 2008
LONGNAN PREFECTURE, China, 20 June 2008 -- Bending over a tiny desk, seven-year-old Zhang Ziwen did his homework in a tent near the Bailongjiang River. "I used to live in the town with my family. But now we can't live in our house anymore," Zhang said. Before the earthquake struck the region in May, Zhang attended all his classes from Monday to Friday. But since the quake, he has been one of the 518,000 students who have limited classes taught in tents or pre-fabricated classrooms in Longnan Prefecture. "I am still afraid of the aftershocks. There is no electricity in the tent at night and I am bit by lots of mosquitoes," he said. "I just wish to go to school every day, as usual." UNICEF: Using folklore to promote education in Malaysia
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 25, 2008
TASIK CINI, Malaysia, 17 June 2008 -- Assembled around a village elder, members of the younger generation listen to tales of their ancestors. Clad in a traditional headpiece made of dried leaves, Awang Bin Alok, 67, shares his stories with young students sitting on the porch of a wooden house. The oral tradition continues to serve an important role for the ethnic Jakun community of Tasik Cini in Peninsular Malaysia. It is a role that not only informs children like nine-year-old Nurkafiha about the past, but could also brighten her chances for the future. "I like the folktales because they are funny," said Nurkafiha. "And I get to act, and read and write." Introducing ethnic folklore into the curriculum is part of a UNICEF-supported effort to reduce dropout rates among the indigenous inhabitants of Malaysia, known as the Orang Asli. UNICEF: Rebuilding schools in Myanmar
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 25, 2008
YANGON, Myanmar 17 June 2008 -- The weather has become an added challenge to delivering aid in cyclone-ravaged Myanmar. On Sunday, a UNICEF mission delivering school tents was hampered by strong wind gusts, rain and pools of mud, making the unloading of some 900 kg of supplies very difficult. UNICEF and its partners have been able to reach people who live in the southern Irrawaddy Delta, but more aid is needed. Where villages have lost school buildings, UNICEF is delivering about 80 large tents that will provide safe learning spaces for more than 6,000 children. GROZNY, Chechnya, Russian Federation, 16 June 2008 -- The legacy of conflict is all over this indoor football field, where 11 young men, all missing a limb, regularly gather to score a goal for beating the odds. A local non-governmental organization know as Laman Az (Chechen for 'Voice of the Mountains') created the football team with help from UNICEF in 2002 as part of the Mine Action Survivor Assistance programme. UNICEF provided the team with basic equipment and restored the premises for training in the only surviving gym in war-torn Grozny. UNICEF: Fighting gun violence in Latin America and Caribbean
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 25, 2008
KINGSTON, Jamaica 5 June 2008 UNICEF and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today called for increased effort by all stakeholders to stem the illegal flow and use of small arms in Jamaica, saying gun control combined with long-term social interventions are critical to curb the armed violence that has enveloped the country. The UN agencies issued their appeal as the world observes the Global Week of Action against Gun Violence, and as Jamaica confronts what has been reported as one of the bloodiest periods of gang- and gun-related homicides in the nation's history. UNDP and UNICEF expressed deep concern for the effect of the spiraling murder rate on children and their communities, and ultimately the country's economic development. The agencies said small arms, which include machine guns, shotguns, assault rifles and other deadly firearms, are the dominant weapons used in the violence sweeping the island. In this video, UNICEF Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean Nils Kastberg discusses the need for new solutions to address the rising incidents of gun violence in that region. UNICEF: Palestinian children bear brunt of conflict.
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 17, 2008
GAZA, Occupied Palestinian Territory, 9 June 2008 -- UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa Sigrid Kaag visited the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel recently to see firsthand the enduring impact of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on children. "Under current conditions, the key challenges remain access to quality services and care, especially in education and health, and stronger protection systems at the household, community and government levels," said Ms. Kaag. "Children make up more than half the population in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and they bear the brunt of conflict, closure and increase in poverty levels." Ms. Kaag visited UNICEF-supported programmes in Gaza City as well as Gaza's Jabaliya camp, Bethlehem, Ramallah and Beit Lahiya. She also met the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, in the West Bank city of Bethlehem. "We are very hopeful because of the commitment we see in parents, the community and the leadership to build on progress in the systems and institutions that protect and nurture children's well-being," Ms. Kaag said during a visit to an adolescent-friendly learning centre near Bethlehem. UNICEF: Mia Farrow reports back on her visit to Central African Republic
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 17, 2008
NEW YORK - 15 July, 2008 - UNICEF Ambassador Mia Farrow just returned from a week-long trip to the Central African Republic. She brought back some sobering news, describing the people of the Central African Republic as, "without question, the most abandoned people on the earth." he Central African Republic (CAR) has been ravaged by civil war for a decade now, in addition to being affected by the conflict in neighboring Sudan. What's even worse, the people of CAR are terrorized by gangs of bandits who loot property and kidnap children. As a result, many families with children hide in the bush where they are threatened by disease and rape, have little to eat or drink, and have no school for their children to attend. More than 300,000 people are now refugees in their own country, and almost a million people have been affected by the ongoing violence. UNICEF is working on the ground in CAR, making sure that its abandoned people get the help they need. Among other things, UNICEF delivers health packages to women and children, feeds malnourished children, and helps build water pumps. UNICEF also operates many "bush schools," which are located in the bush where families have fled, so that children can go back to school. UNICEF: Food crisis ravages India's poorest children
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 17, 2008
GURAVAL VILLAGE, Madhya Pradesh, India, 9 June 2008 -- Despite a robust economy with 9 per cent annual growth in recent years, inflation and the food crisis in India now threaten to erode many of the gains made here. In order to address both the complex situation causing high rates of child malnutrition in India, the retail giant IKEA is supporting UNICEF India with an $80 million package of health, nutrition, and water and sanitation programmes over the next five years. In the state of Madhya Pradesh, which has the highest child mortality and child malnutrition rates in the country, government supplementary programmes are under threat. Community workers have complained that they can no longer give severely malnourished children a healthy, balanced diet out of the 2 Rupees per day that they receive from government for each child. http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/india_44409.html

UNICEF: Getting kids back to school in Myanmar
from - blip.tv (beta) June 11, 2008
YANGON, Myanmar, 3 June 2008 -- A new school year has begun as children head back to classes, just one month after Cyclone Nargis damaged or destroyed more than 4,000 schools in Myanmar. UNICEF, the Ministry of Education and local communities have been working together to distribute building materials to schools that were damaged or destroyed by the cyclone. Essential school supplies, learning materials and recreation kits for primary schools also have been distributed. Dressed in school uniforms, the children -- some accompanied by their parents -- strolled into the lane leading towards Post Primary School No. 32 in Hlaingtharyar township, one of the worst affected areas in Yangon division. The children, excited by this return to normalcy, began to arrive at six in the morning, an hour before classes were scheduled to start.
