BARACK OBAMA WILL ANNOUNCE VP THROUGH TEXT & EMAIL

BARACK OBAMA WILL ANNOUNCE VP THROUGH TEXT & EMAIL

from MediaBytes with Shelly Palmer on August 15, 2008
Duration: 168
The entire G-Mail service crashed in the middle of the day for a few hours yesterday, making it impossible for users of Google's popular email service to log in to their accounts, send or receive messages, or chat through G-Talk. The Gmail problem became a hot topic of discussion on Twitter, as users of the micro blogging site wrote about 100 messages a minute about the service crash. Google quickly fixed the problem and released a statement saying they would run a full system review. Turning to Hollywood, the five major studios are fighting over day and date video on Demand. Time Warner and Sony, who both have strong distribution channels in place want to make movies available on demand the same day they are released on DVD. Viacom, Disney, and News Corp are not convinced, fearing that releasing VOD movies day and date will cut into DVD sales, which can make 40 percent or more of a movie's revenue. OMG, you won't believe who Barack picked as VP. Democratic Presidential Nominee Barack Obama said that he will announce his running mate through email and text message on or just before August 25th. Obama's campaign has used the Internet more effectively than any other politician in history, and his email and text plan is just the latest example of how modern his tactics have been. In this modern age, even war has gone digital. While Russian troops continue to roll across the borders of Georgia, the smaller country is also accusing Russia of using cyber warfare. Georgia claims that Russia has disabled many of their important sites, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, using a technique called a Distributed Denial of Service Attack. The attacks are designed to make websites unreachable, and are usually carried out by using hundreds or even thousands of personal computers, which makes tracking who is behind the attack nearly impossible. And looking towards Wall Street, media player IAC said that they will spin off their five companies on August 21st. The SEC said August 12th will be the first day that when issued trading will begin for the five spun off companies, including HSN, Interval Leisure Group, Ticketmaster, Tree.Com, and IAC, while regular trading will begin on August 21st.

HULU will officially launch on Wednesday, offering full-length episodes of 250 television series, 100 feature-length films and some of the top online video content. The News Corp - NBC U venture has gone all-out, adding new programming from Lionsgate, Warner Bros. TV Group, the NBA, the NHL, the Onion News Network and more. Of course, this is all added to its huge beta selection of content from Fox, NBC and more. Hulu has a lot of high-quality programming. The site will also blaze new trails in advertising by offering two unique ad formats. One will allow viewers to choose between multiple ads. The other will offer viewers a commercial-free show if they agree to watch a 2 and a half minute movie trailer. Since entering beta the site has already shown signs of being a success, growing to 5 million monthly viewers and having its content embedded in over 5,000 sites. Hulu is a major experiment and the long-awaited network reaction to YouTube. If you haven t tried Hulu during the beta period, log on to Hulu.com this Wednesday to give it a shot.LIONSGATE will begin including iPod-ready digital copies of films released on DVD and Blu-ray, starting with the May 27 release of Rambo. Fox initially kicked off the digital-copy concept last November with the release of Live Free or Die Hard. The number of digital copies actually activated so far has been small but the studios see the option as protection against piracy and a way to maintain DVD sales as viewers increasingly demand portable media.DISNEY expects to generate $1 billion in revenue from online content this fiscal year according to CEO Bob Iger. That would be about 3% of company revenue, based on 2007 numbers. Disney has been very aggressive at embracing the shift to online content, selling shows and movies on iTunes, streaming TV episodes on ABC.com and even purchasing social-networking site Club Penguin. The forward-thinking approach has clearly paid off and puts Disney in a good position as more viewers shift to new media.AFTRA has reached a tentative deal with producers covering daytime serials, talk shows and game shows. The deal increases wages, provides residuals for Internet downloads and increases health care contributions. The deal must now be ratified by members. Prime-time dramas and sitcoms are covered under a separate contract that expires in June.NEWS CORP said it will not compete with Microsoft for Yahoo.NIELSEN will introduce a new series of reports that analyzes the connection between blog coverage and box office performance.SPRINT will update is Mogul phone to run on the faster EV-DO Rev. THE DISNEY-ABC TELEVISION GROUP has officially announced Stage 9, a new digital media studio. The studio s first project is Squeegees, an online comedy show about a group of bumbling window washers. The 5-minute episodes will be released on Mondays and Fridays on both YouTube and ABC.com. However, this new media studio made a decidedly old media move by disabling the embedding of episodes. Disney seems bent on losing the benefit of word-of-mouth, as users cannot add the shows to blogs or social-networking profiles. It doesn t take long to copy an episode, upload it to YouTube on a regular account, and embed it anywhere on the web without the Toyota banners and pre-rolls that currently support the show. Disney should avoid this fate and simply allow embedding. NBC canceled the show Quarterlife after its first episode debuted to incredibly low ratings. Bravo will reportedly run the full 13-episode Internet series instead. Creator Marshall Herskovitz tempered his earlier caustic comments about the experiment by releasing a statement saying he was deeply grateful for NBC s effort. SAG announced that it will not start formal negotiations with the AMPTP until April at the earliest. Until then, the Guild will hold internal meetings to prepare its proposal. The Guild also needs to resolve the details of joint bargaining with AFTRA. CABLEVISION and TICKETMASTER are reportedly in talks to acquire 49% of AEG Live, the country s second largest concert promoter. The deal would connect major concert venues across the country (including Madison Square Garden), Fuse TV and more with Ticketmaster s market dominance and AEG s promotional engine. Live Nation, another concert promoter, recently broke off a partnership with Ticketmaster to start its own ticketing business. PLUS: YouTube will add live video sometime in 2008, according to co-founder Steve Chen. Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has a new online show in the works that will be distributed by Google. And earlier this week Nielsen canceled its ambitious Project Apollo, which tested Arbitron s people meters for use in tracking a combination of media consumption and purchasing habits.
