How do you think the traditional media is reacting and growing their business? Are they keeping pace, falling behind or simply stuck with their heads in the sand? Following is an amazing roundtable discussion titled, A conversation about print journalism in the digital age, from Charlie Rose. It features Thomas Curley (President and Chief Executive Officer of the Associated Press) along with Arianna Huffington (from The Huffington Post). This is a great 18 minute conversation: Tags: ap arianna huffington associated press business charlie rose citizen journalism digital media google huffington post journalism newspaper print journalism publishing industry thomas curley traditional media

On Digital Media, Episode #57: Bumpy
from On Digital Media on January 24, 2008
Duration: 2736
Duration: 2736
In this episode John Federico, Steve Hatch and Ken Gellman discuss: Events: Steve may be attending the Web 2.0 Conference in San Francisco in April while John is planning to attend Web 2.0 NY on January 31st to see our friend Craig Calder of Yovia speak on the topic of monetizing social media and word of mouth. Yahoo s continued troubles. The New York Post (always an accurate barometer of happenings in new media. Ahem ) reports that takeover candidates include AOL, AT re not so sure how well the model is working for them... Ken would have commented, but he accidentally muted his mic. Not surprising, digital music sales are up and CD sales are down. The problem? The intensity of growth in digital is not going to supplant the losses in physical retail. Last.fm to offer free music streaming of 3.5 million tracks on-demand. No wating. Unsigned artists will be paid directly by Last.fm and the record companies will share in the advertising revenue. This will be a model to follow. Are you bored with the included 58 songs in Rock Band? You can buy more at $2 each on the Xbox Live Marketplace - costing more than 100% more than a track the iTunes Store or the Amazon MP3 Store. Steve points out that if the music industry were a bit more creative, they could find plenty of additional outlets for packaged music. Who would - who could - who should - buy the New York Times, should the company be in play? Murdoch? Should the government save it? We think not John Ellis thinks it should be Google. John Battelle thinks that it should be Google.org. Steve thinks that a Google/New York Times marriage would be too much of a culture shock for the folks at the Times. John thinks not - the NYT has been making numerous investments including its most recent investment in Automattic. Verizon Wireless announces its first Open Developer Conference, March 19th - 20th WPP invested in Integrated Media Measurement, a company that uses software on cell phones to measure TV and Radio consumption. SO much better than Arbitron s Portable People Meter approach. Of course, neither solution does anything for user generated content as you ll have to pay substantiable dollars to work with either of these companies. Journey (wow. remember Journey?) has found its new lead singer. On YouTube. Don t stop believin Our music is Democracy from Alexander Blu. On Digital Media, Episode #56: New Tee Vee
from On Digital Media on January 17, 2008
Duration: 3117
Duration: 3117
In this first episode of 2008, John Federico, Chia-Lin Simmons and Steve Hatch discuss: John attended Jeff Pulver s Social Media Breakfast in New York last week, with Real-Time Social Tagging. Interesting Chia-Lin is planning to attend the Girl Geeks Dinner in San Francisco on January 31st and possibly Lunch 2.0 CES was all about the TV s this year Google and Panasonic have signed a deal that will enable content from Google s services - like YouTube videos and Picasa Photo Albums - to be displayed on Panasonic TV s. There was no mention of the use of Android software in the deal. The Seismic Shift in Online Video: viewers and advertisers are moving online. YouTube traffic is up 8% since the strike began Sony s Clicker (formerly Grouper) has seen a doubling of registered users Chrysler is shifting its advertising budgets to live sports and the Internets - and out of prime time programs. TV writers and producers are going there too: NewTeeVee reports that a group of striking writers who call themselves Virtual Artists are seeking $30 million to produce content for online and digital distribution. Chia-Lin s friend Dylan Otto Krider was nominated as an Amazon Short Story Finalist. Go vote for him here and help him land a book deal with Penguin Publishing. HD-DVD is Dead! And really, so is Blu-Ray thanks to Apple and others. Steve thinks that broadband and online distribution will make the format wars irrelevant. Is he right? Apple has secured downloadable rental rights from all the major movie studios - an uprecendented deal. Did they just sound the death knell for Netflix? Was Netflix