Newsradio(In Outer Space) Joe actually drinks the mouthwash that Beth hands him. Instead of the regular opening credits with images of New York, we see images of space exploration. The music is also remixed. The made up word "Guzizah" , which Catherine fools Bill into thinking is a greeting used on the street in the episode Office Feud, is actually a means of saying hello in the future. At least according to this episode. This episode is filled with references to science fiction movies and TV shows. Among the allusion sources are 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien, Aliens, Star Trek (both the original series and The Next Generation), Battlestar Galactica, Rollerball, Star Wars, Soylent Green and The Twilight Zone. After suffering a major heart attack, the comatose Jimmy convalesces in WNYX's break room. To help him recover the entire staff spends time talking to Jimmy leading to moments of self reflection and expressions of affection for the unconscious boss. But after reflecting on her own life, Lisa suddenly realizes she wants to have a baby. With Dave. Now. Vicki Lewis does not appear in this episode because she was shooting her scenes in the movie Godzilla (1998). During the End Credits there are a few alternate versions of Jimmy's video including one of him turning and saying "Help me Obi-Wan you're my only hope" just like Princess Leia in Star Wars IV: A New Hope. When Jimmy starts removing furniture and equipment from WNYX due to budget shortfalls, Dave sets out to investigate where the missing money went and the trail leads to Bill. Meanwhile Matthew introduces everyone to his identical twin brother who happens to look nothing like him. Instead of the usual end credits we have Beth doing some window gags for Dave's amusement. Unfortunately Maura Tierney does not appear in this episode, she was busy filming "Liar Liar" with Jim Carrey. In this episode, there is speculation that Matthew is adopted. Andy Dick is adopted in real life. Jimmy: Follow the money. As Dave tries to figure out the budget overrun, Jimmy repeats the advice Deep Throat gave Woodward and Bernstein during their Watergate investigations. This is part of the series' long running gag that Jimmy James was actually Deep Throat. Jimmy: Morning, Sam. Bill: Morning, Ralph. Jimmy: I love that joke. Jimmy and Bill are referencing the cartoons of Warner Brothers animation great Chuck Jones, more specifically his series featuring Ralph the sheepdog and Sam the wolf (who bore an uncanny resemblance to Wile E. Coyote). The running gag was that the ongoing conflict between these two antagonists was actually a nine to five job complete with time clock punch-ins and coffee breaks. Arriving at their meadow workplace together, they would exchange this mundane, dead pan greeting. Jimmy: You're a bigger man than I, Gunga Din. Jimmy paraphrases the most famous line from Rudyard Kipling's famous poem Gunga Din (1892). The original line is "You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din". The story poem relates the heroic nobility of a simple native water bearer implying that worth and dignity cannot be judged by race or class. In 1939 it was made into a rousing adventure movie starring Cary Grant and Sam Jaffee in the title role. When Beth comes into some money she turns to Jimmy for investing advice, advice that Bill desperately wants to hear. Meanwhile after returning from vacation Matthew's new obsession for all things Japanese drives everyone crazy, while Lisa is shocked to hear that the staff thinks she can use her sexual relationship with Dave to get a new chair. Matthew says that he gave Dave a katana, which is a Japanese long sword, but if you look at the sword closely it is actually a wakizashi, the short sword which is often paired with a katana. Lisa: Excuse me Dr. Dolittle, could you translate for those of us who don't speak office chair? Dr. Dolittle is a fictional character well known for his ability to speak to and translate for animals. Created by Hugh Lofting, he appeared in a massive series of books describing his adventures around the world. The character and his world were adapted into a lavish movie musical starring Rex Harrison in 1967, while Eddie Murphy also played Doctor Dolittle in two movies although these retain little of the original character save for his name and his unique talent. Dave: If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine, Vader. While playing with the sword Matthew gave him, Dave channels the spirit of Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars. Maura in 'Finding Amanda' #1
from YouTube :: Tag // sitcom July 14, 2008
Matthew Broderick stars as the Tolan stand-in, Taylor, a Hollywood screenwriter currently working on a lame sitcom that everyone, including himself, hates. Taylor has struggled with alcohol and drugs in the past, but now his drug of choice is gambling; he steals away to the racetrack to place bets while assuring his devoted wife (Maura Tierney) over the phone that he's still at the office. Taylor's ruse is found out about the same time his sister-in-law admits that her daughter Amanda (Brittany Snow) has run off to Las Vegas to pursue a career as a stripper, a.k.a. hooker. Convinced, for some reason, that bringing Amanda home is the key to winning his wife's affection again, Taylor steals off to Sin City, where he's a familiar face thanks to his many years of placing bets on the ponies from the casino floor. Beth wins a contest and gets to call the vending company to come pick up the sandwich machine in the office. She replaces it with an arcade game that Dave has a history with. Meanwhile Bill freaks out over the loss of his favorite sandwiches and Lisa talks Dave into retaking the SAT's. Instead of the regular end credits, we find Dave playing Stargate Defender at an arcade. Dave: I wish I was big. Dave standing in front of the fortune telling machine and wishing he was big reproduces a pivotal scene from the movie Big (1988). Jimmy: What's the buzz? Tell me what's a-happening. Jimmy enters the room quoting a line from the musical Jesus Christ Superstar by Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice. Dave: Hey, I didn't just sign for a stolen jeep did I, Radar?" Although Beth thinks Dave is referring to Star Trek, he is actually referencing M*A*S*H. In the TV series, company clerk Radar O'Reilly was always an accomplice to the highjinks orchestrated by Hawkeye and the gang, and would often help his pals by slipping in official forms and clearances for approval by the clueless Henry Blake. Interestingly, in the 1970 movie the first thing we see Hawkeye do is steal a jeep. A crime eventually covered up by Radar. Gary Burghoff, who played Radar, is the only cast member to appear in both the movie and TV series. After renting an expensive summer house for a group vacation, Matthew runs into nothing but trouble while trying to collect deposits from the staff for its use. Meanwhile Dave, Bill, and Jimmy spend the day trying to create the perfect baseball promo spot. The editing story involving Bill's promo was inspired by the real life problems and boredom experienced by the show editors. Joe: Mindless drones don't deserve to be using technology. Lisa: You are the Unabomber, aren't you? The Unabomber sent a rambling anti-technology manifesto to several major newspapers and told them he wouldn't commit any more bombings if they published it. They did publish it, which led to David Kaczynski recognizing the style of writing as that of his brother Ted, a former mathematics professor who lived in isolation in Montana. Ted Kaczynski was convicted for the bombings.
