from The Star-Ledger on TVJersey on December 02, 2009
Duration: 170
When NFL quarterback Michael Vick was convicted of running a brutal dog-fighting ring in 2007, he was at the top of his game. But news of his Bad Newz Kennels branded the football star a dog-killer and earned him a two-year federal prison sentence. Vick is back in the NFL, but hes making an effort to show hes a changed man. In partnership with the Humane Society of the United States, Vick has been speaking to kids about the mistakes he has made and the cruelty of dog-fighting. At the Boys and Girls Club of Newark, Vick told young students and football fans he grew up in an impoverished neighborhood where dog-fighting and violence were the norm. The new lunch spot is like a soup kitchen and restaurant rolled in one, part of an emerging trend around the country, and the food is nutritious and largely from local sources. The result of a partnership between Elijah's Promise and Who Is My Neighbor?, the cafe is located at the Reformed Church of Highland Park, 19 S. 2nd Ave. For more info visit betterworldcafe.org.
