Life-changing experience: eat a WHOLE crab

 From : Torley Lives
While on vacation at the hotel resort by the ocean (see my earlier post), I ordered a whole Dungeness crab. It was extremely well-prepared, with herb d have to agree. Tougher than a well-done steak for sure, and one risks lacerating their fingers along the spiky edges. But definitely worth it for the experience, not just the rich taste of the meat but the feeling of dominance and conquer-ship. Too testosterone-laden? Well, the crab could be metaphorical. It could represent a challenge, or even a set of adversities that needs to be broken down into smaller pieces to be sized up and consumed. And so it happened, one limb after another, and then the main body. I lifted the top of the crab like a pot lid, and proceeded to break it in half with my bare hands. This is where the majority of the accessible meat lay, and I essentially used the leg-holes as twisted sorts of finger puppets, poking my digits and pushing out more delicious crab meat. The meat really stuck to the more bony parts, and so, I had to do several passes — again, I emphasize that a tool like the crab-cracker would not do, for it wasn t articulate enough to finely lift the meat off and scoop it into my mouth. Nor was it well-tuned to subdivide the centerpiece of the crab, breaking one chamber after another to uncover more meat and consume CONSUME it. (A metal poking stick would ve come in handy, as a fork is just too large to push meat through the joints.) At last, after much struggle, the whole crab had been wholly demolished, a messy plate of broken shells and my oily fingers to show for it. My wife commented on how intense I looked during the entire act, and I could only agree as we ordered dessert (NY-style cheesecake something) shortly thereafter. If you re a vegetarian, pardon I don t know a suitable substitute offhand. But if you crave crab, or have never had it before, should you find yourself in a nicely-groomed dining establishment which will serve up such a delicacy, I doth recommend it. Thanx to Ravie for the pics!

 From : Torley Lives
It s time to debunk the mindjunk and chop the slop about me! Torley paints a happy spin/fluff on everything What kind of crap is this? This criticism is functionally useless. And you now have a choice of how you want to hear me: Normal Torley Download audio file (crap.mp3) Not-Normal Torley Download audio file (crap2.mp3) To put it more diplomatically: read back through my blog posts (both personal ll see 1,000s of times when I not only acknowledged problems (from little UI bugs to critical crashes/content loss), but actioned them onwards. After you ve read all that, or even an ample portion and made the connections, then you have a solid base to work from. But people who go, Torley s just in lala rose-tinted neon land! would benefit from doing research. This isn t a SL problem. It s a human problem which speaks more about the person saying it than me. (E.g., someone has a problem with being happy, or is intensely suspicious of exuberant enthusiasm and wrongly perceives it as being fake .) And it s often paired with passive-aggressive behavior, because I hardly ever get those questions sent to me personally; they tend to be scattered comments on blogs and whatnot, where I m unlikely to see them. Simple: if you have a genuine concern I can help with and want to collaborate on advancing it, contact me directly. Ask questions, don t make unfounded assumptions, and it s likely we ll do great things together. Furthermore, when stuff bothers me, I bring it up. How about this old post from 2005? No, it isn t hard to find my complaints. What you won t find is irresponsible venting and Idiocracy-like behavior from me, and that, you ll agree, is a fine thang. The world has enough problems and we don t need more. Yet I understand if my overwhelming positivity blinds that: humans only have so much sensory bandwidth to go around, and we all have filters (excellent article by Dustin Wax, read it). I may make a post on why the human race are horrible communicators, from the perspective of hypothetical aliens. But we do the best we can. Yes, being me, I m bound to express things uniquely. Torley is crazy Crazy about Second Life? Yes! There was a time when I was very depressed. This was 2003, when my Dad died, and due to other self-esteem and personal struggles at the time. No kidding. Unthinkable now, but that was my day-to-day existence. On top of that, I also was afflicted with hyperacusis, and ended my career as an electronic music producer. As the story goes (as told in past blog posts), I read transhumanist and cyberpunk literature. Got interested in the future. Found out about Second Life. Met Lindens inworld, too wow, they re nice! From late 2004 onwards — discovered myself and re-discovered hope in SL, made many friends. Got a job at Linden Lab, found love (we re living together in first life now). Continue to get joy from helping my fellow Resis. Very much living the dream but more adversity to conquer and dreams to come. So, with that backstory, it makes sense why I m so happy and emotionally secure now. Both on and off the job, I m here to inspire and give hope! If a guy like me can do it, you can live your dreams too. Torley shares his frailties because he wants sympathy No! I have enough sympathy for myself, thankyouverymuch. I share my hardships m coming from, and how much I ve achieved despite them. This isn t just about me: it s about empowering others, so I don t take it personally as the parlance goes. If a high-functioning autistic (Asperger Syndrome) like me can become a beloved social pillar despite the handicaps I face compared to most, then others in situations who can relate will also be empowered. It also speaks to what an awesome company Linden Lab is: we hire diversely, not as token, but because there s excellence across genders, cultures, and neurodiversities! I am living proof of what I believe in. Second Life is a transformative tool and we ve had key communities like Dreams and Wheelies who ve supported each other by sharing experiences. You always put yourself at risk because someone will mock you for being different , but just remember: they re wrong and you re right for being strong. It s true as a business professional, it s not appropriate to encumber you with details of my private life, but when they re important to comprehending my motives affecting you, not unlike how game god Shigeru Miyamoto turned his hobbies into smash-hit games or how Steve Jobs health as it relates to Apple s succession is of public interest, then I ll share as-requested. Here was started because of [silly speculation] In Bizarro-World, maybe! Read the real story of Here, here. Torley runs the official blog and the forums Not anymore. I was one of the first Lindens to champion using the blog and teaching other Lindens how to blog, and I was forum admin for awhile after Jeska passed the torch. Currently, communications tools like this are overseen by Marketing/PR, with our Communications Manager Katt Linden happy to hear about your ideas. Let her know! My current role is Resident Enlightenment Manager: I spread knowledge about Second Life which increases understanding, particularly as it pertains to enjoying the inworld experience. My emphasis is on practical, everyday usefun (useful + fun). As such, my communications are focused on this, not on policy changes and other subjects. Torley is not a real person but a manufactured character, like Stephen Colbert, Perez Hilton, or There.com s Aral It s certainly true by virtue of having an avatar, some traits are exaggerated while others aren t mentioned. I don t express opinions that aren t my own. I really do love life, wife, and watermelons. And I am a human being behind the screen. Thump! There s a lot of wild speculation and stories about you That s not a myth. No colorful character, obscure or famous, has ever been free of this. People find me intriguing, and rightly so. (See Seth Godin s Purple Cow for the simple principles.) Remember, the watermelon visual catchphrases that help me transmit ideas. I wouldn t be so effective otherwise, and what s more important to me is hearing how my personality has encouraged you to express yourself, whether it s creating clothes t think possible before. I don t comment on speculation unless it s substantiated, and especially, would broadly benefit the company (Linden Lab) and customers (Residents) I m responsible to. And being an idoru/folk hero/mythical legend/Internet celebrity (lulz), that s something I ll have to live, and have fun with. As Morgana Skytower wrote: Torley Linden is awesome. I don t just mean he s a great guy, or that he s nice to old people and small animals, and regularly gives candy to small children. Maybe he does, I don t know. I ve never met him. He s so awesome I bet he eats rainbows for rbeakfast and drinks lightning. He s just that WOW. What do I mean? I mean Torley Linden is Cool amplified by the square root of badass times pi. Excuse me, I m going to take a break, have a bite out of the ol Roy G. Biv, and wash it down with some thunder smoothies. I m also going on vacation — but I ll return, rocking and rolling on!

