travelwishtv.com Often times, rental car companies will offer free or small fee upgrades to larger vehicles. They do this mainly because compacts tend to be in high demand. This sort of upgrade may seem like a great deal and is often hard to turn down. But if you have no real need for the extra space, it's cheaper to decline. Larger vehicles burn more gas, and if not used to driving a SUV s or other larger vehicle it can be a little difficult to maneuver and harder to park. If a larger vehicle will genuinely enhance your rental experience, then take the upgrade. This has been Lisel Hlista for travelwishtv.com with yet another travel tip. Thanks for watching.

May 21, 2008

travelwishtv.com Lisel Hlista here for TravelWishtv.com with your car rental travel tip. Beware of hidden fees and taxes. Make sure to return your rental car with the same amount of gas that was in it when you left. The rental company keeps track of this and if you think gas is expensive now wait until you see what the rental company will charge your credit card per gallon. Also stay away from renting at an airport if you can. Often times an additional airport fee in excess of $10 per day can be tacked unto your bill. Texas airports were the chief offenders, but airports in states like Arizona, Ohio, Maryland, Missouri and New Mexico also cost renters more in taxes and fees. Another hidden fee is the excess taxes in addition to the sales tax such as the licensing fees, arena fees, mileage fees, or other confusing fees. Renter beware if you see any rates below $20 per day. These rates are too good to be true and are often loaded with hidden taxes. This has been Lisel Hlista for travelwishtv.com with yet another travel tip. Thanks for watching.

Nissans Little RascalNissans Little Rascal
from Revver - hot Videos
March 13, 2008

Author: autoline Added: Thu, 13 Mar 2008 11:16:22 -0800 Duration: 201With unrest plaguing oil-producing regions from Venezuela to the Middle East, and global oil demand growing hand over fist, the price of a gallon of gasoline can only go up. Accordingly, consumers in need of cargo and seating capacity are crossing over to more efficient car-based utilities, which explains why Ford Explorer sales are in freefall. No doubt eager to enter this hot segment, Nissan has taken its sweet time building a compact crossover of its own. Christened Rogue, Nissans entry is squarely aimed at the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV-4, arguably the segments top dogs. To separate the Rogue from the rest of the pack, Nissan gave it a few unique features, like a CVT and a rear cargo organizer. While its hard to say if the Rogue is best in class, it is as good as any compact utility. Anyone shopping for a vehicle in this segment should definitely put Rogue on his or her shortlist.

Scallops with Artichokes, Tomatoes, and White Beans in ParchmentScallops with Artichokes, Tomatoes, and White Beans in Parchment
from Pink of Perfection
March 11, 2007

With its tidy little packages steaming with juices and unadulterated flavors, cooking en papillote has always transfixed me. At the same time, I found myself flummoxed. Without ripping the package open, how could I be sure whatever I was cooking was in fact done? The answer, my friends, like so many things, lies in having a little faith. When I am first venturing out into the unknown territory of a new technique, my stack of cookbooks morphs from bedtime reading to indispensable guide. Looking up a single method in various cookbooks can leave a first-time parchmenter (or braiser or roaster or sauteer) feeling pretty secure about oven heat and timing issues. From there, experimentation is on the loose and no map is required. A chicken breast would take a bit longer, a fillet of fish a bit shorter, perhaps, but the sky is the limit in terms of potential veggie roommates. Scallops have such a creamy, buttery flavor, and because I don't splurge on them as much as I could, they feel like a real treat. Coupled with the simplest supporting cast -- quartered artichoke hearts, scallions, grape tomatoes, and white beans -- this meal feels special but can be pulled off in no time flat, making it perfect for an elegant weeknight or speedy dinner party fare. And those wrapped up packages will remind your guests what a gift it is to dine at chez toi. Scallops with Artichokes, Tomatoes, and White Beans in Parchment 1 pound sea scallops 1 can quartered artichoke hearts, drained 1/2 pint grape tomatoes, halved 2 scallions, pale green and white parts chopped 1 can white beans, rinsed and drained olive oil parchment paper Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a large bowl, gently toss artichoke hearts, tomatoes, scallions, and white beans with 1 tablespoon olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Rise and pat dry your scallops. If they have a hard tab on them, just cut that off. Cut 8 squares from your parchment paper, about 10-12" long. On four of the parchment squares, mound a bit of the artichoke mixture and top with a few scallops (depending on how large your scallops are they should probably be about 3-4 scallops per person). Place another square of parchment on top and fold the edges up around the package, sealing it as best you can. Place parchment packages on cookie sheets and bake for 15 minutes. Serves 4 Note: In the video, I am only cooking for two and use 1/2 pound of scallops. The leftover artichoke mixture makes a great salad tossed with tender bibb lettuce.

