ROCKOLLECTIONS: SPACE: THE FINAL FRONTIER PT.9

from WLSO.FM on August 19, 2009
Duration: 1707
Well, here we are with the next to last chapter. I am gonna start this one off with a fun TV theme that should have a memory for you. Later in, a look at the Future, featuring a fairly recent Todd Rundgren song re-mixed by my Texas buddy, JR Claiborn. Another Future song is next, by a group that used to wear mime or clown makeup in performance, called the Hello People- a far out and rocking song from them. Oh, and since that was from an old vinyl LP, you will clearly hear the wonderful, refreshing sound of surface noise at the beginning. But hang in there, it will straighten itself out! After that, some leftovers from the previous chapters. I will have planetary space trivia throughout. Coming up next, the conclusion, as we journey to the Stars! Mike

What will the house of the future look like? The American Institute of Architects in Seattle has sponsored a program they're calling FutureShack to try to answer that question. Architects and developers around Washington state have built some innovative residential projects. They range from retooled single family houses to tightly packed apartments and backyard cottages. The architects dealt with affordability, sustainability and neighborhood character. We'll draw up some of our own plans for the future on the next Weekday.

Luddite Journalism

Luddite Journalism

from Clever Witty Quick on December 23, 2008
Duration: 0
How many media outlets can you name that don't have a Web site? Chances are, unless it's a publication you already subscribe to and receive in print (slim and less likely by the day) you'd have no idea a publication without a Web site even exists. David Carr at The New York Times recently took a look at one such newspaper, the TriCityNews in Monmouth County, N.J. OK, it has a Web site, but there's nothing there except this: In fact, The TriCityNews, an alternative weekly with a circulation of 8,500 and three plus employees, has no desire to be on the Web. “Why would I put anything on the Web?” asked Dan Jacobson, the publisher and owner of the newspaper. “I don’t understand how putting content on the Web would do anything but help destroy our paper." One can't blame Mr. Jacobson: the TCN is "double-digital profitable" sticking to the pre-internet newspaper model. (I suppose the image of the paper in a bathroom effectively reminds us that there are areas the Kindle hasn't quite conquered). Indeed, with the weakening state of most online advertising categories and the familiar refrain that ads online offer "pennies for dollars" of traditional print advertising, the hybrid print-digital model hardly seems sustainable. It's hard to imagine that this embrace of what I'm calling "Luddite journalism" is a viable business option for any publication. But in this case, I have to admit it makes sense. Local news is appealing for almost everyone in a given geography, and major newspapers are redirecting resources to cover more high school sports at PTA meetings (often at the expense of foreign or national news) in an effort to keep their existing subscribers engaged and -- dare to dream! -- gain new ones. Even so, those subscribers make the most money for newspapers when they're reading the ink-and-paper version. The Luddite model should work at least until large chunks of the population that are not into getting their news on the interwebs start to lose their economic dominance, and in some areas perhaps much longer than that; after all, broadband penetration is hardly accelerating evenly across the U.S. The opening of the "white space" in the wireless spectrum could change that, but who knows when that will emerge from underneath a massive snarl of red tape and lobbyists. Will the print-only maneuver work indefinitely? I doubt it. The implications for Mr. Carr's New York Times are major, however. Hopefully that institution will find a way to revive its own -- and the rest of the newspaper industry's -- fortunes. Today the reading public got an idea of what the next step in the ongoing revision of newspaper economics might be, as The Baltimore Sun and The Washington Post agreed to begin sharing news and photographs in certain overlapping coverage areas. Have thoughts on the future of newspapers? Do you read a local weekly that's in print only? The comments are open!Click here to play

Central African Exploration & Mining Company Plc (CFM)

from iBall on November 12, 2008

These shares have been pounded more badly than a big rock at the end of a burly miner's pick. Not only have they suffered in the general collapse of the commodities super-cycle but also they have also been squeezed by market forces. And that is before you have even got into yet more tragedy and sadness in Africa. Other than that, we think they are great...

Hello leaders of scientology, we are anonymous. We hope you are having as much fun with this as we are. As you know, we are still here, and with every passing day your failure to account for the fraud and abuse exposed by our campaign becomes more evident to the media, to our government and to your own followers. Reuters , The BBC ,CNN, The London Times, Fox, The Associated Press, Forbes and a legion of local news agencies have chosen to communicate our message about your organization to their viewer-ship. And now the world is listening to us and watching you. The mechanism behind the phenomenal ease with which we have achieved this is simple. We are speaking the truth. Your efforts to handle this condition are as predictable as they are expensive for you. This pleases Anonymous and we encourage you to continue waging your informational war against truth at great expense to you and at no cost to us. We approve of these conditions. Because within them defeat is impossible. Our campaign has been one of constant success, and yours has been one of constant failure. This will continue. Evidence of our victory is everywhere. We are certain that Youtube and google appreciate your handsome patronage now necessary because of the ubiquity of our message. Unfortunately for you the hundreds of thousands of dollars you now spend every month because of Anonymous cannot change your organization's history of crime and abuse of human rights, nor alter your organizations policy encouraging criminal behavior which are now all available to the public. Your lawsuits to censor these documents will continue to fail at great cost to you just as your attempts to paint our peaceful demonstrations as terrorist activities have done nothing but foreground your tendency to abuse the judicial system to suppress free speech. Defections at every level of your organization will continue to increase. By now you have most likely experienced the cognition that every action we take deprives you of at least one of the three following things: capital, clients and credibility. These conditions will continue to exert their pressure upon you and your superiors. The disorder will continue to deepen. We have changed the rules of the game. Growth of the magnitude required to maintain your organization in its present form is no longer possible for you. Your ability to seduce the public has been destroyed. Your survival has long depended on your capacity to suppress the truth of your abuses, and that ability is now gone. We have removed it. Leaders of scientology, the data has spoken. We are at Cause. you are at effect. Expect this to continue, and thank you for playing the game. THIS CHANNEL WILL BE CENSORED. THIS CHANNEL WILL BE CENSORED.
