Uluru & The Olgas - On a Moody Day!
from Vimeo / Nature in HD on June 12, 2009

Duration: 0
This short film includes several time lapse sequences as well as a general introduction to the landscape around the worlds largest single sandstone monolith - Uluru (Ayers Rock) and it's partner formation, "The Olgas" (Kata Tjuta) in Central Australia. At the end of the piece is a time lapse sequence showing Uluru at sunset, an experience that sees hundreds of tourists a day from around the globe gather at the viewing area to witness. This is my first attempt at time lapse. Some of the sequences were shot hand-held and attempts have been made to use post processed image stabilisation to improve the picture. Others were shot using a tripod. Some were quite accidental - as when I was filming I didnt realise how they would look sped up with the shadows moving over the landscape. The entire set was filmed over a 36hr period during which we had everything from brilliant sunshine through to thunderstorms and waterfalls on Uluru (a rare sight in the middle of the central Australian deserts). The camera was a Panasonic GS500 shot in 16x9 format. Post processing and NLE was undertaken using Adobe Premiere CS3. Cast: Grant VK5GR

Alaska - A trip along the Dalton Highway

This short film continues my series filmed during my Alaskan holiday in June/July 2008. This clip shows our journey from Fairbanks, AK almost to Prudhoe Bay and the north slope oil fields. In particular some of the more rustic and remote parts of Alaska can be seen in this movie. The Dalton Highway was originally built along the route of the Trans-Alaskan Oil Pipeline, which is regularly seen along the trip. The film was shot with a Sony HDR-HC9 HD Camcorder and was compiled using Adobe Premiere CS3. Cast: Grant VK5GR

Alaska - A trip to Denali National Park
from Vimeo / Nature in HD on May 11, 2009

In June 2008 my wife and I were fortunate enough to take a 2 week tour of Alaska. Part of our journey included a land tour from Anchorage to Denali by rail. Once there we undertook a scenic flight around Mt McKinley (known to the locals as Denali), as well as doing the bus tour through the park for some wildlife spotting. We were very fortunate with the weather and got to see both the mountain, and the wildlife, including a number of Grizzly Bears! On the technical side, shooting the wildlife in HD when they were a very long distance off (beyond the optical zoom of the camera even with the telephoto lens) meant that in post production, I was able to digitally zoom in and still get reasonable quality on some of the long distant animal shots. Coupled with the Mercali stabilisation plugin for Premiere CS3 it resolved the hand-held footage into something fairly watchable I feel. I am interested to hear other peoples opinions on this, particularly some of the bear shots. Cast: Grant VK5GR

Spectacular scenes from the Ilulissat ice fjord and the Greenland ice cap. These images were filmed during the 2006 Climate Change College, during which 6 students from the UK and the Netherlands ventured into the arctic wilderness to be trained as climate change ambassadors. Based on the experiences and knowledge gathered on several locations in Greenland, they launched various initiatives raising public awareness around the topic of climate change. In the future we will feature more stories from the Climate Change College. You can read more about the project on climatechangecollege.org. Special thanks to Marc Cornelissen for making this footage available. Music in this episode: Arcadia by Apparat. Check out icescapes.tv for more. Cast: icescapes, icentials and Liquid Earth

back beach

Some spare footage I had lying around from a recent trip to the North island of New Zealand. These were taken on Christmas Day 2008 on the "back beach" of New Plymouth. The sand, as you can see, is jet black and the colours of the sunset lent a prehistoric ambience to the scene. Some shots are too long I know, but I just couldn't bring myself to cut them. No colour correction has been used and all shots are taken with the support of my trusty monopod. There are a few where you can see the pattern of the focusing glass. That was purely user error; I accidentally bumped the aperture ring down to about f8 and didn't notice until halfway through shooting. I have yet to perfect the art of exporting video from FCP. I still get a washed out colour (the original looks 10 times better) and strange colour grading where the edges go dark. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! I import in at HDV50i (PAL) and export as a quicktime .mov file using Compressor at these settings (the screengrabs): hv20.com/showthread.php?t=8085 What am I doing wrong? My first video: vimeo.com/2186843 looks perfect. I have no idea how that one can turn out so well, and every video since suffers from washed out colour when exporting. Alaska - College Fjord and Glacier Bay National Park

In 2008 my wife and I travelled to Alaska. While there, we undertook a 7 day cruise from Seward to Vancouver (Canada) visiting in particular the tide water glaciers that abound through the area. College Fjord at sunrise and seeing glaciers "calving" (shedding ice when they reach the sea) in Glacier Bay National Park are spectacular sites. This was my first trip with the HD video camera (Sony HDR-HC9) and my first use of Adobe Premiere CS3 for NLE. It was all shot hand-held and I have used the Mercali image stabilisation plugin for Adobe Premiere to "de-shake it" a bit which has left some artefacts visible to those who look for them. Georgian Bay HD Timelapse

My first experiment with Time lapse. Shot while on vacation with my wife last summer on Georgian Bay in Ontario, Canada. I shot this using a firmware hack on a Canon point-and-shoot still camera. The time lapse is not perfect. The next one will be better. Things I learned: - Bring extra batteries - Choosing the best exposure for the next four hours is hard. - Turn off the LCD or the batteries won't make it. - If the tripod is light and there's wind, keep the tripod low. - Autofocus + tripod movement isn't a good combo in a time lapse, but you can't turn off autofocus on a point-and-shoot. - frame the shot for 16:9, so you don't lose anything when you crop. - set the image size just a little bigger than your intended final output. I forgot to do this, and was taking huge photos. I would have had twice as much time lapse if I'd remembered to adjust the image size. On the plus side, it made it possible to crop Cast: Kevin Anthony

Turøy

One hour west of Bergen, Norway, lies a small island called Turøy. Located west in Øygarden, it's one of the last stops before you hit Shetland Islands north of Scotland. The landscape is very typical for this region, and the weather was simply beautiful on this day. This was shot on the last day of Pass Over, on a very shaky tripod, which I now see is not worth the $30 I gave for it a few years back. Time to invest in a new one I think.
