"Killing in the Name" (often misnamed, due to the lyrics, as "Killing in the Name Of") was the first single released by Rage Against the Machine from their self-titled album, and is arguably the band's signature song. On 31 August 1999, it was reissued together with one previously unreleased track, "Darkness of Greed" the track "Clear the Lane" originally released on a white only pressing at the time of first release on the b-side to 'killing in the name'.Zack de la Rocha sometimes changes the lyrics in the second verse from "Some of those that work forces are the same that burn crosses" to "Some of those that burn crosses are the same that hold office" when playing live. It is also sometimes changed to "Some of those that work forces are the same that burn churches". "Killing in the Name" was placed at number 89 on "100 Greatest Guitar Solos", a poll made by Guitar World. Q magazine placed "Killing in the Name" at number 24 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks and at number 99 in its list of the 100 greatest songs ever.The song earned its notoriety in the United Kingdom when its BBC Radio 1 DJ, Bruno Brookes, played the uncensored version of the song on his Top 40 countdown, leading to 138 complaints. This moment of infamy has since been consistently referenced by numerous British rock media.The band Audioslave, which incorporated all but one member of Rage Against the Machine, played the song at multiple shows."Killing in the Name" is featured on fictional alternative rock station Radio X, in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and is used as a bumper song on The Jim Rome Show.A note-for-note cover version of "Killing in the Name" is a playable song in the Guitar Hero II video game for PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360, as a part of the main song list. It is found in the fifth song tier, Return of the Shred, in the PS2 version and in the sixth tier, Relentless Riffs, in the Xbox 360 version. However the song's lyrics are altered to remove the expletives, replacing the sentence repeated over 15 times "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!" with "You're under control, I won't do what you tell me!, and the word "Motherfucker!" near the end is replaced with "Under control!".La Maison Tellier made an acoustic cover of "Killing in the Name" that possessed a distinctive folk sound. In July 2007 a remix of this song by SebastiAn (miscredited as a Mr. Oizo remix) was Zane Lowe's "Hottest Record in the World" on his show on BBC Radio 1. Comedian Bill Hicks played the song at the end of his shows toward the end of his life.The song was featured in the movie Step Up 2 during the final dance scene. The Apples, a funk band from Tel Aviv, Israel released a cover on a 7" vinyl on Freestyle Records.In 2004, radio and television commentator Glenn Beck used instrumental sections of the song as an open for his radio show. It happened again Tuesday, as Travis Childers beat Greg Davis in a special election to replace Republican Roger Wicker, who served in the House since 1994 and was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill the seat vacated by Trent Lott. Childers' win will give him the chance over the next several months left in the seat's two-year term to build a fundraising and publicity advantage as he heads into November's general election. He will again face Davis, as well as two other opponents. Childers' win gave Democrats a 236-199 edge over Republicans in Congress. Earlier this year, Democrats captured the Illinois district long represented by former Republican Speaker Dennis Hastert, who resigned from Congress. This month, Democrats claimed a seat in Louisiana that Republican Rep. Richard Baker vacated and that the GOP had held since 1974. Childers is a socially conservative county official, while Davis is mayor of a fast-growing city across the state line from Memphis, Tenn. Vice President Dick Cheney campaigned for Davis the day before the special election, and Davis ran ads trying to tie Childers to Barack Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and the national Democratic Party's policies. Childers stressed his independence, emphasizing his support of gun rights and opposition to abortion. He said his values match those of most voters in the deeply conservative district. Tom Cole, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, said the Mississippi race showed that "Republicans must be prepared to campaign against Democrat challengers who are running as conservatives, even as they try to join a liberal Democrat majority." Cole said voters are "pessimistic about the direction of the country and the Republican Party in general" and the GOP must offer "positive change." Marty Wiseman, a political scientist at Mississippi State University, said if Democrats can carry districts that traditionally have been safe bets for the GOP, "Republican strategists have to be terrified." "If you think about the House and the Senate ... and the number of Republican Senate seats that are exposed, this could turn into something bigger than the presidential race this fall," Wiseman said. Elsewhere, in right-leaning Nebraska, Republican Mike Johanns, the former U.S. agriculture secretary and Nebraska governor, easily won the Republican primary Tuesday in a race to replace retiring Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel. On the Democrat side, Scott Kleeb beat three other Democrats. And in West Virginia, a conflict-of-interest scandal derailed the state's top judge from serving another term. With 97 percent of precincts reporting, Chief Justice Elliott "Spike" Maynard, once considered a shoo-in for re-election, was third in a field of four candidates. The two top vote-getters will face the lone Republican in the race for two high court spots in November. Maynard lost his advantage when photos surfaced in January of him vacationing with the chief executive of a massive coal producer. He faced a former justice, a Huntington lawyer and a West Virginia University law professor. Maynard raised the most money, and his allies included the state's chamber of commerce and medical association. But the photos taken during a 2006 Monaco vacation, when he met up with Massey Energy Co.'s chief executive, quickly became campaign fodder. Maynard blamed the furor on political foes, but withdrew from several Massey-related cases. He had said he would do the same if re-elected. West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller, who hasn't lost a statewide race since 1972, easily beat two challengers as he seeks a fifth six-year term. He'll face Republican Jay Wolfe in November's general election. Gov. Joe Manchin easily fended off a primary challenge and will take on Republican Russ Weeks, a former state senator, in November. Bull Durham is a 1988 American movie about love and baseball. It is based upon the minor league experiences of writer/director Ron Shelton and depicts the players and fans of the Durham Bulls, a minor league baseball team in Durham, North Carolina. Kevin Costner stars as "Crash" Davis, a veteran catcher brought in to teach rookie pitcher Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh (Tim Robbins) about the game in preparation for reaching the Major Leagues while baseball groupie Annie Savoy (Susan Sarandon) romances "Nuke" but finds herself increasingly attracted to "Crash." Also featured are Robert Wuhl and Max Patkin, the "Clown Prince of Baseball". Baseball movies were not considered a viable commercial prospect at the time and every studio passed except for Orion Pictures who gave Shelton a USD $9 million budget with many cast members accepting lower than usual salaries because of the material, an eight-week shooting schedule, and creative freedom. He cast Kevin Costner because of the actor's natural athletic ability. During filming, Costner was able to hit two home runs while the cameras were rolling. Bull Durham was a commercial success, grossing over $50 million in North America, well above its estimated budget, and a critical success as well. Sports Illustrated ranked it the #1 Greatest Sports Movie of all time. In addition, the film is ranked number 55 on Bravo's "100 Funniest Movies." It is also ranked #97 on the American Film Institute's "100 Years...100 Laughs" list, and #1 on Rotten Tomatoes' list of the 53 best reviewed sports movies of all time.