s announcement of unlimited online movie viewing an attempt to pre-empt Apple s rental efforts? Engadget has a matrix that helps you determine what you can and cannot do in the Apple movie rental framework based on your hardware and software. Apple also announced the MacBook Air. Chia-Lin nearly drooled on herself while looking at it. John thinks it s an amazing machine but is mildly disappointed in it as he would have preferred a replacement for the 12 Powerbook. Time Warner Cable want to start charging fees based on individual usage for its cable modem customers. Who came up with that bright idea!? We think it will hinder the adoption of new media which may be what the cable company wants, anyway. Jaman.com will be distributing their content to TiVo subscribers. The Economist has released the 2008 Media Industry Forecast (PDF): for the first time ever, the web will outperform radio. That s Huuuuuuge. Steve asks: When will television start to see a decline in the total advertisers dollars flowing into the medium? SAVE SCRABULOUS! On Digital Media, Episode #55: 2007 Year in Review, 2008 Predictions
from On Digital Media on December 27, 2007
Duration: 3201
Duration: 3201
In this episode John Federico, Chia-Lin Simmons, Ken Gellman and Steve Hatch discuss the top stories of 2007 and make (gasp!) predictions for digital media in 2008. The first BIG THEME for 2007 was Openness. (Is that even a word? It is now ) We think the iPhone - the phone with the closed operating system - was one of the biggest contributors to the Openness theme in 2007. How so? Listen Steve thinks that Google is more responsible for the proclaimed Openness of Verizon Wireless network, more so than the iPhone. We all gang up on him. Big media began to appear more like user generated media with the addition of podcasts, blogs and other types of new media. Read/Write Web thinks it was also the year of RSS. We can t disagree. Which lead us to . API s as another demonstration of the Openness theme. If companies didn t literally open themselves up, they provided access in the form of open API s. Of course, we re talking about the Facebook API and Google s Open Social API for social networks. NO DRM - or, the trend toward delivering purchased music downloads in mp3 format - was HUGE in representing the Openness theme. The second BIG THEME for 2007 centers on The Tipping Point for Digital Media The television writers strike exemplifies this. Their primary negotiating point? Digital media royalties. The studios are holding their position, saying that there s no money to share. If there s no money in it, why is Viacom suing YouTube for $1 Billion dollars? The decline in advertising revenues in traditional media is massive - and the money is all going into digital media. Predictions for 2008. Wanna know the answers to these questions? Listen John predicts that On Digital Media will be acquired by TechCrunch for $10 Million Dollars. Or a case of wine. (We re reasonable negotiators.) Will we see a Google Android-based handset in 2008? Will it be sold by a carrier or as an unlocked GSM device? Will on-demand media - whether premium or ad-supported - become a worthy competitor to traditional media distribution? In the coming economic slowdown, will digital media catch a cold, or just sneeze? Will the Amazon Kindle replace all forms of reading material, freeing children from scoliosis and the burden of textbooks? Our music is Democracy from Alexander Blu. On Digital Media, Episode #54: A Media Circus
from On Digital Media on December 06, 2007
Duration: 3384
Duration: 3384
In this episode John Federico, Ken Gellman, Steve Hatch and special guest Adam Broitman of Morpheus Media discuss: Adam recently attended the 2007 iMedia Agency Summit where he spoke on the topic of MythBusters along with Garrick Schmitt of Avenue A / Razorfish and Mark Silva of Real Branding. Like most interactive advertising conferences these days, many of the discussions devolved into a discussion of Facebook s Beacon advertising program. We review the Beacon program and why it s caused such a stir, Mark Zuckerberg s apology for it s rollout and whether or not there s actually value for the consumer in this model. Unlike many advertisers, Coke isn t bailing on Facebook s Beacon program. Then again, who care s if your friends know that you bought a Coke or like Coke or whatever it is you would do online with a consumer packaged good other than buy it. According to the IAB, internet advertising revenues reached and all-time high of $5.2 billion in Q3 2007. Adam asks on his blog, Big Media: Getting Too Big Or In Big Trouble?/Google: Big Media? . We talk about the FCC s Kevin Martin s proposal to revamp media ownership regulations in the top 20 U.S. media markets and the effect it could have on both traditional and new media. When an algorithm becomes an editorial voice (a la Google) will it fall under FCC regulation? Verizon Wireless is going to open its network to any device that meets its technical standards while AT s the most open . Sounds like a schoolyard brawl. Which handset manufacturer benefits most from this fight for openess? Nokia? Apple? .The Open Handset Alliance? Steve asks, Who is going to have the greater longer term impact on the wireless industry: Google (and Android) or Apple? We have a diversity of opinions. We comment on Eric Rochow s adventuring spirit in his quest to visit Studio 1A. When will he be back? Our music is Democracy from Alexander Blu. On Digital Media, Episode# 53: Kindling