On the Road: ParisOn the Road: Paris
from Pink of Perfection
January 08, 2007

Who wouldn't want to be a French girl? Whether true or not, we all imagine she looks great in skinny jeans and ballet flats, totes baguettes in her bicycle basket, doesn't get fat, and brings a graceful touch to everyday living. Sadly, I am not French. But I did get to spend a week in Paris, and I can tell you that an ordinary American girl can quickly feel sublime and in her element among all that foie gras. First, you will feel beautiful in Paris. Every building, imposing or understated, every little dog, every boutique window, every view from every bridge - all of it is lovely. And soon the atmosphere of gorgeousness will go straight to your head. You may find yourself at the dinner table arching your back like a cat and gazing through lowered lashes. You will raise an eyebrow, smirk, and flirt. You will, and this I promise, forget any silly insecurity that dogs you stateside. Your feet may ache from the walk up Montmartre and you may step in something you wish you hadn't. It won't matter. Listening to an old man with an accordion and letting the cold wind whip through your hair at night, you will be unstoppable gorgeous and irresistibly alive. Second, you will never be so happy to sit down to a meal. Whether in grubby, smoke-filled tourist traps or Michelin-rated temples to gastronomy, the food steals your heart. Some of the best fun is walking through one of the many markets (or even a street that is crowded with food shops) and marveling at all your favorite kinds of cheese, the astounding number of wines for less than 10 euro a bottle, the sumptuous red flesh of a duck breast, or the intricate and precious pastries that shine under a thin glaze. You may well become jealous of the French gastronomic advantage as you nosh on duck rillette and crisp, airy baguette or sip your rich cafe creme in the warm light of a bistro with a horseshoe-shaped bar. You will forgive them this edge. And you will, of course, be in love. It is a statistical fact that everyone falls in love in Paris. You may become charmed again by the quotidian details of daily life or the sudden cold rain that leaves the world slick and black. I hope you may take up a love affair with yourself, remembering you're not so bad at all (in fact, some say you are enchanting!). You may - what luck! - meet someone new to get lost with in the Louvre and kiss next to the Seine. And if you are very, very lucky, you may fall in even deeper with the one who brings you coffee each morning and wishes you sweet dreams every night.

Bust Holiday CraftacularBust Holiday Craftacular
from Pink of Perfection
December 13, 2006

