Cute and Cuddly 'Hellboy II' Trailer
from Cinematical July 07, 2008
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Movie Marketing, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips In a movie season of superheroes, it is no easy task to stand out -- even if you're bright red with a giant stone hand and a tail. But I dare you to find one other superhero out there with as much swagger and love for kittens as Hellboy. Check out this new trailer for the fantasy-action flick Hellboy II: The Golden Army above which, conveniently, poses as a helpful public service announcement from Hellboy (Ron Perlman) himself ... along with his trademark kitty. In Guillermo del Toro's second installment of the comic book adaptation, the uneasy truce between humanity and 'the invisible realm' has come to an end. A ruthless leader with the ability to walk in both worlds has gathered a mythical 'Golden Army' to, in so many words, kick ass and take names. So who else can we turn to other than Hellboy and the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Development to save the world once again? Del Toro started the first wave of viral sites for the film with HetFet and Squeaky Clean Waste Management back in April. But with the exception of hardcore fans, I don't think many of us got on board with the campaign. In the end, it was a better idea to have Red make the rounds with the American Gladiators, Chuck, and an appearance on The Actor's Studio with James Lipton. My personal favorite is his audition for mun2, but I'll leave it up to you to decide which one you like best. Hellboy II: The Golden Army opens this Friday. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Red-Band 'Mirrors' Trailer Gets Gruesome
from Cinematical July 01, 2008
Filed under: Horror, Thrillers, Mystery & Suspense, 20th Century Fox, Movie Marketing, Trailers and Clips Not three weeks ago, I made first mention of a brief and bland teaser for the forthcoming horror film, Mirrors. Now, along comes IGN Movies with a red-band trailer that, at first, didn't do much for me. Blah blah blah, Jack Bauer as security guard for old department store, blah blah, former guard grew obsessed with surrounding mirrors, blah blah -- look, even Amy Smart is yawning after all that exposition. Oh, did I say 'yawning'? I meant 'tearing off her own jaw'. Yes, while we still seem to be saddled with a fairly ridiculous premise that's seen better and worse days, there's modest comfort to be taken that the R rating ain't exactly being shied away from. Let's face facts here, people: all it takes sometimes is a couple of nifty death scenes to make movies like this that much easier to stomach (well, some might argue the opposite). Directed by Alexandre Aja and starring Kiefer Sutherland, you can see Mirrors (bah-dum-cha!) on August 15th. Permalink | Email this | Comments

EXCLUSIVE: Clip from 'The Stone Angel'
from Cinematical July 01, 2008
Filed under: Drama, Fandom, Trailers and Clips Cinematical has just received this exclusive clip from The Stone Angel, starring the legendary Ellen Burstyn as a woman looking to resolve the memories of her past as she nears the end of her life. Joining her on this emotional (yet somewhat comedic, as you see above) journey are a cast that includes Dylan Baker, Ellen Page, Christine Horne and Cole Hauser. The film is based on the novel by Margaret Laurence, and is directed (and adapted) by Kari Skogland. In the clip above, Burstyn, who plays a woman named Hagar, is found passed out in a shack on the beach. When her son Marvin (Baker) arrives to remove her from this situation, their exchange is classic. Check it out above, and go see The Stone Angel when it hits theaters on July 11. Dominos Pizza Offers Free But Greasy Batman Costume ... and New Trailer!