from On Digital Media on November 29, 2007
Duration: 3505
Duration: 3505
In this episode John Federico, Ken Gellman and Steve Hatch discuss: Shout out to loyal ODM listener Adam Broitman for being so patient with our technical difficulties Christmas came early for John, who just received his Kindle . We debate it s merits and foibles in a classic ODM-style smack down. Bottom line: John likes it. (NOTE: John eluded that the Sony Reader has less than 3,000 titles - it s probably more than that, but still not equal to Amazon s 90,000 titles for the Kindle. John also indicated that the Blog titles are listed under the experimental menu. That s innacurate.) John was invited to a dinner by the investment banking division of a large U.S. bank. Of the 50+ attendees, most were buy-side or sell-side analysts. There were 6 to 8 of us from various sectors of the media business. These are the questions they grilled us on in an open discussion format over dinner. 2008: Recession or not? If so, which category or categories of advertisers will be more resilient? Which will be weaker? Which media will be more resilient? Which will be weaker? How long will it take television advertisers to pull their money out and put into other media that will deliver on their GRP (reach) goals, especially given the writer s strike? Google: Friend or Foe to the Media Industry? Where do you see advertisers moving their money right now? Mssrs Gellman and Hatch give their responses to these questions, followed by John s responses and finally, followed by what John heard from the people who were at the dinner event. Thanks to everyone in attendance at dinner for inspiring this show. Our closing music is Democracy from Alexander Blu. On Digital Media, Episode #52: Attention Rules
from On Digital Media on November 15, 2007
Duration: 2993
Duration: 2993
In this episode John Federico, Steve Hatch and Ken Gellman chat about: Ken, looking very Canadian and he finally has a Facebook profile! *gasp* John is planning to attend Convergence 2007: The future of Advertising, Communications and Media on December 3rd in NYC. Papa John s Pizza now accepts orders via SMS! John rejoices! Ken thinks we should create the OpenTable of pizza delivery for local shops. Social networkers reach out more using SMS than on the web. Is that because SMS is such a killer app or does it portend the mobile future? The future will be Mobilized! Especially for shy teens and especially since they re no longer using email. Ken thinks that all of this text-based communication makes the phone call that much more meaningful - but will that be true for millenials and younger generations? And what s the real value of attention these days, even among individuals? Microsoft has acquired MusiWave for $50 million from OpenWave (who originally acquired MusiWave for $121 million. Ouch ). Will Microsoft once again be in competition with its partners - the handset manufacturers and carriers that use its Windows Mobile OS - a la the Zune? Ken and Steve think its a requisite placeholder in the market for Microsoft until the ZunePhone arrives. Last.fm has luanched an Open Social application running on the Ning platform. Ning has been a leader in Open Social adoption. Paul McCartney has indicated that music from The Beatles will be sold digitally some time in 2008 . Ken and John think it will be an iTunes exclusive, wrapped in FairPlay DRM - even if Apple loses money on the deal. Steve doesn t agree. We predicted it: Rupert Murdoch plans to make the Wall Street Journal Online available for FREE. Ken thinks it will have ot be accompanied by a redesign if they want to take advantage of the potential ad revenue. Steve thinks they ll make it free and open to anyone. John thinks he s crazy. An ODM battle royale ensues. If The New York Times recent experience is any indicator, the WSJ may have nothing to fear in going free. Maybe. Warren Buffet s Berkshire Hathaway is more than doubling its stake in Dow Jones. Coincidence? Writers from The Daily Show have a hilarious take on the current Television Writers Strike. If there s no money in digital media, then why did Viacom sue YouTube for $1 Billion?!? Our music is Democracy from Alexander Blu.