Wouldn't holiday shopping go down a lot easier if you could skip chain stores entirely and browse handmade goods with a cocktail in your hand while bobbing your head to Le Tigre? As if you were looking for another reason to love Bust magazine, they brought us the Holiday Craftacular for the second year in a row. Hosted at the historical Warsaw in Brooklyn (such a great place for a show!), the Craftacular solves the eternal holiday quandary of whether to merrily deck the halls or cross another item off your shopping list. The djs were spinning songs so good it was like listening to a mix tape made by your coolest friend. The atmosphere was jolly and frenetic with more than sixty vendors selling gorgeous calendars, notebooks, cards, knit and sewn clothing and accessories, yoga mat bags, jewelry, and bath products. I don't get starstruck very often (Hilary Swank shopped next to me at Anthropologie a couple of weeks ago and I barely bat an eye), but meeting the Bust team was a sighting like none other. These women were so dynamic, energetic and kind, it made me curious about a day in the Bust offices. They produce a magazine with a unique and invaluable voice. But do they also nurse pony-necks while proofing pages and run craft ideas by each other? Do they drop off homemade baked goods by the water cooler? Do they have a water cooler? And then I met editor-in-chief and co-publisher Debbie Stoller. In addition to being the author of some indispensable books on knitting and crochet, she is a supporter of woman owned and run small businesses (just look at the ads in Bust!). Rather than chilling on a chaise at the helm, she is amazingly tuned in to the happenings of the magazine's demographic. She even took the time to talk to the people from a little blog called Pink of Perfection! Internet marketplaces have done so much to enable crafters to sell their wares, but there's nothing like real time interaction under one roof to bring a group together. Mutual admiration among crafters and shoppers ran as high as the holiday cheer. A huge thanks to Bust for making it happen (an extra special thanks to Dawn!) and for managing to get so many of us into the spirit of the season.

The Wednesday Chef: Bison with Smoky Wild RiceThe Wednesday Chef: Bison with Smoky Wild Rice
from Pink of Perfection
November 16, 2006

On her popular blog the Wednesday Chef, Luisa tests recipes from the New York Times and Los Angeles Times food sections. It's an idea I've loved since the moment I first became a loyal reader of her elegant, playful prose. When I asked Luisa to be a Guest Cook on Pink of Perfection, I had no idea I would become so enamored of her cozy kitchen in Chelsea, her wonderfully warmhearted nature, or that gorgeous face of hers. I also didn't know I would be eating bison. Despite the sun-faded poster for buffalo burgers in the window of the all-night diner I used to frequent in college (it was Minnesota, after all), I had never had bison. These bison strip steaks were exotically glamorous (and huge!) and eating them with pomegranate molasses-spiked wild rice rendered our meal both elegant and rustic. The New York Times' almightly Florence Fabricant (the recipe's author) was on to something here. Like an airy, modern gem of a house plunked down in the mountains of Montana, it was a perfect juxtaposition. So we ran into a few problems while cooking, so what? In this kitchen, two heads were better than one as we successfully troubleshot the recipe's failings together. What to do when your wild rice still isn't cooked after an hour and a half? Oh, just dump some jasmine rice in there and see what comes out in 20 minutes. How to deal with a red wine reduction that just tastes like an unidentified baked good? Add that bacon Florence Fabricant wasn't even going to have us use. On both accounts, pure brilliance. Bloggers and boyfriends sat down to a meal at midnight that none of us were much prepared to like: too much had gone wrong, too much was improvised and our spirits were dashed. We were fools to not believe in the power of Florence Fabricant - or the Wednesday Chef herself - because dinner was absolutely delicious. The bison was a carnivore's dream - rare and meaty with bacon on top - and the smoky rice added a lovely sweetness. The chocolate pudding cake Luisa threw together while we were setting up the lights was a surprise knock out, but certainly the best part of the evening was being welcomed into a kitchen and finding new friends there.

