One wire coil is connected to a radio, and another is connected to a speaker. The two coils are not connected to each other. The radio signal is transmitted through the induced magnetic field caused by the current in the wires. The signal is only received when there is a magnetic flux through the receiving coil, and thus no sound is heard when the coils are perpendicular to each other.

A solenoid enclosed in another solenoid is connected to a 12 volt battery. Also contained in the circuit is an iron contact switch connected to a spring arm, with a gap on one side of it. When the circuit is closed, the inner solenoid attracts the iron switch across the small gap. This breaks the circuit, making the switch move back to its original position, which closes the circuit again. Thus, the switch moves back and forth quickly, causing oscillations of high voltage in the outer solenoid. This high voltage causes sparks to jump the large gap between the ends of the outer solenoid. These sparks cause electromagnetic radiation, which is how telegraphs were originally transmitted wirelessly. Morse code can be transmitted by opening and closing the power source.This specific transmitter was made by the Marconi company, and is very much like the telegraph machine that would have been used on the Titanic. On a stormy Sunday (1st July 2007) and with central London experiencing a heightened security alert, I decided to head out to Alexandra Park - home of Alexandra Palace - with its views towards the distant towers in the city of London which is 6.5 miles (10 km) south of the park. In this episode, I take in a couple of shots of the palace building (these days not much to look at except for its circular rose window) and TV tower, then I turn the camera around to point south to central London. Alexandra Palace itself is no longer much to look at. A fire in the 1980s destroyed much of the building and it has only been partially rebuilt. However the historic BBC TV studios and (still operational) TV transmitter still exist. The tower was the first in the world to transmit TV pictures, from 1936 (for more information see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexandra_Palace ).

Last night we implanted a transmitter inside a young female leopard, Khayeni. She's been followed for the last 3 months with a radio collar. This was removed tonight and a new transmitter implanted in her stomach cavity. the Vet also believes she is pregnant.