from Cinematical July 01, 2008
Filed under: Action, Comedy, Warner Brothers, Movie Marketing, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips I can't wait for Halloween, when I'm going to be dressing up as Batman, courtesy of Dominos. Among the pizza chain's many tie-ins with this summer's The Dark Knight are these cool pizza boxes, which include separate parts to a cardboard-costume whole. Yes, you'll have to order a number of pizzas to complete your outfit, and there will likely be grease stains all over your utility belt, but your other option is to actually buy a costume ... and go hungry. Actually, I just remembered that I'm going to be out of the country on Halloween. But when I return, I want to see lots of you Cinematical readers fashioned in Dominos-catered Batman costumes and taking part in our annual costume contest. In the meantime, be sure to check out the Dominos Dark Knight vault, which features details on everything from a special Gotham City meal deal to multiple sweepstakes. And apparently if you order a pizza through the website, you'll gain access to other goodies, like clips, wallpapers, artwork and an exclusive new trailer ... which you may or may not be able to watch after the jump.Continue reading Dominos Pizza Offers Free But Greasy Batman Costume ... and New Trailer! Will Smith, Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman Go Unscripted
from Cinematical June 30, 2008
Filed under: Action, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Trailers and Clips Who is Hancock, where is he from ... and does he know how to get jiggy wit it? (Also, why does Jason Bateman have sparkles on his face?) Yes, it's that time again -- Moviefone has unveiled another one of their fabulous Unscripted chats, and it's a tasty one. In support of their new film Hancock, watch Will Smith, Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman interview each other using your questions and some of their own. Usually these Unscripted sessions come with only two people, so when they've got the whole m nage trois thing going on, you definitely want to watch. Additionally, above you will find a clip that was left on the cutting room floor and then somehow swiped up by us janitors here at Cinematical. Watch as Smith and Theron discuss kissing one another, while Bateman chimes in with his own quirky two cents. I won't spoil the rest for you because I'm cool like that (and smooth like that, and dope like that, and chill like that) -- so head on over to Moviefone to see the rest. Hancock hits theaters on July 2. Permalink | Email this | Comments

Bond is Back! 'Quantum of Solace' Gets a Trailer!
from Cinematical June 30, 2008
Filed under: Action, Drama, Mystery & Suspense, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips "When you can't tell your friends from your enemies, it's time to go." The first trailer for Quantum of Solace (aka the next James Bond film) has just arrived online (watch above or over on Moviefone in glorious HD), and I'm totally hooked. First thing I noticed is there seems to be quite a bit more action this time around, including what looks to be a pretty slick speedboat scene. Like in Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace (which picks up right where Royale left off) appears to leave us with a Bond (Daniel Craig) who still can't differentiate between what's personal and what's simply business. Once again, M (Judi Dench) continues to chase after Bond, who's still somewhat of a loose cannon. Starring Mathieu Amalric, Olga Kurylenko, Gemma Arterton and Jeffrey Wright, Quantum of Solace finds Bond on the hunt for the organization responsible for the death of his shady ex-girlfriend, Vesper Lynd. His mission eventually leads to an environmentalist (Amalric) hell bent on taking over the country's water supply. Those interested can check out the full, official synopsis after the jump. Quantum of Solace arrives in theaters on November 7th, 2008. What do you think of the trailer?Continue reading Bond is Back! 'Quantum of Solace' Gets a Trailer! Permalink | Email this | Comments

Trailer Park: Tales To Horrify
from Cinematical June 27, 2008