The Hot SeatThe Hot Seat
from Pink of Perfection
September 25, 2006

Women with tools are hot, and Beatrice has an entire workshop filled with 'em. This lady's got pliers, hammers, an ancient sewing machine, a pneumatic staple gun and a whole lot more in the back of her vintage furniture shop, Atlantis, in sleepy-cool Red Hook, Brooklyn. The store is filled to the brim with all sorts of mid-century treasures, and I left the proud owner of juice glasses painted with a buck-in-forest scene. The furniture shop isn't the first endeavor for this born organizer. Not only did she learn how to play bass and start a band the same week, but she founded New York's first all-female moving company and schlepped Roseanne Cash's stuff (I can only assume this is how she got those kick-ass guns). You have before you a New York original passing on time-honored furniture trade secrets. A crochety old man at a former job taught Beatrice how to restore 50s dinette sets (an invaluable lesson since vinyl dries out and is usually cracked once you stumble across a set at a junk shop), and she teaches us here how to do it. The secret weapon? A space heater. Prepare to be wowed by a hot lady and a red hot chair. Materials: 1/2" or less double stick tape 1/2 yard vinyl per chair 1 yard vinyl in a contrasting color for trim dacron or upholstery batting chrome upholstery tacks scissors hammer 000 or 0000 steel wool screwdriver pliers space heater or blow drier welt cord for piping sewing machine In a Nut Shell: 1. Dissasemble and chairs and pull off the old, crummy vinyl 2. Clean chrome with steel wool 3. Cover seat of chair and front of the back rest with dacron 4. Cut vinyl to size and heat 5. While heating, stretch and staple 6. Cut contrast vinyl into 2 inch strip 7. Sew piping 8. Make magic strip (watch video to know what this means!) 9. Tack vinyl strip 10. Staple Piping Voila!

Alison's Best Birthday CakeAlison's Best Birthday Cake
from Pink of Perfection
August 11, 2006

I could not have been happier when my older brother, Duncan, asked Alison to be his bride. She is perfect for him: she makes awesome pico de gallo, looks terrific in shorts, and loves Tecate. Lucky for me, she is also a perfect sister-in-law. She is smart as a whip, totally tough, and always stylish. Perhaps coolest of all, Alison has the Midas touch. Every flower arrangement, Halloween ornament, homemade lamp, and chocolate-covered sugar cookie is graced with a finesse most people can't pull off, let alone think of in the first place. She manages to put some of her creativity into each day, and I have always admired her boundless energy. That said, you will need energy like Alison's to make this cake. A rich tower of eggs, butter, and milk takes time. It's not difficult, per se (that is, not if you have an electric mixer - and am I the only person who doesn't?), it's just time-intensive. In other words, if you make this cake for someone, you are saying loud and clear that you love them so much you'd rather turn on the oven than lay by the pool. And isn't that the message the best birthday cake should send? For my birthday this year, Alison made me this cake, covered with lavender icing and fresh pansies, and transported it via public transportation to my party. I felt honored to have such a cake. It was as good as my 6th birthday when I woke up from a nap at Disneyworld to a carrot cake from my parents, or when my friend Katie carried a surprise homemade chocolate dream to the dinner table when I turned 22. The best presents are the ones that take your breath away - not because of their gorgeousness or extravagance - but when you can sense that someone is handing over so much more than the gift itself. In the next episode, we'll post the complete cake recipe and show you how Alison ices like a pro!

Fire With Fire: Simplest LanternsFire With Fire: Simplest Lanterns
from Pink of Perfection
August 04, 2006

If you've ever taken an early supper during which the restaurant staff changes the lighting scheme over from all-business lunch to starry-eyed dinner, you know that your dining companions instantly become twice as attractive. You don't need a McMansion with dimmer switches in every room for an intimate effect; the basic element of fire will serve you quite well. When my friend Emily and I decided to throw a dress-up party in college, the lighting scheme was the first order of business, and we ran right out to buy hundreds of votives (we also snipped lots of wild roses from the bushes around the fieldhouse). At my sister's wedding, her friends and I spent hours hollowing out lemons to hold votives in star-shaped centerpieces we crafted out of chicken wire. For anyone on a budget, votives are key, but buyer beware: their flame rarely lasts the length of a three course dinner, and once outside, their fire goes out as quickly as Rick Astley's career. We needed lanterns for our outdoor dinner, but I wasn't about to drop $40 a pop at West Elm for them. I turned instead to the charming jelly jar, but you could use empty salsa and peanut butter jars to the same end. On the craft-o-meter, these lanterns are startlingly simple to make, and their effect utterly delightful. The glass refracts the light into soft gold beams that play right off the angles of your face for -- wow -- instant movie star effect. You, my dear, will look as lovely as Marlene Dietrich with gold flecks in her hair.
