The Monkees were a pop rock quartet assembled in Los Angeles in 1966 for the American television series The Monkees, which aired from 1966 to 1968. The members were Americans Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, and Englishman Davy Jones, who were supervised and popularized by Don Kirshner. At the time of the band's formation, its producers saw The Monkees as a Beatles-like band.[1] At the start, the band members provided vocals, and were given some performing and production opportunities, but they eventually fought for and earned the right to collectively supervise all musical output under the band's name. The group undertook several concert tours, allowing an opportunity to perform as a live band as well as on the TV series. Although the show was canceled in 1968, the band continued releasing records until 1970. In the 1980s, the television show and music experienced a revival, which led to a series of reunion tours, and new records featuring various incarnations of the band's lineup. Conception Aspiring filmmakers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider were inspired by the Beatles' film A Hard Day's Night to develop a television series about a fictional rock 'n' roll group.[2][3] The duo sold the idea to Screen Gems television and in September, 1965, Daily Variety and The Hollywood Reporter ran an ad seeking "Folk he can be seen in the Beatles' home movies, including one scene where he is conversing with Lennon (who called him Monkee Man). Dolenz was also in the studio during a session, which he mentioned while broadcasting for WCBS-FM in New York (incidentally, he interviewed Starr on his program). McCartney can be seen in the 2002 concert film Back in the U.S. singing the "(Theme from) The Monkees" while backstage. Author: taprat Keywords: The Monkees Aired Live: 2009-09-06 12:48:10

Continuing to drop trou, and Moon you some more, lol! Opening up this episode with a song about a comedian, but it also touches on those wackos who think we never really put a Man on the Moon. Oh ye of little faith! Then a contribution from a lady regarding a HALF look at the Moon. I’ll have some more info about the Moon Landing- the surface was very slippery, so LOPING was the preferred method of getting around up there. Putting this series together, I came to realize how many dozens of versions there were, and very many by rock & rollers, of a song written in 1934. I picked three to play- one from a contemporary acapella group called Da Vinci’s Notebook, who used to play frequently at New York’s Bottom Line, until the club closed. Haven’t seen them around any more. The others will be the rocking hit version from 1961 (wonder why there were so many songs about the moon that year?), and lastly one from the early Sun Records label, by a strange looking cat with slick-backed hair and a turned-up collar. He went on to HUGE success, and I am SURE you have heard of him. Unless you were born yesterday, or live in a vegetative state! We will go out with some songs about colored Moons. One from the last album by a guy who had no success while alive, and died in 1974 when he was only 26- but now has developed a huge cult following. The other from an ex-Monkee. Yeah, that’s right, lol! Stick with me, fellow Space Travelers. Our journey is not yet halfway through. Mike
