We read today's story in The New York Times about the plans of dance titan Merce Cunningham to "invite" students to his Manhattan studio for classes on Monday via live streaming video. The Times also reports on Cunningham's plans to make video documentation and related information available for free and by subscription. Online video could have a big impact on the appreciation and growth of modern dance. For this art form, there are very few opportunities to see live dance performances and there is very little in television programming or films available. So, its encouraging to hear about the new effort by Merce Cunningham. Last March, I spent a week with another dance titan, choreographer Twyla Tharp in her New York studio apartment to learn about her use of video. In this segments, which I have posted today, Twyla demonstrates through archival video, how she came to create Baker's Dozen, one of her most celebrated works. She shares, for the first time, grainy black & white footage of her pregnancy. And, yes, we danced together, although I really followed her! I've published out little duet, which she calls Dancy/Dancy below. Have a good laugh!