Filed under: Comedy, Horror, Trailer Trash, Trailers and Clips I love a good horror flick, but it's rare that I can find five trailers with some kind of connection to horror worth talking about in a single week. Huzzah! This is just such a week. Take a look at these Tales to Horrify. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead This light-hearted take on vampirism reminds me a little of Roman Polanski's The Fearless Vampire Killers, with the "theater of vampires" bit making me think of Interview With The Vampire. I gotta say this looks awesome. An unemployed actor played by Jake Hoffman (son of Dustin) lands a job directing a bizarre off-Broadway version of Hamlet. The play has actually been written by a Romanian vampire, and things get complicated when the lead actor suddenly becomes one of the undead as well. Ralph Macchio is in there too playing a mobster/vampire hunter and, according to Monika's post from a few months ago, Sean Lennon has written the score. This looks like a classy production all the way through. Mirrors Mirrors are everywhere, but there's still something inherently creepy about them. Kiefer Sutherland plays an ex-cop and some kind of malevolent force is using mirrors as a gateway into his home to threaten him and his family. There are some creepy moments here, but I'm not sure about this one. These days I see Sutherland and I can't get past his Jack Bauer character, and that kid in the trailer is trying way too hard to sound cute. This is also from the director of High Tension, which is not a score in the plus column for me. The trailer is pretty slight, so I'll have to see more. Here's what William thought. 'Harold' Deals with Kid Pattern Baldness in New Trailer
from Cinematical June 27, 2008
Filed under: Comedy, Independent, Cinematical Indie, Trailers and Clips Well, it looks like we can forget about Harold being a cliche, like I feared. Above you can check out the amusing trailer for the film about a kid who has male-pattern baldness at the ripe young age of 14. It looks like it could be a fun ride. I was thinking that the kid just had a bald spot, but no, he's got one big shiny dome on the top of his head. My question: At that point, why not shave it all off? Spencer Breslin plays the follicly challenged kid, and he really reminds me of Michael Cera, just a little rounder. Even better, it looks like Cuba Gooding Jr. is giving a performance with much less of the family-film mindset that he's become known for. (It's about time!) But those two aren't the only names in this pic -- Ally Sheedy, Nikki Blonsky, Fred Willard, Rachel Dratch, Nicky Katt, Chris Parnell, Colin Quinn... The film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11. Will you make the trek to see it? Permalink | Email this | Comments

Stars in Rewind: Female Assassins
from Cinematical June 27, 2008
Filed under: Action, Trailers and Clips, Stars in Rewind Tonight, the screens will be full of James McAvoy and his Wanted co-stars bending bullet paths and pulling off funky tricks usually relegated to superheroes. The storyline sounds a lot like The Matrix, but luckily that also means keeping one of the previous flick's best features: a tough-arse female mentor. Tonight, Angelina Jolie will put aside her drama and revel in toughness and assassin death, but she's not the only one to do so. Before Jolie took on the role of Fox, Uma Thurman rocked as The Bride. Above is my favorite scene from the first volume of Kill Bill -- the insidious whistling hospital scene. Considering all the NSFW elements of the two films, I figured this whistling teaser would be best. (But if you want more violence, watch them fight here.) It's Daryl Hannah at her finest, and Uma Thurman getting a nice bout of shut-eye. Of course, there are a million different films that somehow tie into Wanted. If you're looking for more mainstream, successful action, you might want to check out Christopher Campbell's list of top critically acclaimed action flicks over at Spout. The Last Rewind Answer: Believe it or not, while consensus has picked Marlon Brando as the man who wasn't considered for Fear and Loathing, it was actually Dustin Hoffman. 'Swing Vote' Jumps on Viral Bandwagon with Campaign Commercials
from Cinematical June 27, 2008
Filed under: Comedy, Movie Marketing, Politics, Trailers and Clips I know that studio attempts at "viral" internet marketing are a dime a dozen these days, but you should watch this. It's funny. Swing Vote, due August 1st, presents the wildly improbable scenario that a United States presidential election comes down to one politically apathetic New Mexican's choice, leading the candidates -- an incumbent Republican played by Kelsey Grammer and a Democratic challenger played by Dennis Hopper -- to converge on his tiny hometown and court like they've never courted before. The obvious marketing hook: a campaign ad! Actually four of them, two by each candidate, all targeting Kevin Costner's Bud Johnson. My favorite one is above; the rest are here and here. I like these because they're done with some nuance; I particularly enjoyed the parodies of real-life candidates' disingenuous tendency to "swing to the middle," decimating whatever convictions they previously claimed to hold to pander to "moderate" swing voters. The folks behind these videos take that to its absurd conclusion, of course, with the Republican uncomfortably embracing gay marriage and the Democrat haranguing his opponent about not being pro-life enough. The latter's the video I've embedded at the top of the post -- it cracked me up. [hat tip: Cinema Blend] Permalink | Email this | Comments