 From : Torley Lives
Hey, what’s that sound? The answer here is a little-known fact that needs to be spread more: you can customize the collision sound an object makes. That’s right, you can make a falling anvil sound like its cartoon counterpart, a glass can emit a startling “crash!”, or you can do something completely different to confound and astound bystanders. You can even silence an object (like thunky stairs). Even if you’ve never scripted before, you can do this with a simple script that requires 1 line of change. I show you how to do this, how to search for sounds on the web, and more! DOWNLOAD HIGH-QUALITY VERSION 00:48 - Building materials have different collision sounds 02:40 - How a script changes collision sound 03:48 - Search for sounds on the web 05:50 - Upload and insert the sound 06:16 - Create the custom collision sound script 08:15 - Silent collisions for stairs (and other stuff) Come to Here island afterwards to see the collision sounds I’ve got setup, including the falling peas. Add to your aural experience and enjoy the SLience! ;D If you re wondering why this is on my personal blog instead of the official Second Life Blog and why you haven t seen the KB Article of the Week lately either, it s because Linden Lab is undergoing changes in communication policy and preparing for future improvements. As much as that doesn t seem to make sense, I can t go into details now, and I would ve let you know earlier were it not for events beyond my control. Please pardon me, I promise to share more if/when I can do so. In the meantime, if you have ideas for how I can better help you by making video tutorials broadly visible in places I ve missed, let me know! -Torley Linden Resident Enlightenment Manager

 From : Torley Lives
Oh irony, why must you be so ironic? Thanks to those who reminded me to go outdoors on previous Saturdays. The funny thing is, the cellphone reception in my house sucks, so I must do exactly that to use the Second Life-Vollee mobile viewer. The further into the field, the better. I previously wrote about my initial experiences, and I wanted to share some crisp shots which I took thanks to Ilium Screen Capture. I also like MyMobile for being able to view and control what’s happening on my AT&T HTC-8925 Tilt. Alas, like I said, I can’t effectively log on from indoors… so, gotta go to nature to get more connected with technology. Handling SL this way is reminiscent of playing games on a handheld device like a Game Gear. I know it’s not a big stretch from the smartphones of today, but still — feels retro. I noticed a couple bugs: (1) borked UI in the Friends list as you can see from pic #19 above, and (2) my inability to teleport via the normal way (it oddly does the same thing as “Show Destination”, altho I remember it working before), and will report them on the Vollee forums. Here’s what it looks like in front of my house:

 From : Torley Lives
If you like excellent dancefloor fillers — COMPARE! Esp. towards the end: Sasha - “Who Killed Sparky?” Nathan Pink - “The Sky is Pink (James Holden Remix)” The first came second. I haven’t heard the two mixed adjacently in a set yet, but here’s an op. Both are magnificent tracks, but I prefer the former because it has a subtle edge of variation and excitement which I’ve hardly heard since Holden’s own “A Break in the Clouds”, prolly one of the bestest electronic musics of ALL-TIME. Another slice of delicious melodic + minimal (melinal? Minodic?) techy tuneage is Dada Life’s “Sweeter Than Fever (David West & Ida Engberg Remix)”: Download audio file (sweeter.mp3) It’s difficult to create something repetitious which grips and suspends you, pulling you into the next 8-bar section. But this does so, masterfully. Shame they’re relative rarities. But then again, those are the true gems, innit?
