Trailer Park: Deadly Tales
from Cinematical September 26, 2008
Halloween's still a month away, but these films all have some afterlife in them. The Spirit The second trailer for the highly anticipated adaptation of Will Eisner's classic graphic novel looks a lot like Robert Rodriguez's Sin City. That's not surprising, since comic book great Frank Miller not only co-directed that flick, he also wrote the book it was based on. The Spirit marks his solo directorial debut, and he's definitely got the film noir thing down. After a rookie cop is brutally murdered, he's resurrected as the title character (Gabriel Macht), a masked crime fighter dedicated to keeping the city streets safe. Of course he has to vanquish a supervillain (Samuel L. Jackson as the Octopus) and a couple of femme fatales, first. It's clearly got a dark vibe, but it doesn't take itself too seriously. There's a bunch of one-liners in the trailer. My favorite: "Somebody get me a tie ... and it sure as hell better be red!" Trailer Park: First You Zig, Then You Zag
from Cinematical August 08, 2008
Filed under: Action, Comedy, Horror, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Trailer Trash, Trailers and Clips Once again we're bouncing around the trailer-verse, finding a preview of interest and letting word association zig us into one trailer before zagging into another. Here we go ... The Spirit The Spirit teaser made the movie look a bit too much like a Sin City sequel, but this full length trailer seems to give a better look at what it's all about. Tons of bizarre imagery to digest here, with a strong emphasis on The Spirit's love interests, which appears to be pretty much every woman in the cast. I've only read a few Spirit comics over the years so I wasn't sure what to expect. Still, Frank Miller is giving this a major dose of visual style which has me looking forward to the December 25 release date. Here's Elisabeth's take on it. And speaking of all things spiritual... Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Up through Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire I felt the film adaptations of J.K. Rowling's novels improved with each installment. I also liked Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, but for the first time I thought too many details from the book were glossed over or left out entirely, making the movie feel more like highlights from the book than a complete adaptation. I'm hoping I don't get that feeling when the Half-Blood Prince hits theaters because I'm liking this trailer. We really get the feel of the series' increasing darkness as we see a flashback of Professor Dumbledore's first meeting with Tom Riddle, the boy who will grow up to become Lord Voldemort. I'm expecting great stuff for Harry's sixth year at Hogwart's. Here's what Erik had to say on the trailer. And speaking of school...Continue reading Trailer Park: First You Zig, Then You Zag Permalink | Email this | Comments

Cinematical's 2008 Comic Con Awards!
from Cinematical July 29, 2008
Filed under: Fandom, Exhibition, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Images, ComicCon I'm sure Scott and Elisabeth will chime in at some point within the next week with their favorite and not-so-favorite moments from this year's San Diego Comic Con, and so I thought I'd get the ball rolling with something a little different. Welcome to our first annual Comic Con awards! Pretty self-explanatory; we hand out awards in several different film-related categories, offer up an explanation for our choice and then attend a swanky, imaginary after party. Here goes ... Most Buzzed-About Footage Tron 2 -- Out of all the footage that screened during Comic Con, it was that damn Tron 2 teaser thrown in during the Escape to Witch Mountain panel that took everyone by surprise. However, after it screened, it was all anyone was talking about -- so much so that it was the first question three different complete strangers asked me whilst talking about The Con: "Did you see the Tron 2 footage? How awesome was that?" (Shhh ... leaked footage) Biggest Surprise Fanboys -- When it takes two years for a film to arrive in theaters, that's usually not a good sign of things to come. When, throughout those two years, the film's director is replaced by some hack, the script is re-written to wipe out a crucial plot element and thousands of fans stage a boycott of The Weinstein Co. (said film's distributor) ... well, that can't be a good thing either. So then it was definitely a big surprise to watch the final cut of Fanboys at Comic Con and walk away with giant smiles on our faces. From my mini-review: "I will say, though, that this is not just a film for Star Wars fans -- it's a film for any geeky dude or dudette who's ever horsed around with their friends, gone on a nutty adventure and inserted random movie quotes into every other line of dialogue." The film should hit theaters on September 19th (hopefully in a wide release). Read Scott's full review.Continue reading Cinematical's 2008 Comic Con Awards! Permalink | Email this | Comments

SDCC: Entertainment Weekly's 'Visionaries' Panel = Pure Gold
from Cinematical July 26, 2008
Filed under: Fandom, Exhibition, ComicCon I had a huge red circle thrown around this event the second it was announced: Someone at Entertainment Weekly thought it would be a good idea to put Kevin Smith, Judd Apatow, Zack Snyder, and Frank Miller on the same panel -- for no other reason than to talk about comic books, movies, and the ways in which comic books are turned into movies. The panel was moderated very well by EW's Marc Bernardin, who asked questions both insightful and silly. Then they got to some internet-submitted queries before opening the floor up to the Comic-Con crowd. I tried to record the event (audio only, of course), but since the panel took place in Hall H (which is a room that could easily house two medium-sized airports), that audio turned out to be a garbled mess of static, frequent laughter, and a few phone conversations with Erik Davis. Good thing I took a few notes!Continue reading SDCC: Entertainment Weekly's 'Visionaries' Panel = Pure Gold Permalink | Email this | Comments

EW's Con Preview: 'Terminator', 'Spirit', 'Friday the 13th' and More!
from Cinematical July 18, 2008
Filed under: Fandom, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, ComicCon "You're lucky I forgot my water wings biotch!" In honor of San Diego Comic Con (which starts next week -- OMG!), Entertainment Weekly has thrown together a pretty neat spread on a bunch of the films, TV shows and even comics. Yes, comics. I know, crazy for a comic convention, but what can you do. Although it's not technically part of their Con preview, up above you can see the first image of Jason from the upcoming Friday the 13th remake. The folks behind that flick will host a panel and debut the first trailer at Con. Below, we've pulled out five of the 26 photos (not including their other First Look photo batch) for you to preview before heading over to EW's site. They also have up a pretty sweet Watchmen piece, which gives another nice look at The Comedian. Featured below: Images from The Spirit, Terminator Salvation, Land of the Lost, Ninja Assassin and Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell. Which film are you most excited about?