EXCLUSIVE: Two Clips from 'The Last Mistress'
from Cinematical June 27, 2008
Filed under: Drama, Foreign Language, Romance, IFC, Trailers and Clips Cinematical has just received two exclusive clips from The Last Mistress (watch one above, and the other after the jump). Based on the novel by Jules-Am d e Barbey d'Aurevilly, Mistress comes to us from writer-director Catherine Breillat (Fat Girls, Romance) whose film's are known for carrying distinct personal and sexual flavor. Reporting from the San Francisco International Film Festival, Cinematical's Jeffrey M. Anderson called The Last Mistress "the most enjoyable of the three Breillat films I've seen," and says "It works on a gut level of sexual turmoil that her other films never approach ..." Back when Cinematical premiered the poster for this film, Monika provided this description: "Asia Argento stars as Vellini, a courtesan who has lust-filled and violent forays with Ryno (Fu'ad A t Aattou) for years. But then he leaves her to marry Hermangarde (Roxane Mesquida), and she's not prepared to say goodbye." I'd see this based on the Breillat/Argento pairing alone, as one can only imagine the amount of devilish spice contained within. The Last Mistress arrives in theaters today, June 27, in NYC at the IFC Center and Lincoln Plaza Cinemas, as well as On Demand. Look for it to expand in the coming weeks.Continue reading EXCLUSIVE: Two Clips from 'The Last Mistress' Permalink | Email this | Comments

'Transformers 2 Update: New Videos of Frenzy and ... is that Beetlejuice?
from Cinematical June 25, 2008
Filed under: Action, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Images, Trailers and Clips Right now, there are people spending every minute of every day stalking the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen production, searching for the next photo of a blurry Shia LaBeouf standing around or what have you. Every day, we here at Cinematical receive tons of Transformers nonsense -- but instead of throwing it at you left and right, we figured why not collect it and dish it all at one time? Anyway, Transformers Live has nabbed a photo of what appears to be Beetlejuice from The Howard Stern Show hanging in the background on set. No word if the little weird guy actually has a part in the film (or if Bay is keeping him around to torture for his own amusement), though I'm sure your anticipation meter just went up significantly. In addition to the Beetlejuice news, two videos have also surfaced online. One shows them shooting a scene with Frenzy on top of a car, clawing at the front window, with Sam (LaBeouf) and friends inside. The other shows folks like LaBeouf and Megan Fox stretching from afar. Hot! And it comes with this ridiculous song about stretching. Even hotter! (Both videos included after the jump ... but beware of total hotness!) Production on the sequel has officially moved to Princeton University, where Transformers Live also has photos and more videos of filming. Nothing too life-altering, but if you're itching to see and learn more about the film, I guess that's the place to start. Finally, IESB tells us actress-comedian Kym Whitley has nabbed a small role in the film. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen hits theaters on June 26, 2009.Continue reading 'Transformers 2 Update: New Videos of Frenzy and ... is that Beetlejuice? Permalink | Email this | Comments

EXCLUSIVE: Clip from Josh Hartnett's 'August'
from Cinematical June 25, 2008
Filed under: Drama, Independent, Movie Marketing, Trailers and Clips Cinematical has just received this exclusive clip from the film August, starring Josh Hartnett, Adam Scott, Naomie Harris and ... David Bowie! Directed by Austin Chick (XX/XY), August tells of two brothers who fight to keep their dotcom start-up company afloat in August 2001, one month before the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In the clip above, Hartnett looks to be meeting with some of his advisers after his company's stock takes a massive hit and drops below a dollar. Running out of options, he may have to risk a lot more than the money in his wallet to save this puppy. But will he? August originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year before making stops in Seattle, Brooklyn and eventually Manhattan, where it opens on July 11. The Trailer for 'RocknRolla' is Here!
from Cinematical June 25, 2008
Filed under: Action, Comedy, Thrillers, Warner Brothers, Movie Marketing, Images, Trailers and Clips This makes my week! Empire has the exclusive debut of the new RocknRolla trailer -- click over there to watch it, and see new stills. It is dizzyingly awesome -- and there is way more going on than just a shady real estate deal. A lucky painting, a rock star who is presumed dead, American thugs, Russian mafia, British gangsters, and lots of sex and blood to tie it all together. It really looks like a return to form for Guy Ritchie, which is certainly what we were all hoping for. But you all know I'm disgustingly biased, because this trailer is just full of Gerard Butler. He's shooting, running, stripping off his shirt, and doing all sorts of sexy things. I'm not at all sure what the heck he is doing trussed up on that bed, but it can't be good (my mind will not be at ease until I know what is going on there). RocknRolla comes out in theatres October 31st, but the UK gets it September 5th. Now where did I put my passport ... Permalink | Email this | Comments

Stars in Rewind: An American Werewolf in London
from Cinematical June 21, 2008
Filed under: Trailers and Clips, Stars in Rewind NSFW: Foul language. Recently, I mentioned my neverending plan to see The Goddess of 1967. There are others on the list as well, like Stalag 17, a laserdisc which still sits at the foot of my bed, waiting to be watched. But, luckily, I can be happy with my cinematic to-do list without much guilt. Maybe there's a shocked face here or there from a friend, but that's it. The same cannot be said for Diablo Cody, who just blogged about one of her to-watch movies, and how she got one of the most embarrassing, yet truly cool reasons to stop putting it off. She's never seen An American Werewolf in London, and Edgar Wright gave her a copy for her birthday with this written on the front: "Diablo, please watch my movie. John Landis." It was written by the man himself, and not Edgar pretending. That's the ultimate motivation. So, in honor of embarrassment in the face of classic filmmakers, here's a Stars in Rewind for Landis' classic. Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Honest-to-Goodness 'Benjamin Button' Trailer!
from Cinematical June 20, 2008
Filed under: Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Paramount, Warner Brothers, Brad Pitt, Movie Marketing, Oscar Watch, Trailers and Clips After enduring a moderate amount of fuss, our devoted readers can now click here for the Apple-exclusive English-language trailer for Brad Pitt and David Fincher's long-in-the-works The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Apparently made available only in the HD format to correspond with Fincher's expectedly demanding standards, the trailer is indeed that much more striking for it. To borrow my own words for it: "...while the sparse dialogue clues us in on the surreal nature of the events unfolding, the bigger selling point is the scope with which director Fincher and star Brad Pitt find themselves working. It's as if Fincher tapped into his inner Jeunet, and as for Pitt... well, between this and that Burn After Reading trailer, the man's looking to have one hell of a year, and with any luck, so will audiences." Benjamin Button is scheduled to hit theaters this Christmas, and when the next trailer for it comes around, we'll be sure to make mention of it once we're certain that everyone can actually watch the thing. 'Wall*E' Goes Hardcore in Final Trailer
from Cinematical June 20, 2008
Filed under: Animation, Sci-Fi E clips have been hitting the Internet about every two seconds in the past two weeks. I haven't watched a single one of them, because I don't want to see a second more of this movie until the lights go down in the theatre. But I couldn't resist watching, and posting, this new trailer from IGN. If you do not want to see even five seconds of new footage, avoid it, but it doesn't feel too spoiler-ish of a trailer. Instead, it is a wicked spoof of every post-apocalyptic trailer made in the last ten years, but it casts our cute robots as action heroes. Or at least Eve is -- that is one tough girl! There is a bit of "Princess Leia on the Death Star" about her. I'm not sure if this movie is actually as explosion packed as the trailer implies, or if it is just edited really well. Clearly, someone at Pixar is having way too much fun. Wall*E opens June 27th. Permalink | Email this | Comments

Steve Coogan is One Sexy Jesus!
from Cinematical June 19, 2008
Filed under: Comedy, Trailers and Clips To be, or not to be Hamlet 2? I was a really bummed when James Rocchi gave Hamlet 2 an iffy review from Sundance this year. I love Shakespeare, and I love Steve Coogan, so the project seemed like a wacky* dream come true. I'm still holding out hope that I'll respectfully disagree with him when the film hits theaters on August 22, but either way, I will always have Steve Coogan's sexy Jesus. You might remember Erik mentioning "Rock Me, Sexy Jesus" in April. Yes, this is a musical number in the film, which is part of the crappy drama teacher's (Coogan) politically incorrect sequel to Hamlet. And now Yahoo has got most of the song available to check out -- from Be Kind Rewind's Melonie Diaz and her co-actresses singing on a bed, to Jesus coming down from the ceiling and getting his groove on. Seeing Coogan dance around in a white tank and tight jeans is just plain wonderful. What do you think of Coogan's rockin' sexy Jesus? *Edited Permalink | Email this | Comments

'The Wackness' Gets a Red Band Trailer
from Cinematical June 19, 2008
Filed under: Comedy, Drama, Independent, Sony Classics, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Trailers and Clips Here it is, the groove, slightly transformed ... and another trailer for The Wackness has hit the net. I'm not sure why folks were all over Sony Pictures Classics when they picked this flick up at Sundance, because, not for nothing, but they've promoted the hell out of it ever since. This is, like, the fifth or sixth trailer I'm seeing ... for a Sundance film! They've done viral videos, photos, posters -- props definitely go out to the fine folks over at SPC, and now it's our turn to tell all you crackerjacks to go see this dope show when it hits theaters on July 3rd. Featuring one of the best soundtracks I've heard in quite some time, The Wackness tells of the quirky relationship between a pot dealer (Josh Peck) and his therapist (Ben Kingsley) -- both of whom have no friends and no sex life. There's a cute summer crush (Olivia Thirlby), an ex wife who's barely "there" (Famke Janssen) and a hippie chick (Mary-Kate Olsen) who likes to swing her arms a lot. The film takes place in 1994, so if you grew up in the '90s, there's a ton here to relate to. I had fun with it, I know a lot of other people had fun with it, so if you're just chillin' over Fourth of July weekend, take it over to the theater and settle in for some dopeness, er, wackness. Red Band trailer (which is also available over at IGN in a larger size) posted after the jump due to random drug use and a little foul language.Continue reading 'The Wackness' Gets a Red Band Trailer Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Action, Comedy, Fandom, Trailers and Clips "There's a lot of talk about my ass." -- Steve Carell on becoming an action star in Get Smart. Tyler Durden(s) Sing About Male "Packages"
from Cinematical June 16, 2008
Filed under: Music & Musicals, Fandom, Trailers and Clips I always thought those Fight Club public service announcements were all kinds of awesome -- Ed Norton talking about proper movie etiquette, and the fact that no one has the right to touch us in our bathing suit area, and Brad Pitt discussing the emergency exits and drinking your own urine. Whenever the real movie theater announcements would pop up, I'd wish it was the Ed and Brad versions instead. But oh, the above clip completely beats the other two. Apparently this has made the rounds before, but I've never heard of it, so in case you haven't either, check out the song above. However, be warned: This is a song about penises, so if you don't want to hear Brad Pitt and Ed Norton singing about them at work, don't click! But it would be such a waste, because it's flipping brilliant. It's definitely the best twist on words that I've heard in a while. (Check out the lyrics after the jump ...) Asian Cinema Scene: Spicy Thai 'Somtum'
from Cinematical June 14, 2008
Filed under: Action, Foreign Language, Cinematical Indie, Trailers and Clips Have you heard about the new action movie from a 7-foot tall Australian wrestling strongman turned actor? Me neither, until I read Wise Kwai's Thai Film Journal and learned about Somtum, starring Nathan Jones. I don't recall Jones (AKA Megaman, AKA Colossus) from his small role in Troy, but I did notice him squaring off against Asian action heroes Jet Li (Fearless) and Tony Jaa (The Protector); he was a frightening, if briefly-seen, nemesis in both those movies. Jones gets to play the good guy in Somtum. His character, Barney Rubble Emerald, is a down on his luck gentle giant when he crosses paths with two young women: Katen (Narawat Techarattanaprasert), an orphaned street hustler, and Dokya (Sasisa Jindamanee), a tiny Muay Thai fighting chick. Dokya's mother sells somtum, a spicy, chili-fueled papaya salad, and when Barney naively eats too much at once, it drives him temporarily insane and he tears apart the food stand. To atone for his sins, he learns Muay Thai and becomes an underground fighter. He gets mixed up with crazed foreigners and stolen diamonds. Wise Kwai says somtum, the food, is a spicy treat best shared with friends, "and Somtum, the movie, is a lot of fun, too. And, yes, you should see it with friends, and marvel at this action-packed, oftentimes silly, but also very sweet tale." The great Panna Rittikrai choreographed the action. Until a DVD appears somewhere, check out the trailer, which looks hella fun. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The First Poster for Daniel Craig's 'Defiance'
from Cinematical June 13, 2008
Filed under: Drama, War, Daniel Craig, Paramount Vantage, Trailers and Clips Maybe it's just me, but is it really a good idea to start promoting a Holocaust drama smack dab in the middle of the summer movie season? I guess you can't blame the makers of Defiance for wanting to start their promotions a little early, though. The new poster for Daniel Craig's WWII flick has been released (click image to enlarge), and it is about as dark and sombre as you might expect. Defiance was written and directed by Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond), and tells the true life story of the Bielski partisans. The Bielskis were three brothers who escaped into the Belarus forests while on the run from the Nazis and banded together to form a resistance group to save other Jews during WWII. Jamie Bell, Liev Schreiber, and Craig (who is the only face that made it to the poster) portray the three brothers, and The Mist's Alexa Davalos also stars as a fellow escapee and love interest for Craig. Defiance wrapped production back in 2007 (as we all know, Craig has been a tad busy working on a certain spy film ever since) and there hasn't been much hoopla surrounding the film -- with the exception of a small trailer release back in January. So even though the next three months are all about blockbusting fun, we can't forget that Oscar season is merely months away; I'm sure Zwick hasn't. Defiance will arrive in theaters on December 19th, 2008. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

'Death Race' Trailer Hits
from Cinematical June 13, 2008
Filed under: Action, Fandom, Trailers and Clips The first trailer for Paul "The Other" Anderson's Death Race (loose) remake has arrived online over at Yahoo, and it feels like a mix between the video game Twisted Metal and The Running Man. Jason Statham stars as a prison inmate who's recruited by the warden (Joan Allen) to drive in a, well, death race where, if he wins, he gains his freedom. Throw in a bunch of seedy side characters (played by folks like Ian McShane and Tyrese Gibson) and you get what looks to be a decent late-summer action flick that's like the Mad Max version of The Fast and the Furious ... or something like that. Seriously, though, they should've just called this one Twisted Metal and adapted the popular video game -- then at least we would've gotten that freaky clown truck thingy. Oh well. Death Race crashes into theaters on August 22. What do you think of the trailer? Permalink | Email this | Comments

EXCLUSIVE: Clip from Guy Maddin's 'My Winnipeg'
from Cinematical June 13, 2008
Filed under: Comedy, Documentary, Independent, Cinematical Indie, Trailers and Clips "Winnipeg... Winnipeg... Winnipeg... Snowing, sleepwalking Winnipeg..." When Guy Maddin's My Winnipeg premiered at TIFF, you got a review, then came the exclusive and awesome poster, and then the trailer. Now Cinematical is happy to share the exclusive clip above. If you remember the picture attached to the review, well, this is more of the same -- those knights on a great white chessboard. Or, to be more specific, the frozen-in-the-lake horse heads after the fire of Whittier Park. It's strange, unsettling, and weirdly funny. A "docu-fantasia" goodbye letter, My Winnipeg is a pseudo documentary where real facts about Winnipeg are intermingled with Guy Maddin's vision of his past, as the fictional Guy, played by Darcy Fehr, heads out of town. Dead dads under rugs, a Golden Boy pageant scandal, sleepwalkers, demolition, a strange and eerie mother played by Ann Savage -- all are present in My Winnipeg, and all of it is damned funny. The film is now playing in theaters. Permalink | Email this | Comments
